+Slowswift Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 Unpopular opinion: I actually enjoyed Well of Ascension oops Same actually. I had always thought of it as suffering from Middle Book Syndrome (and it does, to some extent), but then I reread it and fell in love all over again. And quick, random topic shift: Lark, I've been meaning to give WoT another go, after trailing off a few chapters in like six months ago. Worth it?
Mashadar Mistborn he/him Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 Same actually. I had always thought of it as suffering from Middle Book Syndrome (and it does, to some extent), but then I reread it and fell in love all over again. And quick, random topic shift: Lark, I've been meaning to give WoT another go, after trailing off a few chapters in like six months ago. Worth it? While I am not Lark, I would recommend it. I really like the series. Except for book ten. Just read a summary of book ten, you won't miss much.
Zathoth Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 I didnt find The Well of Ascension that dark, then again... I... am... me. I have The Eye of the World in my book shelf, waiting to be read, someday, when I feel like it. 2
Kestrel she/her Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 Yep, highly recommend. The fandom is actually a huge mess right now, at least on Tumblr. New book today. But I can give an accurate summary of book one. Nynaeve: //is a magical mother of all the village children Moiraine: //appears, is an even more magical mom in search of village children Nynaeve: ... fight. Fight me. Found on tumblr. 1
Mailliw73 he/him Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 (edited) I didnt find The Well of Ascension that dark, then again... I... am... me. I have The Eye of the World in my book shelf, waiting to be read, someday, when I feel like it. I recently read the first two books in the Gentlemen Bastards series and then I read the Dalinar preview from Oathbringer. So, when people were all commenting about how gorey it was, i was like "huh? Gorey?" And then I realized, yeah, I guess it was dark and gorey for Sanderson. Scott Lynch just dulled my senses. Edited November 4, 2015 by Mailliw73 3

And quick, random topic shift: Lark, I've been meaning to give WoT another go, after trailing off a few chapters in like six months ago. Worth it? Worth it. Not until the end, but worth it. One of the only times I cried from sheer emotional intensity was at the end of The Gathering Storm. 2

Ive read manga for the last 5 years and my tastes went way into the brutal and the bizarre so sure, Brandon has some very violent moments, but compared to what I am used to it is nothing. I have The Lies Of Locke Lamora waiting for me as well; I shall start as soon as I read the last couple chapters in The Name Of The Wind.
Mistrunner Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 I didn't exactly dislike Well of Ascension, I just found the slower pace more difficult to read. ADHD here. I'm blaming all my problems on those four letters. I'm sure it'll be fine in the end and I won't have to see a psychiatrist at all. ...wait, what was I talking about? 2
TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 Okay. Giving Well of Ascension another shot, but if I don't see some jackchulls get some comeuppance soon, I might go full Epic on somebody. …. Fine, I won't go full Epic. But I will grumble and grouch and wonder aloud how I'll manage to meme the book if I can't even get through it. 4

That being said, it is admittedly far less meme-able than Stormlight Archive is. Oh, it's pretty meme-able so far. I already have memes picked out for a few key events in TFE and WoA (though I'm worried there may not be enough scumbag hats to properly convey Cett and Straff ). It's more that I hate so many antagonists to the point that I had to force myself to keep reading a few scenes just to get through it. The part where Penrod delivered the city to Straff actually made me stop reading for a day or so, and I only just now picked it up again. Don't know why it was that specific moment and not one of many other hate sink moments, but that is what did it.. 2

Kobold King he/him Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 Doctor Who through Season 8 spoilers: Remember that oddly on-the-nose poem from Time of the Doctor about Eleven's regeneration? And now it's time for one last bow Like all your other selves. Eleven's hour is over now The clock is striking Twelve's. When I heard it in the trailers, I assumed that Tasha Lem or someone else knowledgeable had written it. It's a little too perfect for Eleven's regeneration to be just a random poem found in a party favor from the 21st century, right? Wrong. That's exactly where Clara found it. My theory? The poem didn't randomly fall into Clara's hands. It was placed there. Someone with the capability to time travel arranged for it to be sent, as a personal message to the Doctor. And who would that be? Missy. While one of the Doctor's oldest enemies, Missy has maintained in seasons 8 and 9 that she considers herself the Doctor's friend. And what value is a friend who doesn't try to comfort you in your darkest hour? She knew that Eleven's prospects for survival looked bleak, and that he firmly believed that he was at the end of his final life. She couldn't contact him directly, since she needed to maintain the timeline and ensure Twelve wouldn't recognize her. So she sent him a poem, writing it herself, murdering her way to the top of a party favor manufacturing plant, and using the magic of time travel to ensure Clara would carry it to the Doctor. It's up for debate whether Eleven recognized the hint for what it was, but I like to think it kindled a bit of hope in him. I also like this because it lends a bit of extra complexity to Missy. 3
DanTheSeamonster he/him Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 I'm back! I decided to take a leave of absence for a while to try and get a head start on NaNo this year. So... yeah. Finished the Grapes of Wrath. Good stuff! I'm reading East of Eden right now for my ENG 112 class. I'm only about 160 pages into it, but it's pretty good so far. I'd recommend it if you liked Steinbeck's other stuff. it's 8 minutes to the beginning of NaNoWriMo where I am. Anyone else taking part in the madness here? (I'm tempted to just count the words I'm using for my papers and thesis and projects...) Heh, speak of the devil! I am indeed doing NaNo, and am very surprised at how well I'm doing this year! Although yesterday I was on the forums and saw a guy with 30,000 words already and I was just Anyone want to be writing buddies on the NaNo site? I'm RangerofAnor there, if anyone's interested. I can definitely understand that. Every time I do NaNo, I have always had periods of regret, because I find that it doesn't encourage me to produce quality work. I know they say to just fill words and to edit later, but I honestly do not like it and find it suboptimal. I like my writing to be considered and careful, even on the first draft. But my biggest problem right now is:A. I tend to write more fanfiction than original work, andB. I don't have the discipline to sit down and produce something. In that sense, NaNo is great for me because it gives me a month I can set aside to focus on original work, and even better, to do so in the company of lots of people making the same journey For that reason, I'm participating. Sure! I'd love to be buddies! I'll see if I can find you on there! I didnt find The Well of Ascension that dark, then again... I... am... me. I have The Eye of the World in my book shelf, waiting to be read, someday, when I feel like it. I haven't really found anything of Sanderson's too dark, but my favorite genre of fantasy is grimdark...... I too have TEotW just sitting on my shelf. But...it's so big and it's only the first book in the series. So many books to read, so little time. Ohhhh I love that series! The Republic of Thieves kind of has a bad reputation, a lot of people don't like it as much as the first two. But I'll tell you here and now I love it just as much! Also if you like the darker themes of Lynch you'll probably like Brent Weeks, Peter V. Brett, Anthony Ryan and Brian McClellan. And to a lesser extent Pat Rothfuss as well. Yeah. I loved the Name of the Wind! It reminded me of a grown up Harry Potter. Even though the Kvothe is younger than Harry Well. At least in Deathly Hallows. WOA was difficult to get through. I feel you. Also, the move is 3 days away . Wish me luck. Good luck! Here, have an upvote for confidence! 2

It stares at me, mocks me with the knowledge that if I start it i wont stop until Ive read them all... The Name of the Wind is amazing. Pat really needs to release that third book so I can read the second one without having to wait for too long...

Edgedancer he/him Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 I have a confession for you all. I love Vin. I love Elend. Kelsier's crew is in top form as usual. Sazed and Tindwyl are amazing, and I want to give Demoux a pug hug. OreSeur is wonderfully snippy. If there are any other decent characters I missed, they're included in spirit. But I am not enjoying Well of Ascension. The writing is great. The world is innovative. The characters are well rounded. But only the decent ones are bearable. Every time someone other than one of the aforementioned characters appears on the page, I want to leap into Scadrial with a mannequin made entirely of middle fingers, and I want to beat them over the head with it. I hate them all that much. I haven't read any more in two days. I have chharacters to root for, and I'm rooting for them, but everyone else is just so despicable that I'm having a hard time getting through. Help? Or advice? Pictures of Demoux hugging a pug while Straff and Philen choke on their own smug smiles? I kind of know how you feel. I'm part of the people that aren't really that bothered by dark stuff (although I admit to still crying during emotinal moments ) but looking back on it I'm kind of meh about the first Mistborn triliogy because of that. As for Hero of Ages... well lets not get into spoilers. Did you see the picture of the mistraith that came up if you searched Google images? It was . . . lovely. And I always imagined koloss with horns for some reason. Still don't know why. Eh, I doubt a Mistwraith would bother with the hair.
Kobold King he/him Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 Great Noodly One. Is that a new fan nickname for mistwraiths? Because I accept it as such. 3
