Shardcast: Oathbringer Reactions!

Chaos

Okay guys. It's time for us to nerd out about Oathbringer together, and how freaking crazy awesome it is. We're spoiling all the things. This won't really be a deep-dive like Shardkeepers was, but more of just us talking about what we loved about Oathbringer. There's a lot, and we didn't say everything, even!

You'll have to excuse us having a big cast on this one. We have Kerry (KChan), Ian (WeiryWriter), David (Windrunner), Alyx (FeatherWriter), and I (Chaos). Turns out a lot of us really wanted to talk about Oathbringer, go figure.

Comment below, sub to our YouTube channel which is getting regular stuff--and will have more than just Shardcast--and follow our Soundcloud!

(Also, what is this? A podcast coming the week after the last one? This is madness!)

As we talked about in the podcast, here's the link to Arcanum, the Words of Brandon Archive: https://wob.coppermind.net

I think Honor was good, when he was controlled by Tanavast, but as the intent of the Shard slowly overwhelmed Tanavast he became more and more literal. By the end I don't think he was insane, I think he was becoming a force instead of a person.

When Kaladin is having the confrontational meal with Azure and he describes her sword and she says something about Crimson and something, and I thought about her weird name, and I said, "huh, that's Vivenna." I'm glad i recognized her before her hair changed and before she did the Zahel kata.

I think Kaladin's 4th oath is something about letting others risk themselves, or letting others make their own decisions, or not blaming himself for failures.

I enjoyed the podcast guys. So much to discuss! Next time, I hope you also discuss the secret societies - Ghostbloods, Sons of Honor (Now that Amaram is dead, what happens to them. Who is Restares?) and Diagram (I hate Mr. T and now he is colluding with Odium)

Oh, as I'm listening through this, I did ask Brandon about the pronunciation of "Sja-anat" and we... were all wrong! Brandon uses "zha-anat" as in that "zh" is the sort of French j, in "je." It's the sound found in English in the middle of the word "pleasure."

So, take that as you will!

That's how they pronounced it in the audiobook, IIRC, though perhaps with a bit more of an 's' sound preceding the 'zh' sound.

My reactions to your reactions: (OB Spoilers)

Spoiler

  • Feather, I can only imagine your reactions to the scene where Jasnah is considering killing Renarin (and your theory being proven, of course).

  • On Odium's Intent: I think that it's much the same as with Honor's: Honor is much more encompassing that simply 'Oaths', likewise Odium is more encompassing that 'hate'. I do think he was stretching the truth when saying he's all about Passion, but it's definitely an important part of hatred.

  • The Passions being the original religion of the Tranquiline Halls is a fascinating idea.

  • Interestingly enough, that Kaladin vs Jasnah scene made the shipping even stronger. I have no idea why…

  • Totally didn’t catch the Sigzil/Hoid sotry! Nice catch.

  • Do you guys think Jezrien “died” for real, or is “trapped” a la the Unmade? Hemalurgy is an interesting thought too.

  • Viv hating shellfish hahaha right!

  • I kinda still don’t want to see Adolin become a Radiant. I totally see him fully reviving Maya, and then she comes back as a normal spren. There could be a heart-breaking scene where Adolin says goodbye to her.

  • I TOTALLY SAID THE ALEFTKAR PUN JUST BEFORE YOU DID.

Don't know why they're bolded, and it won't let me fix it.

Great job folks! Dalinar sticking it to Odium reminded me of Gandalf and the Balrog! And Jasnah soulcasting was total badchull! Taln needs more screen time stat!

I'm one of those weirdos that like the idea of Jasnah and Kaladin together! I actually think this book makes that more likely rather than less, for me... the two scenes the make me think that are the one with Jasnah asking Shallan about her impressions of him after meeting Kaladin just once (she seemed intrigued or troubled about something, as in unusually unconfident); and the other is the council of war scene after that, which is one of the only open displays of joy she shows in the book... when she's out punning Kaladin and seems to be enjoying the contest and or the shape his mind takes.

But that's just me : )

Yeah! I got the Vivenna reference! I knew that Azure was from Nalthis when she used the same "black on white" phrase as Vasher, but for me the moment of truth was when she mentioned having bad experiences trusting strangers. Anyone remember a pair of incredibly jovial mercenaries?

I didn't know Vivenna was going to be in the book, and I called it during the meal between Kaladin, Azure and the Wall Guard's Officers. "I'm not particularly worried about anyone taking her," is what really got me suspicious, even if the next part––"I trust these men"––would normally explain that line. It became clear that Azure's sword was a Type 4, and that this meant that Azure had to be from Warbreaker. Vivenna was the obvious choice.

I'm surprised it took other people that long to catch on.

Could Azure's (Vivenna mostly) sword be as powerful as Nightblood? But I wonder, Vivenna has never drawn Nightblood. So it's entirely possible that she's not into awakening inanimate objects like Shashara. Everyone in Oathbringer treats it like a Shardblade. And what would be the reason for Zahel(Vasher) to come to Roshar and Vivenna chasing him.
