Jenny let her daggers drop, but she didn’t put them away. She got up from the bed, grimacing at the pain shooting up through her leg. It was sweet that Edgar stood between her and Roy, but in his state she didn’t think there was much he could do.

”I’ll handle him.”

She whispered to Edgar as she passed him.

“Not alone you won’t. I’ll be with you.” He could tell she was hurting, if Roy attacked she probably wouldn’t stand a chance. His Gift became a shield, a defensive weapon. He wouldn’t attack first, but he would be ready.

Jenny, while not entirely sure that she believed Roy, nodded. The sooner they got away from Roy the better, and that apparently necessitated talking to Chiron. She waited for Edgar to move, not wanting to leave his side while he was doing so poorly.

Jenny almost said ‘no problem’, but realized that was a blatant lie.

She whispered back. Jenny was relatively certain that Edgar would just collapse if she tried to lean on him. She appreciated the gesture, though.

Jenny smiled at Edgar. Fortunately he didn’t try to argue with her about this. He kept trying to help her, even though that would only hurt him. She hadn’t met someone so kind to her for years. 

She watched Roy, not moving until he did. There was no way she was going to turn her back to him. He’d probably try to stab her from behind.

He smiled back. He wished she’d let him help her somehow. She’d helped him so much, and he wanted to pay it back. But more than that, she was his friend. He wanted her to be in less pain.

Jenny paled. Oh no. This was very bad. They’d probably think this was all her fault. She was a child of Hades. Who else would do his bidding? But it didn’t make sense. Why would Hades want the bolt? He didn’t want war, did he?

”My dad wouldn’t do that. He wouldn’t take the bolt, I swear! He… he… oh gosh…”

She sat down and put her head in her hands. Everyone probably thought that she was the thief. The other campers would hate her even more. It was a wonder Chiron didn’t seem to be angry at her.

Edgar dropped to the ground next to her, a little harder than he meant to, his right leg giving out halfway down. Very, very hesitantly, he put a friendly  arm around her shoulders. He didn’t usually comfort people, but this was a good way, right?
