“Shelter.” She hesitated. “The Still Wind directed us here.”

The voice laughed. “I wouldn’t believe you, if I couldn’t see you. But your lack of fire speaks for itself.”

The doors creaked open, groaning in protest as the warped wood scraped the frame.

A man, skinny, smiled at them from within. “I only hope you aren’t thieves. Couldn’t stop you if I wanted to!”

"I only steal if I need to survive."

He laughed. “Story of us all, in these cursed times. My food is your food, all that. Doesn’t matter anymore, what with our coal destined to run out.”

He lead them into the manor. “Tell me! How is the world of the living? Is Ganare still in power?”

Uh

Name I came up with on the spot. This guy wouldn’t know the climate of things, so he wouldnt know to call them Noble. It ain’t really important, so I just made a name.

House Ganare is what eventually became Noble

The man grinned. “Thank you. You might talk to the servants - though they’re less as such now, and more family.”

You can do so now, if ya want. I know (I think it was him?) Roy wanted to join, and I was thinking of placing him where you are.

You would be in captivity of the Noble soldiers that came to put down the riot.

She nodded. “Ganare.. I can’t say I’m familiar with the name.”

He nodded. “I see. Come - let me introduce you to the rest of the survivors.”

The man lead them into the dining hall, which had been repurposed to habitats the survivors. “Most of the servants quarters and many rooms in the upper wings have collapsed. Or there’s a major draft… or a leak… well, we’ve reconvened here, anyways.”

One of the survivors took the man’s arm, facing them. “Why are ya ‘ere now? I wan’t aware any knew of us.”

She sighed quietly, then searched for a guitar/sitar-like instrument, and she began to sing in a language none of them understood.

The woman snorted. “Anyone can speak gibberish. I understand there’s another way to tell?”

She seemed to know more than she should.

What is the other way?

“It’s not gibberish. It is the original form of our language. It has evolved so much the original is unrecognizable. Felicity gave the language to me.”

She snorted. “Anyone can say that.”
