Curious Anamaximder he/him Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 (edited) Sexism and blatant gender bias! Books with male leads who have some sort of neurosis or even mental illness (Death of a Salesman, Frankenstein, Catcher in the Rye) are not only accepted, but lauded as the highest in our literary canon, because--not in spite of--their lead characters. My teacher is female and hates Sanderson. School used to be fun. Edited September 21, 2015 by Venture Mistborn
Mistrunner Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 Really though, Oregon steals half its place names. In other news, you can thank Slowswift for getting me addicted to MLP. Thanks... I needed that... 2
TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 My teacher is female and hates Sanderson. It doesn't have to be male-vs-female for the bias to exist; women are by no means exempt from absorbing and exhibiting unfair assumptions about their own gender. I read one essay recently pointing out that male characters are more likely to be redeemed--and to have constant, unfailing support throughout the redemption process--than are women. A man who is redeemed is more likely to be quickly forgiven for murder, while a woman is more likely to have frequent relapses, even if her crimes were less severe than her male counterpart's. Yet these biases aren't often noticed--by men or women--because they're so ubiquitous hat we don't think about them anymore. 1

Orlion Blight he/him Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 Now hold on, what book did the teacher suggest? That's very important!
Curious Anamaximder he/him Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 Continued..... Me: Well... Mistborn is a beautiful fantasy novel about opression and hope. The cat in the hat is a unrealistic novel about kids consorting with mutant animals! Teacher: Well..... You have double homework. Me: I am the thing you can never kill. I am hope. Teacher: Triple work. 7

Kaymyth she/her Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 (edited) I got a really nice cost at from the thrift store for two dollars. It's missing two buttons, but shouldn't be hard to replace those. Changed my profile to show it off Now THAT is a Tenth Doctor coat! Today: Teacher: Want to read a book, class? Me: Yes! How about Mistborn! Teacher: That book is not worth reading. Vin is totally insane. I then excused myself to the restroom to go cry. ... I got nothin'. Except that if she thinks Vin is insane, I'd hate to see what she thinks of Wayne... Off topic, but I got an official "maybe" from the University of Jamestown* in North Dakota. Not an interview, but a "thanks for applying, sending your materials to the review board" email, so that's something. *Yeah, there's a Jamestown, Virginia and a Jamestown, North Dakota. Google Maps tells me there's also a Jamestown, California and a Jamestown, New York. We Americans like to troll the world by naming places after each other. Case in point: a town called Oregon in Wisconsin. Missouri has beat this to death itself. Cities in Missouri: Mexico, Paris, Cuba, Vienna, New London, Versailles (don't ask how it's pronounced, the answer will make you cry), New Madrid. We have a Texas county whose county seat is Houston. And that's just what I can think of off the top of my head. And I grew up in Memphis, MO in Scotland County, about 20 miles down the road from Lancaster. ETA: Venture, Please tell me that your teacher was joking about the double/triple homework. Because if she isn't, I am gonna make someone bleed. Edited September 21, 2015 by Kaymyth 5
Left he/him Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 I'm on a decorations committee with my best friends for a dance next January. The theme you ask? The Yule Ball from Goblet of Fire. Step one, movie night with friends!! I love my life. 2

TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 Let us know when we can celebrate your new job I will. And my new pug, when I get one. (I've decided to just go for it. It's more an investment in my future than just a fun diversion--I've found that pugs really do help my depression.)
Curious Anamaximder he/him Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 She seriously suggested "Cat in the Hat" instead of Mistborn? Yeah. America! The education system: Cat in the hat instead of Mistborn. 3
TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 Yeah. America! The education system: Cat in the hat instead of Mistborn. You could actually make a pretty compelling argument that the Cat is just as "insane" as Vin--though acts in a far more damaging way. Vin lied and stole to survive. The Cat broke into the house of two random children (breaking and entering, child endangerment) played with and outright destroyed their personal property (theft, damages) and much more--for the fun of it. Insane or not, Vin is a far more moral character. 2

Of course celebrating should involve a video of said pug bringing a shoe. Edit: what unit are you studying that could involve either Mistborn or the cat in the hat?? ThirdGen Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 Twi, if you dare: Mr. Sprinkles. NSFW, NSF Kids, and it will confirm how insane the Cat in the Hat is.

ThirdGen Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 Video. It was originally part of "Acceptable.tv", the VH1 spinoff of Channel101.com. They made, I think, 9(?) episodes, 3 minutes a piece.

RippleGylf she/her Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 Over the weekend I learned, on Saturday morning, that my cable provider decided, at some point over the summer, that BBC America would no longer be provided in my package. It's been a part of that package for as long as they've been my cable provider, which is pretty much my entire life. They did the change without notifying me. ...I didn't get to watch Doctor Who... I feel your pain. I can't get BBC America without paying an extra $25 a month for it. Stupid. Have a sympathy upvote.
TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 Well, I went to the pet store on a whim today. They have this little enclosure where they'll put two puppies at a time and let anyone who comes into the store pet them while they play. They have two pugs right now, and both were in the enclosure. Aaaannnnnd they both liked me. And they're both on sale. Still expensive, but on sale. My parents said they're willing to help me buy it so I won't have to pay interest, and then I can just pay them back. My mom is talking to my dad soon, but….it looks like I might be getting a pug before too long. 11
