Not sure if there’s already a thread for this, but thought I’d make this. If I missed anything obvious in the poll, I should be able to add it.

I know this is a hot take, but consider: the scene where Kaladin sees Szeth crying over the toy sheep.

There’s a disconnect between what the reader knows and what Kaladin knows. We’ve read enough of Szeth’s backstory to understand what this toy sheep means, and why he’s breaking down over it. We’re rooting for Szeth to have the emotional breakthrough he’s been suppressing for so long because he doesn’t feel he deserves it. We know Szeth needs Kaladin’s help. But Kaladin is at a complete loss, because he isn’t dealing with somebody like himself. He doesn’t understand who he is dealing with.

But then the stars align, and Kaladin finds a way to relate Szeth’s experiences to his own. He asks pertinent questions, and gets important answers. Suddenly, he has a framework to understand Szeth’s perspective, the empathy kicks into gear, and the two of them can finally have a meaningful exchange about the deep problems Szeth has been struggling with his whole life. Szeth, for the first time since early childhood, honestly entertains the notion that he deserves to be happy.

Of course, there are no quick and easy solutions, and Szeth still has a long way to go. But the experience is a critical revelation for both Szeth and Kaladin. And that hug is cathartic.

Also my favorite scene, as well as being the only part of the book to make me cry. I do find it pretty funny though that Kaladin still has to see things in terms of Tiens in order to empathize with people he doesn't like.

An probably underrated one that stuck to me was Dami The Stormwall entrance to the battle of the shattered plains.

So happy to see a purely positive post here about WaT. :) Loved many of the scenes. Especially Kaladin becoming a herald in a way that still fit thematically with his whole series character arc!

This was also, by far, my favorite moment in the book (the close second is Adolin's armor spren yelling "Sir!").

My favorite moment from Words of Radiance is when Kaladin realizes "Elhokar was Dalinar's Tien." So the inversion of that moment was especially effective on me:

Quote

Szeth wasn't so much as Kaladin as...

"Szeth," Kaladin said. "How old were you when they took you from your home?"

"Eleven," Szeth whispered, hoarse. "I was eleven."

Szeth wasn't Kaladin. He was Tien.

Tears.

Quote

"What do you want?"

Szeth gazed at Kaladin's open, extended hand. The man was trembling and Kaladin couldn't tell what of the wetness on his face was rain, sweat, and what was tears.

"I want..." Szeth said. "I want to stop killing. I want to be done with it. I want to cause no more pain."

Lots of tears.

I'm usually a bigger fan of print than the audiobooks, but I can't stress enough how much Michael Kramer's performance of this chapter truly elevates it. The emotion is just so intense. And I can't wait until the Graphic Audio releases: Robbie Gay's Kaladin and Bradley Foster Smith's Szeth are phenomenal.

I love all the scenes people brought up. I also liked the Rysn patent and dawnshard scene for some reason.

I voted for Taln waking up, specifically for the moment when Adolin & co find Taln and Ash together, but probably my favourite 'moment' is a bit of a meta pick because rather than being a specific scene it is the moment I turned the page and saw an entire page of small caps that started with 'I, ɢoᴅ...'

I genuinely slammed the book shut and had to get up and go for a walk until I was calm enough to continue 😅

I think another really awesome scene was Adolin's rescue of the Azish shardbearer, literally storming through the enemies and using a corpse as a weapon. It was insanely brutal, but it reminded me a bit of some of the Dalinar flashbacks in OB, and just how dangerous someone with plate really is.

When Dalinar renounced his oaths. It was so perfect that it vaporized my brain, especially when it dawned on me what that meant was about to happen.

Honestly my favorite scene might have been one of the opening scenes, when Kaladin is just spending time with his family in Urithiru before he leaves. To see our normally depressed melodramatic character making light hearted banter with his family... I read it with a smile on my face throughout the entire scene.

Dalinar getting to see Evi again and "save" her had me crying on a plane. He got  the opportunity to stand on his worst day and say to himself and Odium he would have done everything differently.

Sigzil saving Vienta. I absolutely understand why she reacted the way she did in the end, but the moment was incredible.

Also, bonus moment was Lopen showing up to save him with all his cousins.
