  1. I live on a farm, and on top of that I have somewhere over a dozen cats named Momotaro, Jade Dingle, Julian, Oreo, Rory, Sergeant Zimmykins, Raggedy, Loki, Nekko, Oni, Shadow, Splotches, and my personal favorite of the names, The Blackthorn.

Anyone else have too many cats pets that they love to talk about?

Finally someone who has more cats than I do...at least I'm not the craziest person here! I mean, wow, that's cool, I have six cats, one of them hates my very existence and the rest fear and tremble at my presence love me to pieces... Most of the time.

Though, I think if we combined my cats (or if I just sent Tiger there) they could combine with your cats and take over the world. A world ruled by their catiness. Their names are Annie, Windy, Mis, Chris, Tiger, and Molly. You can have them but not really, since other people might not be happy that I gave these cats a way... ;P

Anyway, I'm honestly more of a dog person (ironically). It's not that I hate cats, it's just that I hate cat litter. I'd rather not deal with that, though, if someone else cleans it up and takes care of their other needs, cats are okay. Dogs are cuter though...or maybe, I just think mine is a doll...;P

  2. 1. For like three weeks (that might be head canon), but he stayed technically because things (the Church of the Survivor) and people (Vin and the Crew) kind of bound him to the realm. Probably helps that Preservation likes to preserve things and his religion reflects that. Also, the belief of the members of his Church helped. Belief is like that in the Cosmere.

    2. Yes, agreed. Making a verb from an intent; a good trick to understanding Shardic stuff.

    3. ? I guess, but it still seems far flung to me...

I'm not sold on this. I think Kelsier's still technically a Cognitive Shadow (there's a WoB somewhere that says this, I think, I'm sure someone else can fetch it), though the very nature of Preservation (as you pointed out) might have some interesting effects on formally-human-cognitive-entities, I think that is what we should expect. This doesn't mean that Cognitive Shadows can't worldhop, but I think that Kelsier's a bit too personally invested (no pun intended) in Scadrial to leave it. That's why he stayed, after all...

Though...if it's possible for Cognitive Shadows to worldhop, I wonder what would happen if a few thousand members of the Church of the Survivor and Kel moved to Roshar... How would Cultivation's Intent (or passive Investiture...) effect that? I guess what I'm really wondering is how much belief does it take for an idea to develop into a truth/ideal, and, also, is it possible for a Cognitive Shadow to pick up Spren-like attributes because they're both cognitive entities...

Oh, whoops. Sorry for the rampage of off topicness...

  3. Could this "Stormgiant" be a thunderclast that Kalak saw in the Prelude? Yes, the only reason I think that is they accord in a storm and it seems somewhat right that they might be hinted at this early. Plus, their appearance always seems monstrous, and these giants, what ever they might be, seem like monsters... (Oh, and Dalinar sees one too in WOR on pg 75)...

Anyway, I thought that these giants being thunderclasts was about as likely as any of the above...so I'd thought I'd throw it out there. :P

  4. 2.

If Lerasium can be considered a non-sentient splinter, can Atium?

Does this mean that Demoux can breath in stormlight because he has previously eaten Atium?

I want to say this is streaching it, but that would be a crazy loophole.

It's funny, now I (mostly) agree with Tempus on this topic. So, I'll try to answer this, though... :P

Nope, Lerasium isn't quite Invested enough, though it is close... Also, Atium seems to come in different sizes, but I would guess that it doesn't come in a big enough size to be considered a Splinter... (since there are no literal Splinters on Scadrial...though Marsh should be awfully close, at least in terms of power).

The only non-sentient Splinters are Divine Breaths (and possibly Honorblades), both of these form bonds, though not much is known about the later (I have some ideas, but it's really just a lot of conjecture at this point). However, because Divine Breaths are Splinters given/deeply bonded with humans, they never form sentience. In this case, the relationship between a Divine Breath and a Returned is much more similar to the relationship between a Shard and its Holder. If a Shard didn't have a holder, it would gain consciousness (and do crazy things) that fits it's Intent, the same is true for a Splinter. When it doesn't have a person holding it, it also gains a consciousness that matches its Intent (or in the case of Nightblood, the Splinter is given an Intent and also forms a conscious to go along with that Intent). Unlike these Splinters, Lerasium (when used) is "used up" when it makes a person into a Mistborn. It doesn't form a bond, there's not quite enough Investiture there and it really doesn't seem like it's in its nature anyway...

And yeah, sorry that was probably a bit more than you were expecting (and seems slightly theoretical, that's not good. Whenever I try my hands at that, it goes nowhere fast!) :P

  5. I really can't see Vasher using it, as Moogle said, it'd be too much of a crossover. For those that only read the SA, Nightblood would just seem like a very strange spren/shardblade who talks about the past too much and acts like a giant-sword puppy...

Now, I wouldn't be surprised to see some (limited) Awakening (since I honestly can't see Vasher not having some emergency Breath in case he's in a tight bind or he doesn't have access to Stormlight. Returned have to be pragmatic like that to stay alive on other worlds...even on worlds where they have a seemingly unlimited supply of Investiture). I think though that the crossover-y stuff that he does will either seem to fit into Roshar (for those who are not Cosmerically aware) or that they will be subtle enough that many readers won't even notice them until they've reread the book a few times...

I always felt this was a possibility as well. After all, wasn't Vashers first appearance in the original Way of Kings and Brandon wrote him a backstory afterwords? (Someone please correct me if I'm wrong)

    Yes, that's pretty much it...

  6. Twilight: because teenaged girls never want/read intelligent fiction. I would argue that in some ways, though, that Hunger Games is a really dark book, if they can sell that to girls, than why not Mistborn? And anyways, I'd rather have teenagers them look up to Vin and relate to her than Katniss (or Bella; ick) any day...

Ugh, this post is starting out really snarky, I'm sorry. Anyway, you know, it's taken decades for ASOIAF to get televised, so considering that Elantris isn't even a decade old yet (publication-wise), I think that I'm not worried about something (whatever it may be) in the Cosmere being made into a movie or a game (Wheel of Time actually had a video game made based on the series back in 1999, though, it didn't do well..., yes, I know it's not part of the cosmere...), just not when...

(And I hope whoever does it doesn't somehow screw it up royally...)

  7. Her curses though can be really disproportionate; so, if you ask for a Cheeseburger, you'd probably get something ridiculously sucky, say, like hunger that never is satisfied no matter how much you eat...etc.

Of course, those curses are also too logical...

Anyway, I think I would ask to become an intelligent spren with the ability to form bonds with human beings...(probably a Honorspren...)

  8. Well. Now I'm scared this will happen. Please don't take a page out of Martin's book, Mr. Sanderson!

Kelsier's ghost will appear to Kaladin and tell him to keep killing the storming nobles lighteyes.

OR...Kelsier will appear and do something that is super-meddling in nature but will only be revealed in the annotations written in the way distant future. This is, if he hasn't already done something super-meddling in nature already.

Also, Kelsier now has enough Investiture that he's gained the "Meddler" Intent (despite not being a Splinter, obviously, but if other cognitive shadows...oh never mind, that theory is too serious for this thread). This may or may not be similar to an Intent of another character, and might be the secret reason for their dislike of each other.

For a new theory, when Nightblood eats enough Investiture on Roshar, he will be able to make a new Shard and become its Holder. Too bad he still doesn't understand what evil is...darn, the world is doomed! :P

  9. WoR:

So Szeth, Syl, and Jasnah dying and coming back (all in one book!) is something you'd think Brandon would never write? :P

Technically though, I wouldn't consider either Syl or Jasnah dead. Syl was comatose (kind of); Jasnah was just...obvious. So, that's just once, not thrice.

Hmmm, I think that Kell might take the title "Lord of the Mists" a little to seriously (somehow), okay, he already did, but it would be interesting if his Cognitive Shadow could only take on a (very limited) physical aspect when the mists were out...

  10. My theory is that splitting an Awakened object only splits its physical form, not its cognitive or spiritual form. Think about it: to Awaken something is to tell a regular object that "you are now THIS, and behave like THIS, and all this extra Investiture that I'm putting into you is going to make it so!".

Hmmm, this sounds more like Soulcasting. If one wants the stick to burst into flame, one has to convince the stick that it really out to be a flame instead by injecting enough Investiture into it. Not saying you're wrong, but usually the form chosen in Awakening is based off the Human ideal (most Awakened things try to act like humans, and the closer an Awakened object's form is to a human, the less Breath it takes to Awaken it)...

This topic though led me to ask this: what would happen if we stick some Breath into a piece of cloth and then set that cloth on fire; what then happens to that Breath?

  11. Considering Hoid's age, that is a little creepy.

Odium hates everything because he's controlled by a surly metalhead teenager. The Everstorm is actually a visualisation of his favourite death metal track.

Only a LITTLE creepy. Anyway, he doesn't LOOK all that old :P

Just because he doesn't look old doesn't make it any less squicky...(though if we're shipping grumpy scholar-types...)*flees*

But if we're going to do silly pairings, I'll ship NightbloodxSyl; or Sylblood.

And for a silly theory, the kendra is a magical fish. Hehe.

  12. Oi, this thread proves one theory at least, the mods are the Heralds...oh dear me.

Also, could a possible "fix" be changing the Q/A system questions and answers used inn the registration process? I've seen this used on another forum, and it helped for a little while..

  13. As long as the person is writing a story I'm interested in, writes well, and writes in a style I like; I'll read them. Gender doesn't matter, though, if I see the word romance, I'm pretty likely to flee. Not into romances, even if there's no love-triangle to speak of...

I actually skipped Elantris because the paperback had a cheap, dime-store-type cover. Then I read Steelheart on the strength of the blurb alone and absolutely loved it, which led me to overlook the less-than-appealing covers of some of Sanderson's other works.

Hmmm, I like Elantris' cover, but anyway...

Consciously, no. I'm not sure if I do have an implicit bias against reading female authors, though. (It's something I've always wondered about since they did that implicit bias test on CVs submitted by male and female scientists, but I don't want to derail this thread :) ) I would certainly hope I don't.

    ...

Interestingly enough, back when I read fanfiction, most of the authors I read from/enjoyed reading tended to be female authors, and I did read the fantasy sections, predominantly. I don't know if it's a demographic issue, but it does make me wonder...

Generally speaking, more men write and get published than women in fantasy, so there's bound to be a larger pool of good male authors than female authors. In fanfiction, it's the opposite. So, yeah, definitely a demographic issue, and that perhaps, publishers (still) think that a man writing a fantasy book will be able to sell it to his supposedly male audience. That this view doesn't fit with the times goes without saying though...

  14. Except if you go with Slim-E. Like a Slim covered 'E'...

Despite the obvious bad pun, I didn't bother with the Slimey-E...since numbers.

Since, I didn't think the mirror was that...obvious, I went with the double pun...Kas-mir:

(Also, thought about doing Nightmare before Christmas, but then I don't know how many people know it anymore...) :P

And, then, Sly-Smiley-10Cube? I guess??? I just do the pictures, not the jokes. I'm bad with puns.

  15. According to this:

    CHEESE NINJA
Is it hypothetically possible to Awaken an object using a Divine Breath?
    BRANDON SANDERSON
    Yes
It's possible to Awaken with a Divine Breath, but one could assume that Awakening would be stronger (due to size of that Breath) due to the relative size of that Splinter compare to normal Breath. It would still be stupid to do so, since, you know instant-death for the Returned and all. Furthermore, I don't think we know exactly what would happen if a Returned gave all their Breath (including their Divine Breath) away...we only really know what happens when they heal someone, not what happens when they do something else...
  16. I was looking at Vin's page on a wikiwalk and saw something.

"Sazed also tried to bring her back to life but revealed that merely healing a body didn't return souls."

Yet we have have Szeth and his revival. What is this? Heralds more powerful than Shards?

Don't forget that the reason Sazed could not heal Vin and Elend was that he didn't have the skill to do so, while Nalan knew what he was doing (being millennia old can be helpful in figuring stuff like this out). Endowment Returns dead people. So, it was not just a matter of time, it was also a matter of skill...if Sazed had known how to heal them, he could have done so eventually...

  17. There were two 10th doctors, so one could argue that he was the true 12th doctor or his clone. Mmmhhh, I suppose the clone could return as the Valeyard.

I think Tennant playing the Valeyard would certainly be awesome...Especially given the whole "Timelord Victorious" thing, and that ten's clone is angry and wilder than ten himself and might want to regenerate for a good reason that eventually goes horribly wrong...That could make the Valeyard into an interesting, even season-long villain if they played their cards right...

You know, I think the funniest thing about that video is that it's exactly how I thought a female Doctor should be brought into the show; the first regeneration following their final death.

If they ever chose a woman, she should be a ginger. That way, at least the Doctor is finally a ginger...even if it means she has to...well...you know. Get use to being a woman...

  18. Oi, too bad, this was an interesting topic...ah, the things I mess because I jumped off the bandwagon for a month or two... I was tempted to see if you could do it with my user name (without going for the obvious imp/nymph jokes)...

Actually, though, I could be of service, I do know my way around photoshop, but I don't really have a head for puns...(give me a pun or a design and I can do some snazzy stuff though). So, if you're willing to take the offer, I could help...

  19. Hmmm, when Endowment...endows...he's investing people with a little bit of his Intent/Ideal.

Breath can be given to others because it fits this picture of endowing; when I endow, I give you something of value. In the case of BioChromatics, when I give you my Breath, I am giving you part of my innate Investiture. When Endowment Invested in Nalthis, it Endowed/Invested/gave the people of Nalthis Breath because this fits in with Endowment's Ideal. Endowment gives stuff a way to others, thus, it's investiture is based on giving things a way (in the most simple sense, though it's more complicated than that).

You could say, simply, that Investiture's different wavelengths are based on different Ideals (Honor, Ruin, etc); that is basically what the  Q and A Kuristan quoted is about. Different Shardic Intents are essentially the expression of these Ideals; so Endowment gives away because that is the expression of his Ideal...

  20. I believe that Kelsier stayed around in the Cognitive Realm partly because he was willing to stay, but mostly because he was already regarded as such a prominent figure by the skaa. This would give him a heavy Cognitive presence, sort of like the Stormfather.

That is essentially what could not leave well enough alone means...

Anyway, back to the issue of Returned as Cognitive Shadows. This is true to an extent, actually. Before a person Returns, they must first die...and then have a chat with Endowment about their future (if they're given the choice). In this period, they would technically be a Cognitive Shadow, and if they choose to Return, they would be "bound" with a Divine Breath and put back into their body. Technically at this point, they would no longer be considered a Cognitive Shadow because they have a physical form and a new Spiritual Construct (soul; mainly in the form of the Divine Breath)...thus existing in all three realms. A Cognitive Shadow only has a small physical presence at most, and possibly a small spiritual presence. This means that Returned can't be Shadows, however they were shadows for a short time...
