Why at night?

Recommended Posts

I probably am not the first person to bring this up, but it strikes me as odd that it's pointed out that the Shaod usually takes people at night (even before the Reod). Why is that? Are we more susceptible to changes in our sDNA when we're not in conscious control of our bodies, or is the Cognitive Realm less active, leading to the Dor being more easily able to infuse people?

Or am I just overthinking this?

I think it's more to do with the fact that the vast majority of our body's functions to maintain and repair the body is done while sleeping. If someone who had a nocturnal lifestyle was struck by the Shaod, it would probably occur during the day.

Like Young Bard said it's probably connected to human's biological function (also if in the Cosmere probably it's better say Realmatic Function).... We know the Dor is in the Cognitive Realm, and in the sleep something may chage in humans.

PS:Have  We WoB or sources about Dreams and Realmatic ?

That seems more believable to me, since if it's realted to sleep then someone taking an afternoon nap or working third shift (so sleeping during the day) could be taken. It might not come up much though, so it could have happened and just never heard about it. There are probably fewer people on night shifts, so it would probably not stand out that none of them had been taken.

Only slightly related, but Taravangian's believes that his "change" happens overnight as well.
I have slight trouble imagining that someone with his ability and position would not test to see if it is just night or any sleep.

Some doubt is just born in my mind.

Every night with someone taken by the Shaod. Are those people turned at the same time ? (I will try to add this to the list of questiom, also if I want to avoid Selish question for a couple of months).

Because it's possible that people may be taken by the Shaod only in a specific moment every day....Imagine a pulse from Elantris who turn people with the right requirement into Elantrian...it's weird but fascinating

In fact the blood sealers needs to "reseal" everyday, the implication is exactly one cycle from the previous seal... without a little more info it is hard to say but this could easily be a reflection of Gaelic magic that resets with the rising/setting of the sun.

Isn't it related more to how fresh the blood is?

I remember the same, If the Sealer puts the Seal earlier or later, the Seal would last differently the next day. It don't seem to be a setted time when the Bloodseal vanishes

Yes it has to deal with how fresh the blood i, BUT Shai makes note that the blood-sealer must be there every-morning about the same time. I guess I assumed that the meaning of fresh was  variable up to about the same max as essence marks "about 26 hours"  Ill get the exact quote tonight

I guess he could refresh the Bloodseal every evening, but the first Bloodseal was applied in the morning, so it stayed that way.

The Essence Marks stay as long as they can and it's proportional to how well the seal aligns with the target - for example, those Shai tried on Gaotona lasted from few seconds to over a minute. A few didn't last at all. The Essence Marks Shai created last over a day (26 hours), so they can be reapplied every day at the same time and there's still margin of error of two hours.

Human belief does seem to effect the cognitive realm. (Like the flame spen measuing experiment in stormlight archive) Maybe someone was like "Doesn't it seem like the people change at night?" And over time it wormed its way into the collective society and "sheod usually happens at night" becomes a thing. It would probably be easier to substantiate this if we knew exactly how becoming an elantrian worked. (Roshar bonding and scardial snapping being how it happens on other worlds)
