In the end, I succumbed to peer pressure from a friend: I have started reading the Chronicle of the Unhewn Throne. Brent Weeks will have to wait till after I am done with it.

I finished Kings of the Wyld by Eames which just came out. I thought it was really funny and a very good book. One reviewer compares it to a combination of Joe Abercrombie and Terry Pratchett which is fairly accurate  (although I see more of the latter than the former).

I just finished Chronicle of the Unhewn Throne 2 nights ago. It was pretty enjoyable. A lot of character growth and giant, bad chull, war birds. I hope you like it too. On the same note, I was also debating over Chronicle or Brent Weeks. I'm now going to start Black Prism.

 Looks like we both had the same dilemma. I ended picking Chronicle of the Unhewn Throne because I had someone insisting I should whom is re-reading it at the same time as I am reading it. So, I am liking it and I have someone to share my impressions and thoughts I move through it.

Then, I will definitely plunged within the Black Prism.

So far, my 2017 reading list is going quite well :)

I finished the first book in the Earthsea trilogy. It was pretty good, the style is very different from anything else I've read. I'm taking a short break before reading the next one. I've started Dan Wells Hollow City. It's very good so far.

Second one has a far different(in my mind) writing style and pacing. Not to mention we don't get to see Ged for a couple chapters at the beginning if I remember right.

Well I had quite the busy reading weekend. I finished The Hollow City (Another excellent book by Dan Wells, although not as unique and new as the John Cleaver books), and started Flowers for Algernon. I got about halfway through it last night, and I should finish it in the next couple days. So far it's really really good. The plot is basically some scientists taking Forest Gump and giving him a surgery so that he becomes Frasier from Cheers/Frasier. It's written as a logbook from the guy's perspective, and it is very hard to put down.

It's been a couple of months since I last updated this, but they haven't been good reading months for me. I got stuck on Night of the Dragon for a long time - it was just not a book I felt like reading.

I did follow it with Brandon's Snapshot, which I enjoyed.

Just before or just after (I can't remember) Snapshot, I read Brandon's Oathbringer chapters from Unfettered II, which he calls The Thrill. If you haven't read them, they are the first (I think) several flashback chapters for Dalinar, back in the days when he and Gavilar were doing the majority of their Alethkar conquest. It was interesting to not only see this side of Dalinar, but to also read a number of flashback chapters back to back, to see the story they tell.

Most interestingly, perhaps, is that I finally got to read the City of Miracles ARC I won from Goodreads. My review on the website is extensive enough, so I'll just say that it was really good.

I am now back to my World of Warcraft novelization (re)read with Arthas: Rise of the Lich King.

@AerionBFII I'll be interested to hear your opinion on Melissa McPhail's books. I read the first one and had mixed feelings about it, haven't picked up any of the others yet.

Definitely heavy reading but a good series with excellent worldbuilding and the author is big on exploring 'for the greater good' themes. I went through a dry spell of humongous soulsucking fantasy books so i gave the series a go. Sanderson, Jordan and Rothfuss have spoiled me... sigh... Book 3 is especially grim so i feel i should warn you.

@AerionBFII Yeah, I remember being impressed by the world-building in book 1 as well as the plot twists and the explosive climax, but the buildup was a bit slow for my liking. Then again, similar things could probably be said about The Way of Kings, lol. I think I'll give the series another try.

Wow! Its cool that you were able to get it so many months in advance. I love this series and can't wait to see how it ends. It will be interesting what the author decides to do next. I believe he has stated that it will be a trilogy and these books are a pretty big departure from his previous books (which going off of plots I have no interest in reading). Hopefully he will do something similar to the trilogy he just completed.

Picked up the Dangerous Women collection, which is where SfSitFoH is from, and so far it's...underwhelming.

@Jondesu Do you mean that the anthology other than Brandon's story is underwhelming, or the whole thing is, or just SfSitFoH?

The other stories I've read so far from it. The first one wasn't bad, but the second made no sense and the third was just weird.

It is an anthology of a bunch of different authors from different genres so it stands to reason that you'll get a variety of quality, plus some stories which migth be good, but don't hold your attention because they are about things that you don't care about.  Its been a while since I read through it, but I remember liking most of the stories to some degree.

I have finished the Emperor's Blades :) I enjoyed myself: the story is very character oriented which suit ed my needs quite beautifully. Also, Valyn makes me think of Adolin (which is how the story was sold to me initially), so this is bonus points to me.

I have thus started reading the second book of the trilogy. I do not regret postponing reading Brent Weeks for this.

I read the trilogy last week (disclaimer: I get to read at work) and had a blast with it. Valyn also reminded me of Adolin. Finishing up the first in lightbringer tonight.

I agree mostly. Shadows was good, and the real shining star is the Dance with Dragons GRRM story about the first Targaryen civil wars.
