Mat he/him Posted November 11, 2020 Posted November 11, 2020 So... does he have a canon last name? It's not said in the books (if it I am drastically missing a section) and I haven't stumbled upon any WoBs. That said, there probably is one. And it's probably unanswered. So if someone knowledgeable about WoBs could point me too it- or the lack thereof- it'd be appreciated. Thanks!
aneonfoxtribute Posted November 11, 2020 Posted November 11, 2020 Do Darkeyes have last names? I was always under the impression that they didn't 1

Flying she/her Posted November 11, 2020 Posted November 11, 2020 Honestly at this point Kaladin having an actual last name would be so weird to me. I'd be like, "You're telling me that instead of using the full name Kaladin Stormblessed I have to say a different name?" In all seriousness though, I don't know if we'll ever get one. A lot of characters in the cosmere go the whole series without us ever getting a canon last name. If it's not mentioned at this point, it probably isn't that important. Or maybe it's very important and Brandon is hiding stuff from us... Just kidding. Maybe. I don't know. 1
aneonfoxtribute Posted November 11, 2020 Posted November 11, 2020 I don't know why, but I always think of the Darkeyes like I think of the skaa, even though Darkeyes are way better off. So I just remember that skaa don't have last names and I think that Darkeyes also don't. 1
dannnex male Posted November 11, 2020 Posted November 11, 2020 I hereby bless thee with the wonderful knowledge of The Word of Brandon. Quote Questioner What's Kaladin's last name? Brandon Sanderson Kaladin doesn't have a last name because, in Alethkar, your last name is your House name. He is vacillating on what his House name would be, everyone just calls him Kaladin Stormblessed. There's a realistic expectation that if he wanted to be a Kholin, he could be a Kholin, if he wanted to adopt that as his own House name instead of having a different one. But right now he's just called Kaladin Stormblessed. Skyward Houston signing (Nov. 19, 2018) 9

Yeah, this is interesting. 1

Use the Falchion Posted November 12, 2020 Posted November 12, 2020 I just hope that whatever Kaladin's last name ends up being, we can work in a Kal-El/Kal-L pun.

It's going to be revealed that he chooses to call himself Kaladin I-am-not-a-storming-Lighteyes, but most people drop all the words in the middle and just call him Kaladin Lighteyes. Good enough? 4
Spren of Kindness she/her Posted November 13, 2020 Posted November 13, 2020 I could see that at some point 'Stormblessed' becomes so tied to Kaladin that it becomes his last name for all intents and purposes. You can make a glyphpair and everything. 2

jamesbondsmith He/him Posted November 13, 2020 Posted November 13, 2020 Darkeyes have always been a Vorin equivalent of peasants/smallfolk, haven't they? They generally didn't have surnames as far as I knew 1
gremlin303 Posted November 13, 2020 Posted November 13, 2020 Yeah I am fairly certain darkeyes don't have surnames in Vorin culture. I can't think of a single one who does
Bearer of all agonies he/him Posted November 13, 2020 Posted November 13, 2020 Yeah, I think you are right. huh. that's wierd.
gremlin303 Posted November 13, 2020 Posted November 13, 2020 (edited) They are like peasants from the middle ages, only the nobility have surnames as it was your house name, like in the WoB above. Kaladin would get to choose a surname now as he is a landed lighteyes, but until that point he would just have been Kaladin or Kaladin son of Lirin Edited November 13, 2020 by gremlin303 1
Bearer of all agonies he/him Posted November 13, 2020 Posted November 13, 2020 Oh. Yeah. That's makes a lot of sense.
