Random Stuff II

Family pictures... I can't say I hate them, exactly, because in my family they happen so rarely we can't be choosy with location, clothes, or whatever else. There's six of us kids, a fifteen-year span, and my oldest brother has three kids. So when we get together we get what we get.

Drove a total of 22 hours today and yesterday. This is very... Um... I really can't think right now.

 

They don't happen very often in our family, either—at least not anymore. Back before my brother and I started working, we'd get family photos taken every year; but now that one of my sisters is working too, and mine is the only schedule that remains mostly consistent, we just haven't been able to pin down one day that we'd all be off work and out of school….until today. And then there's the fact that I'm looking for a career in states besides Washington, Oregon, and Idaho (which I have begun calling "The Danger Zone" in my head as I look at postings ), my brother is going to stay in Arizona for at least the next six months, and this is the first weekend my dad has been able to come home for a visit since he started his new job back in Spokane….and it's not surprising that my mom was so desperate to have pictures done RIGHT STORMING NOW.

 

….I just wish we could've had them done indoors.

 

As for driving—yikes. I know how that feels. I can only recall one move where we flew, and I know it wasn't the South Carolina-to-Wyoming one, because I remember hearing my parents announce which states we'd entered as we drove through them. That much driving is rough.

Yeah. The last pictures we took as a family were at my sister's wedding, and storming gaks I just realized I'm one of two of my siblings that is not in college

My little brother is the only child in our family who is not either in college or graduated from college, and he's a junior. My sister, who is the oldest of the four of us, has a Master's degree in Psychology and recently had her first child. I know I shouldn't because I'm really not, but sometimes I feel really, sparking old.

I was briefly chatting with a stranger today (a side effect of walking a puppy) and they guessed I was still in high school (generally 18 or younger here). I'm 22 and just finished my Bachelor's degree It's not an uncommon mistake though, at least not when I've shaved recently. 4

I regularly get pegged as 5-10 years younger than I am.  It was annoying as heck back when I was in my 20's and people kept assuming I was in high school, but now that I'm creeping towards 40 it's quite nice.

Hmm, using 2 of the most iconic Dr Who villains in the first 4 episodes of the 5th season. I spose I get it with the new Doctor and all, but I generally enjoy the episodes that have a new race more. I find retreads of the daleks start to get a bit repetitive after a while.

I was mistaken for a boy, once. I was probably nine, had just cut my hair to slightly shorter than chin length, and was wearing a little league soccer jersey.

Over the weekend I learned, on Saturday morning, that my cable provider decided, at some point over the summer, that BBC America would no longer be provided in my package.

 

It's been a part of that package for as long as they've been my cable provider, which is pretty much my entire life.

 

They did the change without notifying me.

Sexism and blatant gender bias! Books with male leads who have some sort of neurosis or even mental illness (Death of a Salesman, Frankenstein, Catcher in the Rye) are not only accepted, but lauded as the highest in our literary canon, because--not in spite of--their lead characters.

Morzathoth really has a point with the whole "living in a dying world where ash falls from the sky, there's a dictatorship of unimaginable horribleness and oppression, and need I go on?" thing.

Exactly! Why should the story of a grieving, traumatized man whose quest to raise the dead goes horribly right be studied in schools, but the story of a thief with trust issues in a dying world be dismissed because the main character "is totally insane"? I don't play the sexism card often, but calling a man's mental issues "tragic" and a woman's issues "insane" is a pretty clear case of bias.

Especially since insane connotes the inability to function normally in any sense. Paranoid, hurt, defensive yes, but Vin is not insane.

Off topic, but I got an official "maybe" from the University of Jamestown* in North Dakota. Not an interview, but a "thanks for applying, sending your materials to the review board" email, so that's something.

*Yeah, there's a Jamestown, Virginia and a Jamestown, North Dakota. Google Maps tells me there's also a Jamestown, California and a Jamestown, New York. We Americans like to troll the world by naming places after each other. Case in point: a town called Oregon in Wisconsin.
