Big spoilers for stonewalkers chapter 3

Spoiler

One of the notable lore drops in Stonewalkers is the introduction of The Gray Remnant spren. Specifically compared to the Nightwatcher as both being “Legendary unique spren… Both are sapient, powerful demigod-like characters with their own motivations and agendas for the future of Roshar.

In the adventure, The Gray Remnant is found in ancient tunnels below Rathalas, and provides crucial plot information to the PCs in exchange for giving it a “Painful Secret” to forge a connection to keep the spren connected to the physical world. It’s says that he has slumbered there for thousands of years.

The Gray Remnant is treated to be almost omniscient, able to answer almost any question the party has, particularly relating to the plot, but also about the heralds, specific spren, and the nature of nahel bonds, and surges.

This omniscience led to the Vorin church hiding information related to him, as it falls too close to future-telling. Assumably that censorship was during the hierocracy, but it’s isn’t specified.

an important line is in one of the prescribed answers to likely questions, he (and it does specify that The Gray Remnant uses he/him pronouns) refers to The Nightwatcher as his mother.

Is there a question here or a topic you want to discuss?

Seems like a suped up cryptic which is interesting since Stormfather and Nightwatcher are kinda like suped up honor- and cultivationspren. I wonder if you can make a Bondsmith with it and if other of the truespren have suped up versions. There is also some unmade vibes here. I'd like to learn more about this.

Just spitballing could a cryptic have gotten a boon or a bane from the nightwatcher? That made them into this unique spren?
im curious if this spren is a one off or if we should expect/theorize about what other unique spren could exist.

like what would a super up version of a mistspren look like?

Could be. Just going off of his appearance and the fact that he seeks a "painful" truth, I'd also suggest that he may also be some kind of super painspren.

Of course, that's just what painspren look like in the Physical Realm.. They have full bodies in the Cognitive Realm and it seems like the Gray Remnant would not.

I'm also curious about the fact that he's under Rathalas. Like he must have been present for the fire. And perhaps encountered Nergaoul during that same event.

I like painspren a lot better, would be interesting if it was a combo of different spren types because a super pain spren seems like it would be into torture instead of truth but combining spren seems like a can of worms.

I will say the gray Remnant doesn't look like a cryptic. I wonder why it looks like this, could it be affected by the death of the people of rathalas and be taking the forms of their hands? I also wonder what the gray remnant would look like in the cognitive realm

To me it kinda looks like a cryptic made out of painspren, if that makes sense. What's interesting to me is that it's been there for thousands of years. It may have been some kind of Elevated Spren, like the Oathgates are Highspren, that has gotten messed up in the Recreance or something. We don't know if it's always been like this, just that the Vorin priests wanted to hide it.
