She grimaced.

“I could, connected to the Rift… but it likely wouldn’t work, due to plot limitations. I can, however, give everyone armor.”

A glowing layer flashed around each of the characters, then vanished. Lati included.

“There. They’ll all be fine now.”

@Through The Living Glass @Hoid Slayer and I think @Ancient Elantrian and @SpiritOfWrath

Lati yelped and stayed hidden.

209845 payed dim attention to their conversation. Elan seemed to know things 209845 had no idea existed... something it was used to by this point, but no less intrigued by.

209845 continued to make its way towards the Ambassador, a large dark blob in the other end of the tunnel whose smoky tendrils extended across the cavern. It couldn't do anything against them; but perhaps it could find a way to deal with the Ambassador from up close.

209845 attempted to make its way down the battlefield without drawing attention, but that idea soon dissolved. It took a look at its surroundings; the antiviruses were all busy with the viruses, and the majority of the sentinels were trying to make their way over to the party. The majority. Not all of them.

209845 was able to squeeze or slam its way through the first couple sentinels that attempted to get in its way, but it soon realized that it didn't have the stamina to take on this many. So it called on the viruses, attuning a new rhythm. It didn't like taking defenders away from the party, but dealing with the Ambassador was more important. And Jidah could fend for herself. Pulsing to the voices of the very beings it was born to destroy, it raised its arm and pointed. And the viruses came. Like a flood, they began to abandon their previous targets and tear a path down the tunnel, clearing space for 209845 to continue its march.

...

The Ambassador extended its tendrils, and it Saw. It was gifted with a unique ability no other Cloud member had; the ability to drill into the minds of others, and the cognitive capacities to control them. The Ambassador felt pleasure as it identified its first target; a triple of beings standing together near the mouth of the virus chamber. Individual minds, they united to create a single force. Chaos. Delicious.

With a driving hunger, the Ambassador drove its tendrils straight into the minds of the tri-being. Inside, it was met with vastness. Perfect. It injected a sliver of compliance, just barely enough to get the job done but go unnoticed, and began to probe the depths of these minds.

"GREETINGS," it projected. "OH MIGHTY ONE. ON BEHALF OF THE CLOUD, I EXTEND MY SINCEREST APOLOGIES FOR THIS SITUATION."

@SpiritOfWrath

As Jidah, Lati, and Calix conversed, with Réva standing by, groups of Cloud sentinels attempted to approach them. The sentinels each had jellyfish-like bodies, but made of the same void-like substance as 209845, and their tentacles glitched in and out of existence. In the chaos of the battle, the sentinels kept being knocked down by vicious viruses, that seemed to instinctually protect the party.

Then the viruses left, rallying to 209845's call.

And the party was left undefended.

The sentinels swooped in like a flock of vultures, circling the four beings. One by one, they began to lash out, testing the waters.

Lati stayed hidden.

Other mes. Blah blah blah complicated stuff. Quite fascinating really.

"Danke." Elan says, looking at the glowing armor fascinatedly.

"That's a yes, TMI. Sorry."

"It's fine . . ."

". . . 'Cus everyone's fighting . . ." she said even quieter.

"I don't like it when everyone's fighting . . ."

"Neither do I. It's... not very fun."

Elan leans back as much as he can. "There's a place I know where it's like that, but it isn't all it sounds like it'll be."

. . . Oh.

He kinda sounded disappointed- had she said something wrong?

". . . Is that a bad thing?" she asked timidly.

"In a lot of ways, yeah."

Because then they wouldn't have them either, and they wouldn't be able to use them.

Sucks to be them, then.

Jidah wished that too. But… not exactly.

". . . Okay. That makes sense."

Even though it didn't.

She didn't really like making gods angry. It didn't go very well- and she'd already angered a few today . . .

You haven’t angered ME.

She winced.

"But I did . . ."

No! No, you didn’t. Even if you did, I don’t care. I like you.

She paused in the last split-second of sanity before she made an impossible promise.

I’m gonna give you a hug someday.

"You- you do? And . . . you will?"

She still didn't know what a hug was, actually . . .

Oh, well, she'd figure it out probably.

I do. I like you more than most mortals.

Jidah summoned a silhouette of light and gently wrapped her arms around it. This is a hug.

She let go as soon as possible and watched the silhouette dissolve into air.

It couldn’t have been that long, she thought to herself.

So why had it felt so unfamiliar?

. . . Ohhhhhhhhhhh. That's right . . . she remembered now.

Something . . . something from a long time ago . . .

Hmph. Weird.

"Hehe. Thanks . . . I like you better than most gods, too," she giggled quietly.
