“Lesson number one!” Vance announced. He began condensing the wind about his blade. “Always set the battlefield to your own advantage.”

Hands, claws, fangs, and various eldritch stenches reached towards him.

“I have done not that,” he explained, watching the monsters warily, “to show you just how important that is.”

@The Halcyon Girl @The Aspiring Archivist

Kealie’s mouth fell open. “Vance, WHAT? This was all for a LESSON? I can’t believe this. I’m stuck in the middle of who knows where with an insane… person being thing.” Paces around, communicating with Eej

“What? A lesson? Do you truly think so little of me?”

The monsters began to claw their way out of the portals. A whole slew of nasties from… hm. Mostly Ikardi, it seemed.

”No, no. I’m going to be giving you a few at least.”

“I DONT NEED A LESSON. ONCE I GET HOME IM NEVER LEAVING.” Hyperventilating

“LESSON TWO!” He was projecting his voice for the honorable purpose of drowning out Kealie.

Three of the monsters launched themselves at Vance. Two from the front, one to his left. All looked to him like various forms of chimera.

He dropped to face between the three of them, both blades held point-down in locked arms. Within two breaths he mapped out their trajectories, discerning the monsters’ path with what he hoped was close-ish to pinpoint accuracy.

A shockwave clapped out like thunder, and the blazing afterimage of two clean slashes crossed the air. The wind blasted out from him, but this time much weaker and controlled than the likes he had used against the Bunny.

The monsters collapsed at his feet—probably not dead, but certainly taken care of. They looked to him to be unconscious.

“Never go all-out if you can help it,” Vance continued, bringing his blades back in from their follow-throughs. “Especially when facing multiple foes; especially in someone else’s domain. Every ounce of energy is crucial in a fight that you can’t gauge the length of.”

The witch sighed. This had gone much worst then expected. Unless the short man was all bravado, her mansion was lost. And she had just finished the new floor.

She turned her back on the battle. Every creature that she could summon was already attacking the intruders, so she set her sights on a different task.

As battle between a tide of demon and one man raged behind her, Madam Arcaene got to work.

The pool of water at Yerik's feet flowed together and streamed back to Miyako. It struck at Yerik again, noticeably softer than the first attack.

Yerik yelped, the end of his yelp very noticeably cut off as the water splashed against the shield and was stopped.

The witch was leaving. That probably wasn’t good. He was cutting it a little close here.

But still. Learning.

“Pop quiz!” Vance announced. “Show what you’ve learned through example: help me kill some monsters!”

Quest didn't like fighting. But he was still very accustomed to the battlefield.

Quest began to summon fireballs, pinpricks of light that grew until a raging flame. He stood at the doorway watching the entire fight, watching the tide of the battle. Every ten or so seconds when a fireball reached watched carefully waiting for the moment to strike. When Quest saw a weak point in the tide of monsters, or a Vance or Kealie needed assistance he lobbed a fireball and resumed survey of the room.

Quest sighed, back in the trenches, but something was different this time. A faint ember of hope was nestled deep within the ashes of Quest's grief. Maybe it will be different this time. Maybe this time, it won't end with in with three broken souls.

Sheltering that ember, Quest fought once again.

Arcaene grabbed a knife from the rack and slit her wrist, leaving an oozing trail of blood that fell to the floor. A small pain. She held it over the transportation circle and let the blood wash over the runes. They drank up the blood, drawing power from the sacrifice.

Sadly, the circle wouldn't be stable without a full sacrifice, but it would serve for her purposes. She wouldn't have time to set the coordinates. But the man cutting through her horde didn't seem likely to let her walk out. Anywhere would suffice.

Walking her way around the circle, it continued to devour her blood, drawing on her power. It was glowing with a sickly red light and a static pane of red began to break and reform in the middle. A vortex of possibility, one that she bent the full force of her willpower on stabilizing.

Even though Arcaene had lost today she could rebuild. A strategic retreat that would pay off in the long run. Every sacrifice was worth it eventually.

Kealie groaned, very irritated by this outcome. I don’t have a USEFUL power! I can’t fight!  “I need a morning knife,” she muttered. “Eej, sic him.” She pointed to a monster and widened the channel of life force between them.

Eej grew to large—epic—proportions, roared (because what was the fun of being huge if you didn’t roar?), tangled the monster in himself, and squeezed it dead. (Can it be a dirt one and burst apart?)

I am going on a road trip and won’t be back until Thursday, so… do what you will and drag Kealie along.

Hyron sat, meditating. Or, trying to meditate. The movement of the ship, the sound of the sea, and the ever present smell of salt made it extremely difficult.

So, they gave up on meditating until they could find a suitable spot at their destination.

Instead, they rose, shoved the vines they'd created off the side of the ship, and went searching for their room. They walked past the room Yerik and Miyako were in, and stopped to watch.

"What're you doing?" They asked.

Yerik exhaled. That had been... not good. He'd instinctively raised a full shield, instead of a partial one like he envisioned. He set his stance, determined to try again. What if he tried a half shield?

"Training," Yerik replied succinctly.

"How long did it take you to get how to fully block that last attack?"

"If you push you hard we can get you into fighting shape in six weeks", Miyako said, tilting her head, making it a question. "What else can you do besides floating and shields?"

The witch had retreated.

”These are the last of them!” Vance called. “She can’t summon any more.”

Quest watched as the witch stepped into the red portal and vanished. They quickly mopped up the rest of the monsters and Quest slumped against the doorframe, drained from his excessive use of magic.

"Umm, what do you want to do now?" Quest said, looking across the absolutory destroyed room.

@The Bookwyrm I have a character that's around where Lyras is, if you're still interested in continuing.

Muffled cries sounded in the distance. At the end of the street came a man booking it in the opposite direction, as if fleeing.
