tom was sailing. The expression for his speed can be expressed as the polynomial 2x³+x²+x-2=0. Tim is sailing. His speed can be expressed as the polynomial 5x⁵+2x³+5x-1/x = 0. Who is faster? Explain.

The homework casts a spell:

Solve by hand under the domain of all real numbers: cos 2x = 2 cos x

Ooh ooh ooh! Yo se(’)! π/2,

and other values like it.

Tom’s speed is actually 2x^3 - x^2 + 2x  - 1 = 0 for convenience

In other words, his speed is actually 1/2

Tim’s speed is actually 5x^5 - x^3 +5x - 1/x = 0 for convenience.

In other words, his speed  is x^3(5x^2 - 1) + (1/x)(5x^2 - 1) = 0

In other other words, his speed is the reciprocal of root 5

Since 5 is greater than 2^2, Tom is going faster.

Then Glass realizes she's yet to do her Calc. homework.

*distant cries of 'noooooo'*

"Glass! Why! Why have you fallen so low! In order to restore your honor, you must pass three trials that test your bravery and courage."

Glass sighs. "I've already done all that."

"Well do it again, so we can televise it!" calls out Storm from the other end of the megaphone.

"Wait, where'd the megaphone come from?"

"I always have it on me, in case something like this happens. Now stop stalling and hop to it!" commands Storm.
