"Well... thanks, I guess? But please dispose of the corpse in our heavy duty waste bins out back. I don't want another candy cream incident."

"Hrm? Hello?" Fadran turned around. "Oh hi."

"Hey," Rayvyn said. "We're back, and we brought the kid's brother. Did Klave take care of the body?"

"Very well. I will refrain from asking for details about that incident, I think." Klave moved off towards the back, corpse in tow.

The brother carried Tacien, who was still sobbing into his shirt. "So, I was thinking. We may need to stay here. Apparently, our home isn't safe. There are... some people after my brother.

"That's what's going on?" Fadran pinched the bridge of his nose. What a day. He let out a breath, then looked up again and gave them a small - but heartfelt - smile. "You can absolutely stay here. I recently redid a lot of the defenses, so this place is a lot safer than probably a lot of fortresses."

"Good. And one more question... Why did you let a six-year-old into your inn with no supervision? I heard that there was a lot of potentially dangerous stuff going on."

Nath hears the voices upon the wind. He senses the danger unspoken and sends his voice to Fadran alone.

"Perhaps we should see to your defenses. If forces are bold enough to attempt an attack here then they should be made to realize that unwelcome guests to this mindscape will not be tolerated."

"So then, why should I be keeping my brother here instead of just at home, if either place is risky?"

"That's what I've heard," Rayvyn muttered under her breath. "Great! I already have a room, and so does the kid--who's name turns out to be Tacien--so I assume the brother will stay there with him. Speaking of which, what's your name? You never said. And I haven't seen anything too dangerous here."

"My name is Cufre. Where's his room?"

Tacien, for some reason, seemed to be growing even more upset as time went on.

My guy, I've been working for three months making sure nothing like the Beorin incident happens again. None of the threats here are actually threatening.

"Because you said you'd rather stay here?" Fadran patted the little lad on the head. "Listen. Nothing here is evil. The conditions for entry select against those with premeditated or otherwise detectable levels of malice and hatred. That doesn't technically stop things like ancient drifters and eldritch horrors from coming in, but as long as we keep them nice and cozy downstairs - don't bother them or anything - then they aren't likely to wake from their eternal slumber."

Bookwyrm walked up to the group before realizing that an important conversation was happening. He slowed down and stopped, listening.

Astyl, who was relatively small for a dragon, stood at his side, the colored blue and white lines running across him glowing softly against his black scales. Perideria remained in Bookwyrm's room.

Upon hearing of a "downstairs", though, he intervened:

"What exactly do you keep down there? What kind of drifters and horrors?"

"They're creatures from like... half-baked universes. I dunno if there's a capital G "God" out there in charge of the Macrosmos, but if there is then these things probably come from his fever dreams."

"You only get to be my age by taking every precaution. I would say that we should be setting the halls of this place to confuse anyone who enters without and invitation and proceed from there."

There's no such thing as an invitation to this place. I designed it that way to bring friends and allies from afar. You were with me for all that testing, weren't you? You know just as well as I that it'd take a force beyond even yours to actually penetrate my barriers.

"How can I trust that? I don't know who you are, or what this place is. The only thing I know is that Tacien chose to come here and he probably knows about it. But he's still a kid who doesn't necessarily know what's best for him."

“Don’t worry,” Rayvyn says quietly. “I’ll protect your brother as long as I am here.” A voice in her head whispers, and if he’s the one you were sent to kill? But she shoves it down.

Klave walked past him, dusting off his cloak. "Oh, hello there. Who are you?"

"You too! Why are all of you so interested in my brother?"

Rayvyn shrugs. “He looked like he needed help, and I had no reason not to help him. Besides, we all see a bit of ourselves in the young ones, don’t we? And do we not all wish that we can help them as no one helped us?”

"All true enough I suppose. Though you know that as powerful as I am there are others who possess more power than I."

He raised an eyebrow at her. "No. Not everyone wishes that. Some people grow up in stable families with loving parents." He began making his way to the room. "If you'll excuse me."
