uglyllama Posted July 28, 2017 Posted July 28, 2017 The Thrawn Trilogy is very good. Timothy Zahn (the author) is a great author--all of the books I mentioned are by him. Is it the best place to start, I'm not sure. But it's not a bad place at all. I vaguely remember liking the Hand of Thawn duology better, but I could be mistaken, it's been several years.
Briar King Posted July 28, 2017 Posted July 28, 2017 That trilogy is set 5 yrs after ROTJ. They have Truce at Bakura which takes place the day after ROTJ, Shadows of Mindor just a few yrs after ROTJ, Courtship of Princess Leia few yrs ROTJ. the old legends has a vast number of books. Their should be a timeline in the book for all titles that you can see if they are new printed Legends. It became standard in NJO which you should def read.
Leiasqz she/her Posted July 28, 2017 Posted July 28, 2017 I'm currently reading way too many books as usual, but on different mediums (anyone else do that?). So: Normal book: Assasin's Price by L.E Modesitt Jr. Audible: Red Sister by Mark Lawrence Kindle: Deep Water by Pamela Freeman .. and then a casual reread of the Wheel of Time when I need to skim something light after a long day at work.. 1

I always have a audiobook for exercise and driving (currently on Words of Radiance) A normal book (currently To Green Angel Tower) A short story collection bc I can't start a regular book on the same day I finish one so I read short stories for the rest of the day. Don't ask me explain (currently Songs of a Dying Earth). My third time through the malazan series is very casual. I am reading one book/part that is within every book every month (if that makes sense) 1

Awesome to see another Modesitt reader on here! There've been a few other members that read his works, but most have either lost interest in him or aren't very active on the forum. I'm about three fourths of the way into Deadhouse Gates now, I've been Very busy so I simply haven't been able to devote the time to reading. I'm putting Faust on hold until I get home for the same reason, I just don't have the time and energy in the day to give it what it deserves. I'll have about two weeks of downtime once I get home so hopefully I'll manage to plow through Faust and Memories of Ice before I leave for BYU.

Any tips on how to get it loud enough to drown out your own workout noise, but not so loud that it makes your ears bleed?

Well you know what they say, 1 is 1, 2 is 10 I'll try to be active on the forums, but I'm already noticing I don't have much input on the various fan theories, which (so far) seems the most active part. Which is as it should be. Guess those other people don't know what they're missing in terms of "constant book flow". With Sanderson and Modesitt combined there is a lot of new reading material each year.
Briar King Posted July 28, 2017 Posted July 28, 2017 I tried Recluse 1 a few years ago. Never made it past 125 pgs. That was really boring.

Do you use the earbuds that are a small cyclinder that you have to put in your ear? It seals off the outside world and works better tham the ones that rest against the eat. Kered he/him Posted July 29, 2017 Posted July 29, 2017 Just opened up The Passage by Justin Cronin. One of my all time favorite books is The Stand. This book/trilogy seems to be in the same vein as The Stand, but a bit more dynamic and a lot more gruesome. If you're looking for a good apocalyptic story with a little bit of technology and supernatural mixed in, I highly recommend it.

StormingTexan he/him Posted July 29, 2017 Posted July 29, 2017 Funny way back in 2012 and we eventually did get a story with Hoid in the background. We find out the answer to the question asked above 4 years later. I hope we get the same from Hoid's POV as he's made his cameos through the Cosmere books.

What made you feel it was boring? I actually felt that way about both The Fellowship of the Ring (took three tries) and The Eye of the World (took two tries) back in the day, but friends insisted I read them so I tried again.

rmmateus he/him Posted July 30, 2017 Posted July 30, 2017 Hi, I'm new here and already loving this. I'm reading Three Moments of an Explosion by China Miéville. It's so weird that I can't even say if I'm enjoying it. A lot different from some of his other books. I was thinking of going back to Discworld next, but I'm very hungry for WoT, so I'll probably find myself reading New Spring without realizing it. I think Ruin's telling me to do it
Steeldancer he/him Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 I recently read a book called Blink. It discusses the subconcious mind, and how instant analysis and things are made. It was fascinating. I would highly reccomend it. Its well written, and I think it is very accurate about the fact that sometimes a split decision can be much more accurate than a long, thought out decision. Sadly now I'm reading the Kiterunner, which seems determined to make me lose my faith in humanity. Why it was assigned for summer reading, I have no idea. 1

If you have read any of them before then New Spring will be hard to get into. 1

For a first timer through WoT I wouldn't read New Spring until a bit into the series (or actually, not until it came out in publication order). At least for me it would spoil a lot of the mystery of what was going on in the first book. 1

It actually gave some good character building on a few people that I appreciated connecting to when I got to main bks. I didn't find anything spoiled with this order. Still it's a bad book compared to main so if your going to tackle WoT I say get it out of the way as it's a prequel and the bar is lower compared to others so a new reader won't find it near as bad. I've read the series 3 times and only bothered with NS the 1st time. I've had people thank me afterward that went this route and people tell me they wish they had done it cause they couldn't finish it. Lol that 2nd reaction always amuses me haha 1
Leiasqz she/her Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 Very minor spoilers for WoT here: Spoiler What I mean is, if you do New Spring first, you will know exactly what Moiraine and Lan (and later Siuan) are doing, the first time you see them. Part of the mystery of the whole first book is "what are they doing, what is their agenda?". It becomes more of less clear a bit into the second book, but before that, you don't know. At least for me, knowing beforehand would ruin part of the reading experience, because I wouldn't get to puzzle it out on my own. In other news, finished both the Modesitt book and Alcatraz #5, now off to read Aether of night! 1
