i was sick

There was one main hall, where most of the people seemed to be living in. Other wings were abandoned or destroyed.

@Born of Mist

Most of the people seemed to be slightly sick - gathered all into one room, it seemed slightly unsanitary.

The bard found a place to sit and began quietly plucking a string instrument. It seemed to be some form of meditation.

He begins asking the people where they are from.

Most rooms were broken down.

”Sir?”

She didn’t see. Her eyes were either closed or watching her fingers. Her lips moved though she didn’t speak.

The figure looked at the soldier, sighing before continuing. “I am Death, and this is my son, Nikolas.”

He looked at the two prisoners. “I would ask you to fear him.”

The grey man dissolved into dust, then reformed behind the soldier. He gave a sad smile, and put a cloth to his mouth, setting him down as he fell unconscious.

He looked to you two, undoing your bonds setting a warm lantern next to them.

”You can’t stay here - the lantern has limited fuel. You can either go back up that road, where you’ll come to a Noble-controlled town. Or, you can take the trek to their destination, which was recently taken by the Masks.”

He hesitated. “Both are rather unpleasant at the moment, but there is not much of an alternative.”

He stepped towards Nikolas, wrapped in a blanket and staring blankly. “If you’ll excuse me, I need to find a healer.”

The two stepped into the night, quickly disappearing from sight.

Nope, I think I'm stupid.

Carlom looks around.

[In the main hall]

The doors to the main hall burst open in a gust of wind, revealing two figures. A loud voice echoed out.

”I am Death, and I bring with me my son. I gift him to you, for a time, to receive your care and so you may nurture him back to health.”

The other figure was Nikolas.

@Spark of Hope

To Felicity:

This is my plan.

@Born of Mist

With his coming, a silent question entered his mind. Who are you?

@Kansas Stormcursed

Though it’s not really my thing, I am curious to see how you handle this.

The words were spoken directly in his mind, gentle but strong. There was no indication of its source.

To Lissy, or the bard? From Death? And Death is Jakob, right?

Shielding this thought from her bard, she replied, And your endgame?

Last time Jakob had a “son,” Jakob had to execute him personally. He became known as a vicious warmongerer.

And right now, that son is back, spreading rumors that will in no way help his pain.

I want to show him that his power, his intervention, it can help, not just hurt. And it starts by saving these people.

Hopefully.

Right now, the warmonger is spreading rumors in a reincarnated body that he was the one to slay… himself. He’s setting himself up as a white knight, and, in the short term, I want to use Nikolas to offset that before it gets out of hand.

And in the long term, Nikolas will be an example.

But he’s dying. I managed to heal him from the worst of his wounds, but he needs help - he needs the Benefits of being a Servant, like you had so long ago. And like your bard. Can you contact the other grey folk, help argue my case?

… fine. I guess if Jakob comes back and this winter ends. What is Nikolas’s story?

She spoke to her bard. Request that he be brought by your mat and play for him.

She blinked in confusion for a moment, then turned to one of the others. “Can you bring him over here?"

He was indeed a child of this manor, but early in his life, their sole vehicle was attacked by a bear, with him and the Servant Ann within.

I saved them, though they may not know it.

Ann, unable to return to the manor, raised him as her brother, but as stores of coal ran out, she was forced to join the Masks for their protection. Nikolas did the same.

And then, Ann was killed by the Masks, because she was unwilling to take down a mark. I am not sure who the mark was, but I have light suspicions.
