Voidus Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 xkcd is awesome. I really need to go back on there, I used to view it so frequently that I had the entire backlog memorized, so I got bored and haven't been on in a while. So now there should be plenty of new comics. In other news if I was a prime number I would be 2. 1
Zathoth Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 ... I swear, my avatar moved... BEN I know you are in there! I would be 13.
Aonar he/him Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 If I were a prime number, I'd probably be 11. Or three. Either works. (Yes, I know it's a lame joke.) Anyways, in other news: I've just realized that over the last eight months, I've basically taught myself like 90% of the stuff I'll be learning in physics class next semester. Why, you ask? To figure out how to write logically consistent superpowers for the Reckoner's RPG. 5

TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 Didn't get the Neenah job either. What's the point. 1

Now you can turn even the most seemingly innocent superpower into something completely horrible and devastating. This. I have someone who can create mist. She can also draw the water she uses to make that mist out of people's blood....Fortunately, she hasn't discovered that power yet. I'm trying to write a comedy, after all. Didn't get the Neenah job either. What's the point. The point is to keep trying. You will get there. I promise. 1

Elbereth she/her Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 No, you won't. You'll find somewhere, and even if you hate it at the beginning, you'll grow to enjoy it, and all of the little kids will love you because you're the best librarian. Seriously. You'll do great. How could you not? 3
Silverblade5 he/him Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 Didn't get the Neenah job either. What's the point. Twi, someone once told me something about interviews, and now I will tell it to you. Make them like you, make them trust you, and make sure they never forget you. 2
TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 Twi, someone once told me something about interviews, and now I will tell it to you. Make them like you, make them trust you, and make sure they never forget you. Well, there's the problem. I suck at the first two and I do the last in a negative way. I'm pretty sure they're still talking about how sorry they feel for me in the jobs I've already interviewed for. Going to grad school was a mistake. I should've just gotten better at waitressing.
TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 They didn't even say "We have chosen another candidate for this position." No, they said "We have elected to pursue other candidates at this time." In other words, "We don't know who we want for this job, but we know you're not it. Tossing out your resume before we even reach the bottom of the stack." And they're probably right. Taking a chance on me would be dumb.

If you don't think there is one, then there isn't one. An old wise guy once told me that people always move in the direction of their most dominant thoughts, and that what we perceive as being real will become our reality. 2
Zathoth Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 Twi, you are awesome, see, I dont even know you, I still think you are awesome. Storms if it was me I would have given up, stolen an acoustic guitar and gone hoboing. 3
Delightful Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 (edited) To quote one of those cheesy posters on something that happens to be true: You miss 100% of the shots you don't take. You will get a job, but in order to do so you have to dig your heels in and persist and persist till you get there. We believe in you. You should believe in yourself. It'll be awesome. Just hang in there, ok? Edited November 24, 2015 by Delightful 5
Mashadar Mistborn he/him Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 Twi, you will get a good job and you will do great! We believe in you. Don't give up.
TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 But....okay, if all those other jobs are better filled by other people, who's to say there's any job that can't be filled by someone else? Would Bruce be better off with someone else? Would everything I want to write be better written by someone else? Am I deluding myself in thinking I was ever capable of anything? Who's to say I won't storm up living alone, taking care of a pet, starting a career? I don't know. I'm just feeling like this is to keep me from screwing too many things up.

It's not about who's best for any one job. Down that path lies only madness. Just from what I can see of you on this forum, you are an extremely capable woman. You are kind to a point I could never hope to aspire to, which makes the idea of your not being cut out for taking care of a pet just about laughable. As for your writing, well, I'd kill to string words together with the grace you manage. You're only deluding yourself if you think you're a useless human being, because I assure you you're anything but. You are a glorious creature. Your existence is one of brilliance and beauty. I beg you from the bottom of my heart not to believe anything other than that. Don't believe the words of nasty people who aren't your friends, and don't you dare heed whatever poison that harpy that gave you birth is filling your head with. You are wonderful and deserve every word of our praise and support, and not an ounce of the self-deprecation you heap upon yourself. 7
Zathoth Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 Spoilered because I may make things worse, Im no good at this encouraging speech thing. Well if you gave your ideas to Brandon he could probably do something really amazing with them, thing is Brandon didnt have your ideas, he isnt you, you are you, whoever you are. Whatever you end up writing wont be the same if you have someone else write them, they are yours, with your inprint, and that is what is interesting. And yeah, you are probably going to storm up a lot of things, everyone does, even your mother does, she just isnt very good at admitting it. When you mess up you fix whatever it was you messed up, or you pretend it never happened and make sure no one else ever will either, or you get mad and blame it on everyone else, but you are not her, you are awesome. Making mistakes isnt horrible, we all make mistakes, even 96 dimensional, tentacled overgods make mistakes. 3

Your first point reminds me of one of my favourite pieces of writing advice from Markus Zusak:Write something that is so you that no one else could have possibly written it. Twi: You will be absolutely fine. . New things are scary and difficult, especially major life changes like moving out of home. But here's the thing. Everyone does it. . Including a lot of people with actual disabilities. Including that guy Nick voy-something who was born with no arms and a tiny bit of one leg. It'll be new and different and scary, but you'll give Bruce a massive hug and he'll lick your face and whine, and you'll get through it. I promise. This doesn't sound like the capable, talented, intelligent and compassionate Twi I know talking. It sounds like your mother talking through you piling up insecurities. Don't listen to that voice Twi. Let everyone else in the world talk you down before you talk your own self down. Now go hug Bruce and apply some more. *hugs* Edited November 24, 2015 by Delightful 7
+Slowswift Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 So I just found out that Sleep No More was written by... Mark Gatiss. I am disappoint. 1
Silverblade5 he/him Posted November 25, 2015 Posted November 25, 2015 Started watching a show called Leverage. It's good.
TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted November 25, 2015 Posted November 25, 2015 Thanks everyone. I do feel better now. Still discouraged, but not like giving up anymore. I regained my ability to chuckle at things, two of which I'll share: 1. I wanted all of the jobs I was rejected from. Therefore, the only way to get a job is to only apply for jobs I really don't want! Foolproof! 2. Relevant Magazine has released their annual Christmas album, titled A Very Relevant Christmas. I don't know why I find this so amusing. 4
Allomancy she/her Posted November 25, 2015 Posted November 25, 2015 I AM SOOOOOO EXCITED FOR THANKSGIVING!!!!!!! ~(OuO)~ *do the wave* 3
+Slowswift Posted November 25, 2015 Posted November 25, 2015 Note to self: do not put turmeric in mac'n'cheese, even just a bit. It makes it taste somewhat odd. (Granted, it also could've been some of the other spices... but.) 1
ThirdGen Posted November 25, 2015 Posted November 25, 2015 I'm not going to be an Ookla. foodlyoot toot 1
