"Uh . . . yeah . . . that's okay though. You've been a lot nicer since you got mortal!"

“You didn’t like me before?” She whispered. “But… I was good before. I was perfect.”

The fox giggles in its sleep at that.

She would have cried if she knew.

She knows, deep down, someone is laughing at her.

". . . You were kinda mean. You're nice now."

“I wasn’t mean! I’m not mean.”

They looked around for an indication of where the ones they had met might be going.

As they searched, they were able to find what appeared to be tracks of many creatures heading in both directions. With the mass of prints, it was impossible to know where the specific pair that had fled had gone.

She stood beneath it and watched them.

209845 walked up until it was standing right next to her, then hesitated. It tooled what passed for a deep breath, then spoke.

”I’m… sorry about what happened earlier.” Were those the right words to say? Human interaction wasn’t exactly covered by the Cloud handbook. It passed for a moment, considering stopping there, but then continued. It had to do this. “I lost control, and I wasn’t able to keep you safe. This whole time, I’ve been trying to keep control,  and maybe I’ve come off as harsh or unapologetic.” It paused again. “So I’m sorry. I’ve only been thinking about myself, when you guys represent the world I’m only now coming to discover. Honestly, I have a lot to learn from you.” There. It was said. And somehow, the string that had been pulling at 209845’s heart loosened just a little.

"O-okay."

She thought for a moment.

"Um . . . do you- do you have any friends?"

“Friends?”

Just now, BlueWildRye said:

"Immortals have no friends," Sigismund says simply. "Not even other immortals, at least most of the time."

She nodded agreement. “F- friends are for m- mortals.” She hiccuped, then began sobbing again.

She would have glared at him if she could have.

". . . Well . . . you're a mortal now . . . and I've never had friends before, I think. You can be my friend, if you want."

"Well, guess we can't be friends then, at least for the time being. I mean, who knows---you could regain your immorality... No matter how unlikely that sounds..."

For a moment, the only sounds were her sorry sniffles.

“Really? But you think I’m mean…”

-
“I will. I’m gonna do it!” She snapped with a sudden ferocity.

With a sigh, they sat down and put their head between their hands, first setting the sword down next to them with a soft clunk. Occasionally they looked up to glance between the two hallways exiting the room, as though searching for motion.

This seemed to be the right thing to say. Réva relaxed a little.

Réva sat next to them. She would have rubbed their back, but didn’t think they would like that.

They glanced over at her, then looked away. "I should go back. They must be looking for me by now."

She wasn’t going to get anywhere with this. “Fine. But if you go back I go with you.”

They frowned. "I don't think the Makers would like that. Anyway, why would you come with me?"

“To make sure nothing bad happens to you. I need to have a few words with these ‘Makers’ myself.”
