Raviid glowed brightly with power, splitting his focus throughout the room. At the same time he healed Ji, he reached out his Foretelling to Elya, speeding her up and rapidly closing her wounds. He spread a web of power around the perimeter of the room to slow anything that tried to come through, and took a breath, realizing he hadn't since unbinding himself. It still wasn't enough. The power was going to burn through him at this rate. The world seemed to be slowing down, but he couldn't tell if that was his subconscious use of his power or just a delusion brought on by its influence.

Saatvik fell back on defense, smiling nonetheless. He deflected her attacks with his knives, putting in more effort to not get hit by her blade. Excitement coursed through him as he grew closer to her attacks, baring his canines with a smile. Saatvik upped the pace, his feet moving with trained quickness as he almost danced with Elya as they fought, smiling the whole time. He knew that she was trained, by who was a bigger question... He did feel like he fought someone who used a similar fighting style before.

His power surged through him, demanding that he draw blood. Saatvik let his grin grow as he closed in on the space in between them. He snuck in some jabs here and there, though she got him every once in a while; it didn't matter, though. As long as he could see her bleed, it was enough for him. At one point, he stood with his lips only mere inches from her ear.

"You have relations to the Angel?" Saatvik whispered, his accent coming through. "You fight an awful lot like her."

Saatvik brushed her arm, his power bursting alight again as he used it on her once again, more lacerations engraving her skin.

Elya let out another pained growl, but held her ground this time. Her blade whipped at him as he drew close, cutting deep into his arm and chest. As soon as the moments passed, though, she could feel the blood running down her arm. Getting a few hits on him wouldn't be enough--in terms of attrition, he would win this. She had to end him.

"I've met her blades with mine," She replied, going back to glancing aside his knives and slashing him with her sword. Her thoughts and focus were starting to go fuzzy--lights. She was losing too much blood. Elya watched for an opening to strike at his neck or chest, but no knife fighter would make the mistake to give her one.

They couldn't hold out. Even with Verim pushing himself to heal herself and Ji, they couldn't simply hope that he'd be able to hold out long enough to take them all.

Maybe there was an option here. A terrible one, yes: but an option. Elya watched and fought carefully, sparks and blades flying in the trading of skill on skill. Balancing attacks and defense were key to deal as much damage as possible while protecting themselves--but, with this Mystic's powers, that wasn't an option here.

Elya slid a dagger into her hand, braced herself for pain, then ran directly at the Reaper--and into his knives--to stab him in the throat.

His grin faded as he slowly came to realize what had happened. Saatvik looked down where she had stabbed, blood already gurgling in his throat. His eyes fell on her blood, the grin returning as he knees began to give out on him.

No!!”

Arya pushed through, power surging from her as the corpses separated Saatvik from Elya. She carefully grabbed her brother, then reached up to touch something in her ear as she began to flee.

“Fall back,” she muttered through gritted teeth.

Elya couldn't even tell where he'd last struck her. Agony flared through every inch of her body, pulsing and throbbing as blood soaked into her clothes and ran down her arms. She stumbled, collapsing to her knees. Her sword, shining silver and red, clattered beside her. Elya glimpsed her reflection: pale, spilling red, grimacing against the pain.

Her powers flickered away. She cried out, stumbling and falling face-down onto the floor. Coughing and hacking, she fell victim to the pain. It throbbed, thundered, then shot across in every gash like fire. Through gritted teeth her body tried to scream against her will, letting out a half-muffled, primal shriek of agony. A pair of tears leaked out her eyes, lost in the blood.

Then, just a second later, the moment of weakness passed.

Elya sucked in a shaky breath. It hurt just to breathe. She pushed herself up with her forearm, arms shaking against her own weight.

Blood spilled into her mouth. She spat it back out.

Now was no time to give in.

The Reapers were leaving. The room, for the first time since the attack, seemed to empty as corpses dissolved away, out of the influence of the sister's power. With what strength she had left and every inch of resolve, Elya crawled--dragged herself, more like--towards Ji and Verim.

Ji’s breath rattled, but it evened out eventually; he was still pale, but it seemed that most, if not all of the lacerations had sealed up. He turned away from Elya and Raviid, curling into a tighter ball as he shivered.

She dragged herself further, then--by sheer force of will, more than anything else--Elya pushed herself back up onto her knees. She wavered, shook, but eventually refounded her balance and managed to stay upright.

"H-hey. Ji." Elya managed to guide her hand to his shoulder. It was still sticky and red with blood--but, then again, so were both of them. "Ji. Look at me."

"I can't." Elya glanced around, looking at the place. A million thoughts--a million things to say--rushed through her mind, all at once.

You need to be okay.

We need you to be okay.

I need you. need you to be okay.

But he wasn't listening.

"Those people. They're called the Reapers. The Emperor's most powerful Mystics." Other than the Angel, Elya thought, but opted not to add that. "They work with the Pacis, and they came here. This place isn't safe anymore. We have to leave."

Ji’s eyes fell on the blood around them, the dust piles of the corpses, the group, then Elya.

“You’re right,” he said softly. “But people should be given time to rest before moving.”

Posted

“We do need rest, but we also can’t stay here for long.” Saaphir said. “I have a small spot three blocks away, a hammock field that stretches between two buildings, high up. We could go there, unless you have a better spot. I understand that I’m new, and you may not want to trust me, but the hammocks there are comfortable, and there are usually at least ten unoccupied ones. It is difficult to get up there, unless you have someone up there to let down a rope. Which would be me.”

Raviid slumped against a nearby wall, struggling both to stop his body from unraveling and to keep his own power contained. He nodded vaguely in Elya's direction, hazily sending another tendril of power to heal her and Ji. "I'll catch up," he choked out. "Get the others out."

Posted

"I wish we could." She really did. All of her body was shaking and growing weaker by the second. "But we can't. If we aren't out before they get back to the Pacis, then we're all dead."

Elya glanced about, taking in the situation. Lyanor and Saaphir looked fine. Lights... two people couldn't carry three.

"Ji, see if you can stand," Elya said. She turned to the others. "Saaphir, get Ne'ik. Bring him out here. Lyanor, take Verim. I'll--" She tried to stand, stumbled, shouted, and collapsed.

Saaphir jogged over to the room where Ne’ik was still tied up, then dragged him out to the others. He cast a concerned look at Elya. He wished he had some knowledge of medicine, could do something to help.

Ji immediately held Elya gently. He saw her tremble and something appeared in his eyes, something that no one has ever seen before.

Regret.

He shook his head, his eyes going back to their normal state.

“It’s okay,” Ji said to her soft.y. “Let me handle it.”

He exhaled, then with a grunt, picked Elya like a damsel in distress and stood up, wobbling for a second before finding his footing. Ji looked over at Saaphir, his eyes filled with determination once again as he steadied himself.

“It’s better than nothing,” he responded to Sapphir.

Elya untied the knot; best she could, anyways, with her hands shaking and slick with blood. It came apart after about a minute: she put the twine back away into her jacket.

"You're free now." She said simply. "The Pacis will be here any minute, and they're likely to shoot before asking questions. If you're found, you'll be killed. But we're leaving too, meaning we have nothing left to fear of you."

Despite everything, she let out another cry of pain. One extra tear leaked out.

I'm really not... on top of it today...

Elya's thoughts were going fuzzy, and she was suddenly very aware of just how tired she was.

Ne’ik narrowed his eyes. “There’s something…” he ignored Elya’s hand, scratching the back of his neck. “Hm. I’m thinking about my brother, more and more, replaying what Sapphir told me, and… what really happened to him, Elya? What-” his voice cracked a bit- “what did you do?”
