Picture of Steris (Bands of Mourning)

So, I've been browsing some facebook and I've found something intriguing.

On the official fansite of Dominik Broniek (author of new Polish covers for Mistborn series) we can see a picture of Steris from the cover of Bands of Mourning.

Bands of Mourning Polish cover:

Steris alone:

When I went on to admire other great pictures made by this artist I've found this picture.

Described as: sketch-detail from cover illustration I'm working on

Now, I'm 95% convinced that it shows Steris, judging by similar clothes and haircut. I've asked in the comments if it's her but no reply so far.

What do you think? Is it possible that the author of book cover had some addition information about the book that made him draw her with a sword?

no idea if it would make sense for her to have one, or if it's just some fantasy stereotype.

Anyway, given the book's descriptions, that woman seem way too pretty to be steris. Not that any bookseller would dare to put a plain woman in a cover, for marketing reasons; so this is steris, but in truth she's probably less pretty.

Agreed. The rough sketch is nice. The cover girl is too plastic pretty for Steris. I would like her to snap on the new unknown metal. At the very least I hope she helps to save the day by being her essential Steris self. Maybe her list highlights the big clue or her ability to see how people are likely to act due to the rules of society.

Wow. Could that be Elend's blade? Or TLRs?

I can't view the pictures, but Elend never had a sword. He used dueling canes against other allomancers. The only time Elend had a sword in hand, was when he tore it from the hands of a koloss. But there was not a specific sword he was known to use.

Actualy, he had a sword in WoA. He even used it to kill a Koloss during a duel.

He had a sword he always kept with him at his side for it to become associated with him? Metal? Could you provide the qoute? I know he would pull swords from other koloss and use them against them, but I do not recall him having a personal sword to be seen as the sword of Elend. Not trying to be obtuse, just I do not recall what you are referring to.

My ebooks don't like word searches, so I can't. I remember most of the time he kept a dueling cane, but during his visit to the koloss camp he brought a sword. It is in the "He ate my horse" scene.

It is from WoA, before he became an allomancer.

Fortunately my kindle does, thank you for the reference, found it. He had a dagger on him. He then stabbed Jastes with it. He then after attacking a koloss, took its sword and said it ate his horse in order to get its bag to find out what is in it. So Elend did not have his own sword in that scene.

for reference it is on page 556 in my edition

The idea of Steris wielding a sword, and the rough sketch are both very cool, but I really dislike the way she appears on the finished cover. She looks like a porcelain doll.

I much prefer the Steris on the US cover.

Don't you think the US cover Steris looks like prof Umbridge from Harry potter?

I want this to happen in the book a great deal. Hopefully it doesn't require Steris to Snap and secretly have been a Pewter Misting (not a fan of every character having powers), but if that's what it takes...

AoL era... so no snapping? Or did I miss something?

Snapping still exists, it just...works differently.  Prevailing theory is that Harmony just lowered the threshold, but I think Brandon's RAFO'd any questions about the explanation.

Snapping still exists, the threshold has just been lowered:

Kchan

How does Snapping work after Sazed changed it? If you don't want to reveal it all right now, are there any hints you can give us?

Brandon Sanderson

He couldn't get rid of this entirely. I don't want to spoil things, but Snapping was built into Allomancy primarily because of larger-scale magical issues. This is getting deep into the issue, but it has to do with a person's spiritual makeup and a 'wounded' spirit being easier to fill with something else, kind of like a cut would let something into the bloodstream. Sazed made this threshold on Scadrial much easier to obtain.

Yeh.  I think I read a question once of someone asking exactly where that threshold lies that had the RAFO.

But... (Stormlight Spoilers)

This isn't the only magic system in the Cosmere that has this requirement.  It's pretty strongly implied that the Radiants have to be broken in some way before they can become Radiants.

  • 2 weeks later...

That's awesome. Pretty much like I imagined her. Steris grew to be one of my favourite characters in the Era 2 books, so I hope her role will be even greater in TLM. "Only" a year and a half to go if all goes according to plan. ;_;
