I won’t say messing with other peoples’ souls is technically impossible for a death demigod but it would be

a) REALLY hard

B) almost definitely get you kicked out of the Reaper Corps

Between them all, the wyvern seemed to really have its claws full.

One of the first things they’d all learned in advanced combat training was how to recover on their feet. Against the likes of the monsters at the bottom of this mountain, it was simple enough to make a tactical retreat to catch their breath before charging back in - but if those were the only kinds of monsters seeking the souls of the dead on their path to the Gates, then there wouldn’t be any need for the Reapers in the first place.

Kaeni dodged between a pair of strikes and weaved into another opening, flame once again flashing into her dagger for her to slash through the fur and hide. From there it was back to leaping and dashing around and about each attack; narrowly avoiding the uncannily quick claw strikes. Each blur of movement was an entire moment of full concentration, soaking up every ounce of her energy in that instant just to stay alive.

Full focus: the ability to fight a battle consciously. The veterans had hammered it into them over years of training. Instinct was fallible, the senses incomplete. To destroy a being of tremendous power, it took an effort of tremendous skill. One feint was all it would take to kill a Reaper on their guard by fight or flight, so to stay alive a Reaper had to stare each attack dead in the face and decide what it was going to do.

From there it was strength, speed, agility, and foresight. Every one of them had gained that and then some. They’d learned powers beyond anything a common mortal could imagine, and were set on the path to abilities capable of rivaling gods.

And to use that in battle could burn through a mortal body’s essence in minutes.

Burning Veins alone was an ability that would leave Kaeni unconscious the day after for hours, and here she was flaring it beyond the likes of anything they’d done in training. A single instant wasted of its potential was the equivalent of a dozen dead fighting warriors - like a chest of kindling lost to the sea. To face an opponent that fought with any less than the entirety of its potential, a Reaper would have to conserve every idle fraction of an instant to its max.

The body needed energy. Energy came through the blood. Blood became potent through the breath. Thus, to recover, even every breath had to be conscious and controlled.

Kaeni cut through another hint of exposure, sucking in sharply between then and the vicious retaliation - then after that, in the air as she leapt over the claws, heaving out the pent-up air to relieve her lungs. Dropping to her feet and compressing through her knees, she held the strain of each muscle to let Burning Veins’ power circulate through her body, outputting - just for an instant - nearly nothing.

Perfect efficiency.

This fight required nothing less than perfect efficiency.

And so - as it seemed - they all appeared to be winning.

Avi, still glowing with light, watched as her allies brought forth the best of their ability to fight the wyvern.

And something occurred to her.

Death knows what they're doing, she thought. They, somehow, have managed to recruit people with some of the strongest abilities in the system.

Even if those recruits aren't completely aware of their own abilities.

Avi spun into action, summoning constellations of stars to herd the wyvern towards the attacks of the other Acolytes. They came so easily. Whatever power she was being granted by her Starmother, it fed her magic to brimming. Techniques that were normally taxing became simple and easy. She found herself relying on instinct more than normal, applying skills she didn't know she had.

And it seemed to be working.

A sudden, incredible burst of power emenated from the wyvern.

Kaeni panicked. Its claw slammed into her, sending her plummeting through the air. She barely managed to contain her fall, twisting to her side to spare her already significantly damaged spine. Instead she ground against the jagged stone on her arm, screaming as it tore through skin and muscle. As she came to a halt blood began to gush out from the wound: she immediately moved to cauterize it, draining all her energy from it to dull the pain and its resistance to fire. Someone would have to heal it for real later, but for now this would do..

More importantly: what in the hells had that been? It was a power akin to the likes of when she condensed her energy into her knives, but with a hundred times more force packed behind it. She'd sensed it as a buildup of heat coming directly from the heart.

Whatever it was, it most certainly couldn't be good.

Avi watched as a wave of energy burst from the wyvern. In a sudden attack, it threw Kaeni off.

Uh oh.

She winced as Kaeni fell to the ground, tearing her arm open.

Il'anque will heal her. I hope. Avi wasn't sure what was going on with Il'anque anyway.

Worry later. Avi focused her powers on the wyvern, sending bursts of light and energy towards it, trying to distract it.

If I'm lucky, someone else will be able to attack as it's focused on me...

Il'anque dashed at the wyvern, holding her swords in a ready position. She rolled under the wyvern's attack, and countered with a slash of her own, aiming for the wyvern's head. While the wyvern deflected with its antlers, it missed the other sword, which Il'anque scored a glancing blow with. As the wyvern tried to sweep her off balance, Il'anque jumped, ready to strike an-

Wait, what was that?

Il'anque felt the buildup of power a moment too late. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw the monster pin Kaeni under a claw. Il'anque knew instinctively that whatever the wyvern was doing, she wouldn't be able to dodge. In desperation she reached into the earth below her. She found a mote of potential, a seed.

And she commanded it to grow

A oak tree sprung up from the ground, providing Il'anque with cover from the wyvern.

But was it enough?

Il'anque was attacking the wyvern from the front, but then detected the buildup of power a moment too late. She jumped back and grew a tree to try and get cover.

Ran’at felt a wave of heat come off the wyvern.

Uh oh.

He was almost going to hide behind a rock formation when he noticed that Kaeni was indisposed.

I’m about to do what’s called a pro-gamer move.

Ran’at dashed in front of Kaeni and pointed his sword a the wyvern, willing one final burst of Etherium to blast out of the tip.

You can decide if this:

A. Does nothing

B. Rebuffs the energy from the wyvern

C. Kills the wyvern

First you can answer me:

  • What the heck do you mean by "ethereum?"
  • Why would it only do one of those three things?

One: I thought ethereum was the magic in this world. I could replace it with just energy or something

Two: Those are the only things I thought of; It could do something else

...Yeah, sure. Why not?

The beam of energy shattered through the wyvern's weakened field with ease, tearing into its back and slashing through to the bone. A terrible, agonized shriek rolled across the mountainside.

But the heap of energy building from within it didn't stop.

It's going to blow, any second now! Kaeni threw her arms over her face in a crisscross, flaring her energy one final time to guard her entire body. That's got to be the last of the energy... we can finish it after that...

But to do that, we're going to have to survive this.

Mercury lightly dropped infront of Kaeni and the sword laser person.

Grinning she calls over her shoulder, "you need a hand much?"
