Yeah. Nearby my house somewhere was "Surveillance_Van-2" for a couple years. I took a screenshot way back when, but I can't find it now.

Wow. Not even being subtle about it.

Why are you up?

No dying allowed. Just living and breathing and sunshine and possibly lots of coffee.

Oh, just the insomnia, books, and keeping myself occupied so that I don't have time to think of all the horrble things fire could do to my body. Normal reasons.  -_-

Nope, no coffee for me. It's part of bein LDS. No coffee, tea, alcohol, tobacco, or drugs.

But I might be able to get a hold of some caffinated soda later . . .

How does that work that you can't have tea? What about simple mint mixed with hot water?

I have some caffeine mixed with sugar in a tiny bag like some kind of drugs... *hey kid, wanna buy some caffeine?*

Well, not the kind that uses actual tea leaves. I know other LDS who love their green tea, which is just made of some healthy herbs.

Ok, so what is wrong with tea leaves? Who said that leaves of this plant are forbidden, while other plants are fine?

I'm really curious about logic behind those rules and I hope that my questions are offensive or anything...

Specifically, Joseph F Smith (remember the "F"!). The Mormon scripture that forbids the drink simply says "no hot drinks", he would later specify that to mean "coffee and tea". Meaning, like HS said, infusion of tea leaves, so mint tea and chamomile, etc. Should be fine. Unless you're a loser that feels you should "avoid the appearance of evil.

Incidentally, green tea is made with young tea leaves, so would also be forbidden.

So why is it forbidden?

What about hot chocolate? :o

Hot chocolate is fine.

To us, it would appear to be for arbitrary reasons. For Mormons, it would be because it was a commandment from God given to Joseph Smith (no "F").

As always religion baffles me... You're lucky that there was no Coca-Cola and other sweet drinks when God set those rules, or it would probably be forbidden too :P

Growing up, there was a sizable group of Mormons who thought CoCa-Cola and other caffeinated sodas were forbidden!

They're not, but that didn't stop a bunch of people acting like they were.

Is there a reason G-D commanded this? Bad for the soul? Leads people to crazy behaviour or something?

And....is the inclusion of F an religious/political thing? Are there two Josephs?

I really dont know much about Mormons.

Joseph F Smith was Joseph Smith's nephew who would lead the Mormon church later on.

As did all leaders after him, including our current one.

With the coffee thing, I view it as being similar to when a parent tells their small child to not eat the mushrooms. You don't know what they do to you, you just have to trust that the parent knows what they're doing.

To us, it would appear to be for arbitrary reasons. For Mormons, it would be because it was a commandment from God given to Joseph Smith (no "F").

In the 1830s and 40s, the US had a surge of temperance societies - groups who taught that the use of alcohol was wrong. These groups also promoted coffee and/or tea as substitutes for alcohol. The early Mormons who first heard the revelation would have seen "no alcohol at all, and don't just go replacing it with one of the popular substitutes. You have to make a clean break of it." So to modern Mormons, removed from the original culture that prompted it, it certainly is arbitrary. But there was a reason for it start with. In this, it is rather similar to a number of the commandments in the Torah - some of which seem arbitrary now but had good reasons in their original cultures.

And that was your Mormon history lesson of the day, folks!

I haven't heard back from the apartment I applied to yet, and I'll need to order the moving truck soon….should I ask them for an update? Or should I just wait?

I think you're fine to give them a call and ask for an update.

So, awesome story.

I discovered my English Teacher is a Sanderfan. As far as I can tell, he isn't on the Shard. Anyway, we're reading Hamlet in class, and yesterday we read the part where almost everyone dies.

As I left the room, I told my teacher, "It's like some kind of homicidal hat trick."

He gave me a weird look. "You stole that."

I gave a big grin. "Yes I did." and left the room.

This was not, by the way, when I discovered he was a Sanderfan. That happened a while ago with a joke about copperminds (I forgot the joke.)
