Okay, here's a follow up for you. I'm not entirely sure if this is the place to discuss this, so feel free to suggest a better forum for this topic if there is one.

It seems like there's something strange going on with the way the metals work Hemalurgically (obviously there's a lot of information we don't have at this time, which complicates things). Here's what I've been looking at:

For basic metals, all the Pulling metals steal human attributes and all the Pushing metals steal the Allomantic/Feruchemical powers of that quadrant (e.g. Physical metal steals Physical Allomancy/Feruchemy while the other basic metals steal Mental Allomancy/Cognitive Feruchemy). Now, what got me started looking at this was that gold also steals Physical Feruchemy, and I thought it was weird that Physical Feruchemy would be doubled up. After a bit of research (read: I looked at the sources on The Coppermind), I found this WoB:

Are the usual quadrants (Physical, Mental, Temporal, Enhancement) preserved in Feruchemy and Hemalurgy?

BRANDON SANDERSON.

No. In Ferchemy, it is based Realmatically. There is a quadrant of Spiritual, a quadrant of Cognitive and two quadrants of Physical.

So that's easily reconciled by saying that gold steals only the second quadrant of Physical Feruchemy (referred to as the Hybrid Quadrant on the wiki page), which comprises gold, electrum, cadmium, and bendalloy. All good here, right?

Not quite. I found the answer to one question, but came up with a few more in the process. Gold steals the other quadrant of Physical Feruchemy; great. But gold is a pulling metal, whereas all the basic metals that stole Metallic Arts were pushing metals. Same thing for Aluminum: pulling metal, but it steals Enhancement Allomancy. I had managed to convince myself that the information about Hemalurgic Gold came from the RPG, so it may not have been correct. But the information about Hemalurgic Aluminum comes from Hero of Ages! So the pattern of pushing metals stealing Metallic Arts may not hold for higher metals.

I'll cut to my point here. It really seems to me like the table of Hemalurgic attributes doesn't make a lot of sense. There is a pattern to the way that it works for the basic metals, but not only does that pattern not hold for the higher metals, there doesn't seem to be any kind of pattern at all. I don't know how much I believe the listings for Gold and Duralumin, but the attribute for Aluminum I can't dispute. What it seems like it should be, to me, is that the pattern is switched for higher metals and the attribute for Duralumin is just wrong. It seems to me that they should read like the following:

Gold - Steals Physical (II) Feruchemy

Aluminum - Steals Enhancement Allomancy

Extrapolating from this, I would guess that we also have:

Cadmium - Steals Temporal Allomancy

Chromium - Steals Spiritual Feruchemy

Then the other four higher metals steal human attributes.

Is this something that has been discussed before? Any relevant Words of Brandon that I've missed? I'm relatively new to the forums here, so it feels more than likely that this has already been answered somewhere. I checked my books once I got home tonight, but there hasn't been an updated list of Hemalurgic abilities including the metals discovered since Hero of Ages.

Thoughts?

There is a topic in Mistborn sub-forum about, we had no real answer but i think that you may find it quite fascinating, Oudeis made a great job with the know informations http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/38919-charting-hemalurgy/

So is the black gem that ole gavalar gives zeth the largest shard of honor left. Did syl help set up the events that allowed for tien to die because when she tells Saladin she's helped kill before she quickly tells him she doesn't want to talk about it, also in a vision from the dying it explains seeing a boy holding a dead person warping covered in blood is this syl watching?

We have no idea what the black gem was, but it seems unlikely to have been the largest splinter of Honor. (It's still possible, just not very likely compared to other theories.) A popular theory on the formus seems to be that it's the equivalent of a gem infused with Stormlight, except of Cultivation or Odium. Its description kind of implies 'evil', which kind of implies Odium, but that's a tenuous connection. We really have no idea what it is.

As for your second question, that's not really a question. It's more of a theory. It's an interesting theory, but we have no idea if it's true or not.

I'm not entirely sure this is directly on-topic but I don't want to make a thread just for this one question or know of a better place to ask but would anyone by chance know when new book release artwork is uploaded on Brandon's site? I like to save the images because I enjoy the art (and the Cosmere-relation helps too--pictures of symbols and such are interesting). I've just no idea when they are typically updated, if it follows a consistent schedule at all.

Good question... I have no idea.

In the meantime, if I store a memory in a coppermind, melt the coppermind, and then reforge it, is the charge retained? I was sure we had an answer around here somewhere, but I can't find it.

I believe we have confirmation that the Feruchemical Charge remains, but I recall several discussions about if the memories would remain "whole" or if the melting would jumble them around.

When I ordered my signed copy of SoS, I asked the question "Does the pushing and/or pulling of metals have anything to do with the Electromagnetic Force?"

Brandon's answer: No (not really...but kinda)

Could a Shardblade even clash with Nightblood? Wouldn't the Shardblade be instantly vaporized from existence?

To me no.

Probably a clash with Nightblood would be similar to a Honorblade's one. The Shardblade may "broke" and you need to reform it.

We know that Nightblood may kill a Spren but I don't think that he may do while the spren is in a Shardblade form (too many concentrate Investiture).

One more question: Why didn't Hoid use an alias in Warbreaker?

Well Hoid as far as we know usually uses its own name.

In Elantris, Mistborn, Warbreaker there are people that know him as Hoid. In Roshar no, but probably because he know to be followed.

I realize this is several pages back, but Wayne would be so disappointed that no one brought this up. There really is no discrepancy or inconsistency to "Taln" being described as having no accent and a Northern accent since the first refers to having, or rather not having, a foreign accent, ie, he is a native speaker, while the other refers to a specific regional accent, because in no language does every single speaker talk the same way.

Now for a question I've got. Who was the aged and kindly voice that told Vin to go ahead and release the power instead of using it, or at least implied that she should? Was it Leras, or another of Ruin's deceptions?

Posted

I don't think Leras would intentionally spark armageddon, that's not very Preservation-y. He'd at most bait Ruin into doing it for him, since the grand master plan kinda needed the world to end.

Plus Harmony implies it's kinda difficult to talk to people using Preservation.

Some Questions:
1) Someone can tell me, how many time Ati was free during the Mistborn Trilogy ?
2) We had a precise count of the 11 Inquisitor's Spike gived at the newform Inquisitor during the Final Empire ?

3) Susebron may be close to be considerated a Sliver ?

1) Someone can tell me, how many time Ati was free during the Mistborn Trilogy ?

Not quite sure what you mean here, because the freeing of Ati happened in WoA, and we've never seen him become imprisoned again afterwards. Do you mean how long did Ati roam around free before Vin killed him? According to this, it was about a year.

2) We had a precise count of the 11 Inquisitor's Spike gived at the newform Inquisitor during the Final Empire ?

I don't think so. In fact, given that Marsh obtained his atium spike from another Inquisitor, it appears they didn't all have the same kind of spikes.

3) Susebron may be close to be considerated a Sliver ?

Maybe, but he might have to give up his many Breaths to be considered one, because a Sliver (as per this) is someone who has already released the immense Investiture he once had.

I assume this had been answered already, but if not I'll mirror it over on the question file thread - In Warbreaker, why exactly is Mab of all people spreading the unholy altars rumor? She was there, during her formative years, there should have been no evidence anywhere of Iridescent Tone priests doing human sacrifice.

Yes I was talking about the time between his release and his dead.

About Susebron I had the impression that someone may became a Sliver without lost his power. My interpretation is that "if you had more than X Investiture you became a Sliver and also if you lost this great Amount of Investiture. Something is deeply change within you". Because I read a Wob about "bein a Lerasium Mistborn don't make you a Sliver but put you very near"

Did odium create the voidbringers? There is no mention of them on other shardworlds, and they seem designed to fight Honor, so where did they come from?

You've read Words of Radiance, right? Otherwise this subforum is full of spoilers.

The voidspren that bond the Parshendi to form Voidbringers are Splinters of Odium. The Parshendi themselves weren't created by Odium; they just have the ability to bond spren in a more straightforward manner than how humans bond spren, and Odium exploited this ability to create his own army on Roshar.

Thanks for the reply. I have one more question, if the Parshendi weren't created by Odium, they probably evolved on Roshar naturally, along with all of the crab-like wildlife. If that is true, would that imply that Roshar is the oldest planet in the cosmere, because it has the most unique and advanced evolutionary chain.

Posted (edited)

Roshar is spoken of in the Letters in WoR to be a world that "bears the touch and design of Adonalsium". So it'd say it is rather old. It would explain the utter dependence of the animal populations on spren at least. Humans would be the aliens in this setup.

I mean, of course there are probably older planets out there, most of the worlds (potentially barring Scadrial) presumably existed before the shards arrived, and minor shardworlds without shards and having their own wildlife abound. You really can't say. We're talking a whole galaxy's worth of planets here.

I suspect Yolen is supposed to be the most senior of the worlds in the dwarf galaxy we know as the Cosmere.  (I also suspect that it is no more, but we won't find that out until Dragonsteel at the earliest)  Roshar is definitely an artificial world, though: its landmass bears a suspicious resemblance to a mathematical function (a function whose shape would exist regardless of number system, no less), and its 3 moons orbit the planet far too regularly, for it to be anything remotely related to fault lines or any natural system, such as we see on Earth.  The other shardworlds display this sort of irregularity as well - The mountain range encircling the Elendel Basin on Scadrial is clearly unnatural, as is the geography of Hallandren on Nalthis in general (Seriously, take a good look at the geography surrounding Hallandren and its backstory.  There's odd stuff all over)
