Quendi didn’t let her guard down as they left. She really didn’t trust this Wanderer.

They still had a few waking hours left, so as soon as they’d finished setting up camp, Vance started examining the mansion.

The entryroom was absolutely massive, complete with an array of marble columns, shining wooden balconies, glittering chandeliers, and about five gazillion magical wards just waiting for someone to trip them. They were well-hidden, and the aura of magic they gave off was near indistinguishable from that of the rest of the mansion itself—so far he’d basically just been tossing rocks around to trip the most volatile ones and spending minutes at a time trying to detect the others.

“Lesson six,” he continued, cautiously pulling up a rug to look underneath. “This one’s a tad finnicky, so pay attention.”

As the trio rode off, Anikel removed a tiny sliver of the material and handed it to Quendi. "As promised."

Quest was squatting just outside the newly set up camp, scribbling away at his notebook.

The yard surrounding the house was the perfect clearing to camp. Glancing up from his notebook Quest was pleased with where he would be living for the next while. The clearing was filled with a tent holding supplies and personal possessions, several sleeping bags, a firepit, and log for seating. With the rays of sun shifting through the leaves and view out into the forest it was actually very picturesque.

Quest went back to writing. He was just a yard away from the house walls, trying to figure out the language the witch was using. The faint scratching of pencil and songs of birds sounded through the quiet clearing.

The runes were alien to Quest, but he was beginning to see patterns. Given time he could certainly decode the meaning.

With that thought Quest smiled and returned to his research.

Miyako looked around at the ship and saw the ship members struggling to get to ship into storm condition. They slipped around, tying ropes and checking the ship. Most were below deck or tied to the ship but, tides, this was a mess.

Miyako cut through Hyron's vine, slipping her hand out his.

She called back to Hyron and Yerik as she ran across the deck. "Cover me!" She glanced around before setting her sights on a man struggling to tie rope to the mast, hanging on for life.

Finally a challenge. Miyako smiled and leapt into action. As the ship listed to starboard, she slid across the deck, sheathing her sword. Miyako pushing off the deck, leaping towards the mast. She landing on her feet running up a angle before the ship started to swing back around. She leapt up once more and caught onto a beam of wood. She used the momentum to pull herself up to the sailor. Miyako grabbed the startled man before he could fall off and yelled at him, telling him to go down. As he protested Miyako pulled the rope away from him and began expertly tying it to the mast.

Tides, this was fun.

Yerik watched open-mouthed as Miyako swung from mast to rope, doing the work of half a dozen sailors all by herself. Sparks, he thought, is that something she could teach me?

In the distance, lightning flashed. A few seconds later, an ominous rumble rolled over the ship.

3 things occured when Miyako split. One, Hyron immediately feared for her safety. Two, Hyron realized something.

They were in love with Miyako. It all made sense now. She was skilled, beautiful, and all around a badass. They couldn't help but realize how awesome Miyako was, and everything that had happened before finally made sense.

Dammit.

And three, Hyron realzied they had to help out. Hyron used vines to lash together the sails quickly and efficiently, anchoring themselves to the deck in the process. The sails had to be tucked away, to prevent the ship from being too violently blown around. The ship just had to be able to weather the storm.

Hyron didn't know how they knew this, but it just seemed to make sense. The revelations of the past 2 minutes had somehow boosted the mental capacity of Hyron.

Miyako finished trying the rope and saw Hyron lashing the sails with vines. It looks like it was time to get back down to the deck.

As Miyako began to climb down the mast the ship lurched in the waves, throwing her off. As Miyako sailed through the air she grabbed at a rope, narrowly grasping it. It burned as the rope slide through her fingers, wet in the rain. Miyako gritted her teeth against the pain and struggled to slow her fall, but the rope slipped out of her hands.

Miyako fell, twisting to try and land on her feet. She landed hard, rolling to minimize the impact. Tides, that would leave a few bruises. Miyako stood up groaning, and stumbled over to Hyron and Yerik. She grinned at them, despite her pain and called out through the wind.

"We should be ready for the worst of it!"

"Get below!" Geff bellowed to the various crewmates, who began making their way below deck. "Nothing left to do but wait it out!"

Yerik exhaled deeply, releasing the power he'd forced through the deck. The amulet burned cold around his neck as he followed Hyron and Miyako into the safety of the hold.

Sahala is a she, by the way! She has a sword but doesn't know how to use it.

"Oh! Sounds... fun. I... don't have money. At all. Like, I don't have money because I just don't."

She was babbling, and she knew it. She wasn't good with people.

"Oh! And my name is Sahala. I'm... not good at things." She stuck her hand out.

Miyako let herself be shepherded into the hold, resisting the urge to stay above deck and... do something. It felt good to be out on the deck, controlled by the will of the sea. Protected by only her skill and wits. Miyako's true domain.

They entered the hold and out of the rain. Miyako focused for a second and then all the water on her body, seeping through her clothes and hair floated off, forming a blob of water. She nudged open the door and channeled it into a stream, out the door.

Miyako turned to the rest of the group, "What are we going to do?" Miyako asked.

It took Whist's foggy brain a minute to realize there was a newcomer, she had been focused on the glory of soup.

She was hard too see, not only because of Whist's blurred vision, but also because the night was dark, and the newcomer seemed to have a very dark skin tone. Still leaning on Nayka, she said, Hi! I'm Whist, its nice to meet you!

"Hi . . . . . . meet youu,"

It didn't quite come out as planned.

Try not to post twice in a row, that's generally sort of against the rules a little bit? It's fine, just edit your post before.

Oh! Were you posting again so it let the people know who were being tagged?

A woman in the group peered at her, seeming less than fully aware. Odd words came out of her mouth, but she didn't quite seem drunk.

"Are you okay?" Sahala asked uncertainly.

"Uhh... I touch magic things. And then they stop working. And it makes me go colorless." He held out his arms as if to indicate what he meant. "I'm not actually always like this. If I avoid magic entirely for a while, it returns to normal."

As the intruders mount their horses and leave, Annimus slowly jumps up the tree, moving from branch to branch. Until he reached and poked his head through the top. Annimus winces and his eyes expand, his pupil becoming a shiny midnight sphere. And he tracks the three intruders through the rest of dusk, til a dark shadow falls over him.

For the love of Yimll-

A talon slams into Annimus's shoulder and the claw folds on itself trapping Annimus as the massive creature flies away. "LET ME GO," and continuing to growl Annimus unleashes a groundshaking roar.

At Yerik's response Miyako grumbled, but realized he was right. She couldn't fight the sea.

Miyako began blushing as Hyron walked up and grabbed her hands, looking at them. Tides, who was this Hwind? She sat their frozen while he examined her hands but pulled away as he spoke.

"Nowhere I can't handle." Miyako declared. She smothered her blush and turned to Yerik. "Let's start your training. We have to use this times stuck in here for something."

“Not a scholar, but I know my stuff.” Vance put the rug back down, content. “Anyways, your powers have to do with the fundamentals of all of magic ever: that is, magical energy.”

Quest had walked in to ask Vance's opinion, but the current conversation was much more interesting. Vance seemed to know to much about magical theory to be just a simple warrior. Who was this man?

Quest piped up from the doorway, "The elements, right?"

“Nope!”

Vance stood up to gesture about as he explained.

”So you’ve got energy, right? That’s all well and good. You eat food, you digest it, and boom: you don’t die. Honestly, whoever thought that up needs to get an award.

”It’s the same for magic, ‘cept instead of eating food, you just kinda… draw in energy.” Vance waggled his hands around vaguely. “For a lot of people they draw that energy in from themselves anyways. In most cases, people born with magic do that. The ability to convert regular energy to magical energy comes with your blood, as does whatever powers you can use with said magical energy. For example you have my Essence powers, which drains me physically when I use them.

”Other magic comes from other places. The stellari, most notably, draw their power from the sun, moon, and stars. Their bodies use up energy to harness it, but the process is a lot less direct—which comes at the cost of a lot less efficiency.”

Vance pointed at Annimus. “Your power is unique in the sense that rather than causing things, it makes other things… un-effect, in a sense. It still comes with your blood and takes up energy, but interferes rather than affects. This is because, like most everything, magical energy is a one-way kinda gig. In order to stop it, you have to just push back.”

“Gods. Fate. Mutations. Who knows? I sure don’t.” He shrugged. “My sister’s been working on trying to figure that out. But anyways, that isn’t the lesson. That’s like… side material. It’ll still be on the test though.

“Lesson number five is a lot more important if you’re trying to survive as a wizard in a world full of evil witches and spooky mansions,” Vance explained. “It’s something that comes with the territory. I can’t really explain it super well, but… well, basically…”

He picked his next words carefully.

“There’s a way to tell what kind of magic a person has… before they cast a single spell.”
