The Burnt Man faltered. "No... they are no longer on the wind. Once that might have worked... but no longer."

"I'd bet one of those spirits once on the wind taught her." The Burnt Man snickered.

A blueprint... but that carries an incorrect connotation. It implies the Archstone is a creation of Intellect, when it is really of Madness. It is what she used to bind the world to reality; it was the source of most her power before she agreed to bind herself away from the world. She was curious, you see, what would happen should she abandon this world. But doing this also removed her influence upon us, allowing us agency. But... she did not like what happened with her withdrawal... and the Servants are a result of that. Manipulating the proximity of threads of the Archstone, pulling on them, to bend reality. Intellect would have a better explanation.

It is... Never mind. That is not relevant. Only Madness or her Servants can use it to its fullest power... its design is too complex. Intellect has studied it since Madness was bound, but to no avail.

Really..

Cole hunches a bit, as if hiding, but continues. “I was a ship carpenter, once.  A fire on the ship killed many of my friends and destroyed the cargo, ruining the captain. I left, and I haven’t been at sea since, because land carpentry doesn’t ruin lives if you fail it.”

“Interesting. Are the other spirits the other spirits?”

“I… suppose so..”

“They sound unpleasant and self righteous. Freedom is important. Perhaps we could reason with them.”

Wow.

The Burnt Man frowned grimly. "Don't you think I've tried that? And what has that earned me? The title of Madness, of all things. Chaos, I might except, but Madness is just an insult."

Cole shakes off the painful memories. “What did you do before this ‘quest’ thing?”

“Yes, chaos can be useful sometimes. The universe never would have been created. I think freedom is closer, perhaps. That is what I feel.”

"Yes. I like freedom as well. Freedom of reality."

“Yes. For instance, magic doesn’t exist, but I can do it. If I’m free [read: insane] enough, I can make anything reality.”

“I don’t know. But I know I’m not one.”

“Yeah, I haven’t been particularly religious. Do we even know what religion we’re supposedly heretics to?”

She shook her head.

The Burnt Man grinned, and reality distorted around Cole. "You understand, then."

“I think so.” Cole attempts to think himself a pie.

@SpiritOfWrath

The server brings a plate to her table, as well as a glass.

Hehehe

In front of him, a gigantic pie appeared. From any other observer, though, nothing was there.

“Thank you.” She made herself eat slowly, so it didn’t harm her.

Retlen stares to the distance. A town was just barely visible. They had decided to go around the town, making camp to the side.

Cole eats his imaginary pie, savoring the imaginary taste. Once in his room, he tries to arrange his tent-cloak in a way that would let him fly better.
