So the Island and Village are the best two places to search (as in most likely to get results), followed by the Coastline.

(That order only goes for those who, like me, won't get any boost from their power for going to these places. Make your own judgements, y'all.)

I think coastline might be the way we can escape. I’m not curtain as I’m only halfway through reading the book

Long Game 105 - Day Three: Accusation

Accusations flew during the night. I stayed silent. I didn't trust anyone. I would have to take matters into my own hands if we were ever going to find the doppelgangers.

~

LG105 Day Three has begun!

No one has been sent back to Central!

Votecount:

The Wandering Wizard (2): Ashbringer, TJ

The vote minimum of 3 has not been met.

Things to Note:

  • You can Explore locations today, but voting does not resume until the next turn.
  • Actions can be sent in within your GMPM and must specify a location to search.
  • Remember that all italics are purely flavor!
  • And even the non italicized mechanical text can be misleading without full context.
  • Remember also that it is against the rules to directly quote from your GMPM, only paraphrasing is allowed.
  • I almost certainly won't be able to do rollover on time this weekend, so while the cycle will close at 12:30 on Saturday the 2nd of May, official rollover is going to be given a whole day, with Night Four opening sometime Sunday (I'll aim for the normal time)

Players:

Spoiler
  1. @|TJ| Linguist
  2. @KelsierApologist Psychologist
  3. @The Wandering Wizard Surveyor
  4. @Ashbringer Medic
  5. @Quivil Biologist Team Leader
  6. @Hoid Slayer Anthropologist
  7. @RoyalBeeMage Archeologist

Available Locations for Exploration:

Spoiler

Base Camp

You have arrived, after a now foggy and forgotten journey from the border, to the Base Camp. You found stored supplies to supplement what you traveled with. You set up your tents and equipment, which is outdated due to the proscription of modern technology in Area X.

Perhaps it wouldn't be polite to go snooping through someone's tents, but what they don't know can't hurt them.

Besides, can they really blame you for looking for clues as to their humanity?

Linguist's Tent

Psychologist's Tent

Surveyor's Tent

Medic's Tent

Biologist's Tent

Anthropologist's Tent

Archeologist's Tent

Abandoned Village

The records from previous expeditions speak of an abandoned village in the same direction as the Lighthouse. Not much is known about this village, but the records claim that previous searches proved fruitless.

Perhaps with the Surveyor's newly detailed maps, you can find something more here. The previous expeditions found nothing, hey, maybe you'll be special.

The Tunnel

You have learned some about this mysterious structure, but surely there must be something at the bottom of those stairs or a message in those cryptic words.

Lighthouse

The Lighthouse is perhaps the most prominent feature of Area X. You have been tasked with exploring it and uncovering the information hidden therein. Even if you weren't under orders, you would still feel drawn there. Something inexplicable pulls you. As if its long dormant light were focused on you and only you.

Island Y

Little is known of this island except its existence. It is not considered a priority, but there must be some information hidden in its own smaller lighthouse and village.

Up the Coast

It has been determined that the secret of Area X does not lie along the coast. It is outside the purview of your mission, though you may explore here if necessary.

But what does Central know? Has any of their information been right so far?

Sorry for disappearing last turn.

It’s probably a good idea to do an exe tomorrow. I would have joined the Wiz train had I seen it.

I’m headed to the coast, myself

I really don’t like the assumption that heading towards the coast is heading back, because the exe is heading back.

Additionally, I think this points to something suspicious about Quivil. She’s claimed a couple things based solely on assumption that seem almost designed to discourage exploration.

For example, this wasn’t based on anything.

Hey guys guess what

I was right

There's only one thing at each place

(I admit, I don’t know how people quote from other threads)

I also have another question. Later you say

Quote

when I visited the Inverted Tower yesterday I found the same thing again that I found on day one

Which… Return Anew was shared with everyone, and we don’t know who found it. @Quivil, did you get the same straight text as last time?

Anyway, both claims just serve to discourage exploration and prevent us from finding our wincon.

Wiz also falls in my ill graces for a similar reason — he doesn’t explore well. Specifically, he doesn’t find anything, and he doesn’t even reach his destination. Now, I didn’t find anything either in the village, and we haven’t heard from @Hoid Slayer and gotten his report, but I’m worried that he may be obscuring results.

Again, please share your locations. One person who does not share will go on a magical field trip with me down the coast.

Finally, let’s end on a question. Why is it up the coast? We don’t have any compasses. It could just as easily be down.

It's not my fault, I pave the road so other can find things. I wouldn't be surprised if my role made it so I was less likely to find anything

Honestly? I’ll have a better opinion of your ability if either someone finds something at the island or Slayer comes back with something from the village. If we get some proof, yeah, I’ll advocate for a Quivil exe

The tunnel just has the Return Anew wincon. (I'm sure of this. I found it twice.)

First - I'm sure I shared, in my summary, on cycle one, which you would have seen if you had been paying attention, which you should have been because you literally asked me for that summary, that I found the Return Anew wincon. I also seem to remember specifically telling you that the "specimen" you were told (in italics) that I found was probably the Return Anew wincon.

Second - No. I got a cutoff of the words "Return Anew" and a (paraphrased from memory; TUA you're free to check when last I read it) "Wait, you already found that. Why are you here again?" along with a request for me to no longer explore there so TUA wouldn't have to write the Crawler scene. (I previously gave most of this information, too. Maybe go back and reread what you missed.)

I'm trying to discourage extraneous, re-exploration that would just make it take longer for us to reach our wincon.

So you're suspicious of Wizard because, instead of actually finding stuff himself, he permanently makes it easier for others to find stuff.

I think it's stupid for you to be suspicious of someone over how their non-AI power works.

Overall I think you're a doppelganger trying to sow chaos and get people exed when (in the turn you missed - you should really go back and at least skim it) we discussed the fact that it's probably not worthwhile to exe people, partially because it's not even in the Village wincon to exe people.

That or you really haven't been paying attention.

I'm going to explore somewhere outside of camp. Polly, if you kidnap me, I will vote for you. You have been notified.

If you guys get your actions in in the next twelve hours, I think I can pull off a normal, albeit potentially slightly long rollover. Looking at the schedule for wrestling tomorrow, I'm going to try even if you send your actions in later than that, but it could take a while.

Yup, got it.

Sorry everyone, Ive had a busy afternoon and I was working on a really long post that I never got around to finishing, but it’s late so I guess really long post can wait till tomorrow morning.

In the meantime, I have some things I would like to comment.

I literally gave a summary of my findings last night. I won’t find it right now, but basically, I found some weird plants, tried to touch it, didn’t work. You can go check it out.

Gonna go for the Tunnel this time. Surely cryptic words = job for a Linguist

Yup. I was just about to suggest you do that after reviewing the past cycles.

NO! Again, I stand firmly by the position that an exe will ALWAYS BE A BAD THING. At the best, we hit right and purify our info a little. At the worst, we hit wrong and help the elims win. It’s NOT WORTH IT.

Unless the doppels win by majority, not extermination…

Anyone else think Quivil is acting WAYYYYY too aggressive here? The forcing away from potentially crucial info and wild defensive acusaciones towards Polly read a lot like a desperate elim.

That said, even though I suspect Quivil of being a doppelgänger, I would oppose exeing her just in case, just maintaining a measure of doubt over her claims.

Personally, I think I’ll go check out the island, but keep in mind folks that my ability has nothing to do with exploration.

Tomorrow I’ll be releasing a post with a summary of everything we know so far along with my personal notes. Hopefully we can piece this puzzle together.

I understand your angle here, and I get why you might be a little tired, but I don't think we should let player disagreements get in the way of completing the mission.

Another thing, before I get on to the long part: can we have as many people as possible share what their special abilities are? That would really help us optimize our exploration. So far, we know I (anthropologist) can discover someone else's ability in tent searches (although I'd rather they just share it openly), Polly (biologist) can bring people to a location, and TJ (linguist) can decipher text or something. That would really help us plan stuff better and get to the bottom of this.

I'm also quite sus of @Quivil's argument that there is only one thing at each place, as that seems clearly inaccurate. However, I do believe that the same person shouldn't search the same space multiple times.

Below, a compilation of Everything We Know, color coded by Who Found It:

Spoiler

Topographical Anomaly / Inverted Tower: C1 (Polly, Quivil) C2 (Quivil)

Spoiler

Pretty much nothing was known at the start.

C1 (almost definitely legit):

Was never described in previous missions.

Disc of stone / short, cylindrical pedestal protruding from the ground. On top of disc, rectangular opening with a spiral staircase leading down into Tunnel.

Leads to landings with arched doorways.

Every so often, landings branch off.

Writing on wall references jealous searchers searching for something despite continued failure. Sentences never seem to end.

Writing is actually fungus, spits spores at Quivil when she gets close.

Return Anew wincon discovered; creates doppelgangers.

My notes:

Return Anew was likely released by the spores. Wonder if Quivil can do something similar in other places? @Quivil would be useful to know your ability.

Fully agree with @|TJ| going to explore the writing here.

C2:

Found nothing.

My notes: I really think we shouldn't be sending people to the same place multiple times. Also, I don't really trust Quivil, but I think this info is probably legit.

Lighthouse: C1 (TJ, Ash) C2 (TJ)

Spoiler

Most prominent feature of Area X. We were tasked with exploring it and uncovering the information within. Even if we weren't within orders, we would still feel drawn there. Something inexplicable pulls us. As if its long dormant light were focused on us and only us.

C1 (almost definitely legit):

Picked up a family portrait of some kind.

Found squat.

C2:

Noticed a new rug, with hidden trapdoor. Leads to pile of books with journals of past expeditions. Confirmed everyone starts with same wincon.

My notes: I don't really know.

Village: C1 (Wiz, Royal Bee Mage) C2 (Hoid, Polly)

Spoiler

Just an abandoned village on the way to the lighthouse.

C1 (almost definitely legit):

Surveyor had large detached maps (Wiz, care to explain?)

Buildings look like they've been decaying for far too long, collapsed and destroyed.

Plant-people everywhere.

Spooked by animal noises.

My notes:

Besides Wiz's maps, I wonder if seeing the plant-people has anything to do with Bee's ability, and if perhaps we should prioritize sending him to places. I also wonder if these have anything to do with the doppelgangers. The animal noises are also a little sus, but maybe just flavor. @The Wandering Wizard, did you also see the plant-people?

C2:

Found nothing.

Village looks much older than it really is. Small objects seem to have vanished entirely. Entire place is covered in strange vines and plants, but no humanoids. I tried to touch a strange plant, but just got a splitting headache and an eery sense of wrongness.

My notes: I wonder if what I saw as strange plants are the same thing Bee interpreted as people, due to some unique ability. I feel like there is more to explore here.

Island Y:

Spoiler

Little is known except for its existence. Not considered a priority, but there could be some hidden information in its own lighthouse and village.

Up the Coast:

Spoiler

We are made to believe the secret of Area X does not lie here. Miserable, marshy terrain.

Long Game 105 - Night Four: Relaxation

Hey, guys, I’m sorry. There’s no excuse for my weird mess ups, and I’ve just generally had bad comprehension this game.

Quivil and Slayer especially. I messed up bad.

No hard feelings 🙃

I’m especially interested in seeing what TJ found

I, personally, was forced along to the coast by Polly, and I didn’t really find anything interesting

As we trudged up the coast, it all seemed really nice and beautiful, almost creepily perfect

After that, we just returned to base

I suggest we all share experiences here as son as possible, so we can get to calculating our next move

I tried to medic Wizard, and instead seemingly just snooped him and found where he’d previously explored (which is consistent with what he’s said, so not as helpful).

Weirdly, that didn’t happen on the first person I mediced. But I’m not entirely sure what happened on them, need to double check.

Wiz was with me.

Italics say that the the previous visitors seemingly lied about the tunnel. The tunnel is moving, not in location, but like a living, breathing thing. Walls are not made of stone, but seemingly out of flesh. We're left wondering if the tunnel had changed since the previous visit, or if the previous visitors lied.

I find the words mentioned by others. It is made up of mushrooms as described previously. I also do the same mistake as the Biologist. I lean in and can't help but breathe in the spores.

Not sure if I can c/p it, but paraphrasing of the words - it's something about sinners who are worms in nature.

In non-italics - the text analysis basically says at least one player who visited the tower (it doesn't say if it is initially visited so could include Wiz as well) and discovered the Return Anew wincon is now a doppelganger. It doesn't say if they immediately turned doppelganger or if they turned a cycle later, though I suspect the latter.

In addition, I hid something I found at the Lighthouse last cycle because it was important and I was worried that if I revealed it and the doppelgangers somehow had gotten a kill, they would have targeted me with it, so I wanted to keep it to myself until we knew more. And with the info gained this cycle, I think it's sensible to reveal it now.

I gained a passive ability called 'Return'. This ability means if I get removed through a vote (essentially leaving Area X), there's a 50% chance that I take down the doppelganger with me (not sure if they are killed or 'removed' with me). It is EXPLICITLY stated that this ability only works if I am removed and NOT if I am killed, which is why I did not want to reveal it last cycle.

This, coupled with my suspicion/guess that I would be turned to a doppelganger next turn due to inhaling the spores makes perfect sense to go for it.
