Joe ST he/him Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 Sorry Eri, Eric is Chaos's real-world alias
Kurkistan he/him Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 Sorry, but who is Eric? Sorry Eri, Eric is Chaos's real-world alias Yeah, it get's confusing when Eric posts in the same thread as people warning newcomers about Eric spiking them.
Eri she/her Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 Oh, right. Sorry again. I somehow missed that. I was thinking about that one stalking guy and wasn't sure if his name was Eric or not, or do you meen some other character, and didn't realize you're talking about a real person. Eric, Edward... sounds similar I guess. (Sorry, Chaos!)

spacemonkey he/him Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 From each series, my favorite characters are: Elantris: Hrathen. His personal struggles were one of the most engaging parts of the book. Mistborn: Sazed. I like scholarly, intellectual characters. Warbreaker: Vivenna. Her growth as a character, and the contrast between her early chapters and the later ones, was very interesting to read. Alloy of Law: Wayne. He's probably the snarkiest character Brandon's written so far, and that's saying something. Way of Kings: Jasnah. For the same reasons as Sazed, plus it's rare for a religious author to write an athiest with such obvious moral integrity and depth of character, and I was very pleased to see it. 2
CrazyRioter she/her Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 I agree with you about Jasnah, I'm an atheist myself and I was really impressed with how well Brandon did writing an atheist character, that's' something that a lot of religious authors have problems with. Atheist characters in fiction often end up as a cartoonish villain or they end up being "saved" by the most basic arguments, as if they'd never heard them before and didn't know anything about religion until the main character showed up. Sorry, pet peeve. 2
Commander Spoonface he/him Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 Jasnah doesn't set fire to people. She just stares them down until they become fire. If she reads in a similar way, that makes her the Chuck Norris of Roshar. 3

Rayonn Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 My favorite cosmere character is Marsh. Several reasons: - Characters who have to fight their own psychology or other corrupting influences are interesting to me for some reason. (Peter Wiggin is my favorite character in the Ender's Game cycle, and I loved the John Wayne Cleaver books by Dan Wells). - With nothing but cleverness, strength of will, and a bit of luck, he manages to screw up Ruin's plans (even though Ruin was using him as his chief pawn) and plays as big of a part in saving the world as anyone but Sazed. And nobody even knows (except Sazed, apparently). - And then he shows up at the end of Alloy of Law as Hemalurgic Batman. And mentions that he and Scadrial's god don't always see eye to eye. This scene (and similar ones for Sazed, TenSoon, and even Vin and Spook) was worth reading the book for even if the story itself hadn't been any good. (One thing Alloy of Law era Scadrial has in common with the Discworld: an awesome personification of Death) On an unrelated note: He is funny He can alter time He can rapidly heal himself He is a kleptomaniac He refuses to use guns He is a master of disguise He likes girls who can beat him up and he has a lucky hat Funny how many of these are also true of the Doctor... 3
Commander Spoonface he/him Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 Funny how many of these are also true of the Doctor... If Wayne ever wears something fez-like, I shall consider that theory confirmed.

Commander Spoonface he/him Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 Marsh: I need to become more than just a man. Kelsier: By becoming a symbol instead? Yeah, been there, done that. Marsh: No. By nailing spikes into my body until I become a freaking MISTBORN SUPERSOLDIER, that's how. Kelsier: I held Preservation's pow- Marsh: I'M BATMAN. 5
Joe ST he/him Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 did any of the other characters loose their parents in a trapeze shootup? we need a Robin
Kurkistan he/him Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 (edited) did any of the other characters loose their parents in a trapeze shootup? we need a Robin Well, Spook's parents abandoned him/his father-figure was killed, and he does have some crazy acrobatics going on in HoA... Alliare she/her Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 Hahaha, oh man, you confused Eric for that dude from twilight? EPIC I want that in glittering colors in Eric's window! *-* About Kaladin... I guess we meet a 'already betrayed' Kaladin, him before they killed everyone and sold him as a slave; before he lost his little brother, before what happened in that battle. I think... I like the glimpses of the less-mature Kaladin more, the Kaladin who has lived less, who is still innocent, who cares. The Kaladin his men describe. Everyone has to grow in such terrible conditions, but... if I were granted a wish, I would have spared Kaladin squadleader all of what came after. Maybe it would not have been good for the story. Maybe he wouldn't have been such a complex character and all his levels in badassery, but... he would be more... I would like him more as a person, I don't know.
Commander Spoonface he/him Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Well, Spook's parents abandoned him/his father-figure was killed, and he does have some crazy acrobatics going on in HoA... He did become a Mistborn, eventually. I like the idea of Mistborn Spook and Marsh running around stopping crime in the newly remade world.
SCAL37 Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 I like the idea of Mistborn Spook and Marsh running around stopping crime in the newly remade world. I sincerely hope that that happens in one of the Alloy of Law sequels, even if we only see it in TWoK-style interludes.
Commander Spoonface he/him Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 I sincerely hope that that happens in one of the Alloy of Law sequels, even if we only see it in TWoK-style interludes. Or in the broadsheets! "IRONEYES IN BLACK CLOAK AND LORD MISTBORN SPOTTED TOGETHER"
dhalagirl she/her Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Well, if someone could pass that message on to Ben I bet it could happen.
Zas678 he/him Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Or in the broadsheets! "IRONEYES IN BLACK CLOAK AND LORD MISTBORN SPOTTED TOGETHER" Like this? "I have seen God, lawkeeper," Tan whispered. Where was he? "I have seen Death himself, with the nails in his eyes. I have seen the Survivor, who is life."
Commander Spoonface he/him Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Like this? That's Marsh and Kelsier though, not Marsh and Spook. I always wondered about the significance of Tan's statement. Is he just drawing on Scadrial's culture for his insane ideas, or has he actually encountered Marsh and/or Kelsier?
Ironeyes Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 It's interesting to note how opposite Marsh and Kelsier became. Kelsier held Preservation's power, Marsh became one of Ruin's minions. Marsh joined the Ministry, Kelsier destroyed it. Kelsier died young, Marsh will presumably live forever. Marsh is described in that quote as Death, Kelsier as Life. Did Brandon do that on purpose?

If you read Elantris, it's in basically ever page at least once, if you look for it. Also, Jasnah is indeed Chuck Norris. 1
Khestra Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 Vivenna disagrees. I agree that Kaladin, despite his deep backstory and awesomeness, isn't that intriguing of a character. He's a lot more intriguing for what he does than for who he is. He's mostly just obsessed with hating Lighteyes. Dalinar, however, is badassery incarnate. Retired warlord trying to learn ancient magical religions so he can effing UNITE people, even though they all think he's crazy. Guess how many craps Dalinar gives? ZERO. The Blackthorne could take any of his haters ezpz any day of the week except during a Highstorm, when he's too busy having AWESOME PROPHETIC VISIONS and chatting with the Almighty. Oh, people say he's only hardcore when he's wielding a shardblade? Np, he'll just trade one for some slaves, and while he's at it, give some plate to his handicapped son ('cause you know that awesomeness runs in the fam). He'll just go pick up another pair from the lifeless bodies of his enemies. Speaking of enemies, even THEY'RE forced to acknowledge his uber sweetness (see: giant Parshendi shardbearer). King sends him on a wild goose chase? The Blackthorne slams him against the wall and makes him piss his pants. Did I mention that he made a pact with the Old God? So between all this badassery, what does he do for a break? Nothing -- he just cuts giant rocks with his sword and lifts the chunks out with his own hands. Oh, and in his spare time, he has a train of chicks coming to his tent all day to read ancient scripture to him, so he can live by an ancient moral code that nobody else believes in. Dalinar is a Sliver of the Awesomeness Shard. I completely agree, and must re-quote this for it's awesome truth. I thought picking my fav Sanderson character would be hard, until I remembered the Chasemfiend hunt scene. When Dalinar caught the Chasemfiend's claw to save his nephew, I actually jumped out of my seat involuntarily and pumped a fist in celebration. Dalinar is badass-ery incarnate, and the best part is that he's humble and confident about that fact at the same time. I could gush on and on, but I really think the 'shopped Dos Equis pic says it all. Second fav, however, is a hard pick. Sanderson has done a good job at making characters at once endearing and yet flawed enough to keep them from being 100% bubbly and likable. Except for Syl. She's just 100% cute. I sort of have my favs from each book, but I suppose if I had to pick just ONE character to have by my side as rust goes down, it would be Sazed, pre-Harmony. Says a lot that he doesn't even need to be in god-form yet for me to pick him as my fav. His flaws become his redemption in a gradual un-forced way, and when he finally became Harmony, it felt right. Close (and I mean CLOSE) third, is Ten-Soon. Nothing chilled me more than when he told the Firsts how blind they were being, and the Seconds what idiots they were. When he pulled his Blessings free, I was proud of his certainty and marveled at his strength. Nothing like being taught the lesson of humanity by what was essentially a pile of primordial goo.
