  1. Szeth lashes Dalinar to the sky. Kaladin caught him and saved him. As for how he knew how to do it? He's already practiced on Lopen and Rock. He also practiced half lashings and multiple lashings on himself. Would be fairly easy to transfer those concepts to another. Plus, he's said the 3rd Ideal. He pretty much can just do whatever the hell he wants now with regard to gravity.
  2. So, this is an interesting topic to me. The names on Roshar are steeped in meaning. He compares suffixes of names to Old Hebrew with "son of" or "comes through". Shallan therefore would theoretically mean "daughter of" or "comes of" Shalash, her namesake. Makes a ton of sense since Shallan is a lightweaver and Shalash was the Herald of the Lightweavers. How does this work with Kaladin though? His name would theoretically mean "son of" Kalak. But, Kaladin is a Windrunner. The order of Jezrien. Interesting.....
  3. No, I think the moment Kaladin jumped into the pit seemingly unprotected against 4 shardbearers was the push Dalinar needed to fully trust him. Dalinar was begging for anyone to help. He was watching the destruction of his son. They would certainly have at least crippled Adolin, if not killed him had Kaladin not interfered. I think he would've done further investigating after seeing Amaram sit idly by and watch and seeing Kaladin put his life on the line. It was pretty easy for him to see who was more honorable in that moment. Before all this Dalinar viewed Amaram as his closest living friend and probably the most trustworthy man he knew. For him to even investigate and ask 17 people to ascertain Amaram's story is high praise to what he already thought of Kaladin. Once Kaladin jumped into the pit, though, I don't think there's a soul Dalinar ever met whose word he would believe over Kal's. Thus, he realizes he has to test Amaram's word.
  4. I think that Odium is limited by the Oathpact with the Heralds. I believe that as long as they suffer, he is bound. I don't think that the Oathpact was destroyed when the other Heralds deserted, it was just all put on Taln's shoulders then. I think the Heralds choose when to end the suffering. I think(when there were 10 of them) when one of them breaks, they all come back and prepare for the fight once again. The reason that peace has lasted 4000 years is because of Taln IMO. His resolve is stronger. He was able to hold out longer than the others were. It's also why he's now mad.
  5. Their anxiety is only significant because of what it means to each of them. Szeth believes he's Truthless. He warned others of the coming Desolation and they didn't believe him. Furthermore, they convinced him he was wrong in his beliefs. They named him Truthless, made him swear an Oath to do as he's bid and gave him to a trader. He's spent the last 6 years murdering people for his various masters. The appearance of a Radiant proves him right, and means the Oath he made was wrong. It would put all those murders on his shoulders, instead of just on the shoulders of his masters. That would terrify a man. In the same light, it would terrify Taravangian to have Szeth learn he is not Truthless. He would likely kill the man, or men who bid him to commit such horrible acts. Taravangian is anxious because he may be looking at his death sitting across from him, which is why he needed to convince Szeth that Kaladin was not a Radiant.
  6. Shallan being shallow and not 100% honest with Adolin and being more herself with Kaladin has been used too many times here. Let's be real. When Shallan meets Adolin, she's so far below his station in life that she really shouldn't have a chance. She has to be calculating, because without Jasnah to stump for her, there's no reason for Adolin to marry someone from a minor house in Jah Keved. When Shallan meets Kaladin, she treats him like crap. Obviously she's sees him as a dark eyed soldier who's beneath her. If that's her being herself, well then Kaladin CAN and should do better.
  7. The reason they don't have gunpowder could be a very simple one. It takes Potassium Nitrate, Charcoal, and Sulfur to make gunpowder. Roshar may not have one or more of these elements.
  8. Feeling the agony of his kills doesn't make Szeth honorable. It just means he's not a psychopath. His POVs show us his internal conflict with the wrongness of his actions. He still hides behind his orders to commit them anyway. I think Kaladin was 100% correct in his assessment. Szeth is a coward.
  9. I thought this too. It was ridiculous. I have a hard time believing someone as smart as Sadeas would've even taken this stance to be honest. There were 25,000 people who saw the the Parshendi change, including two other Highprinces. This is no longer Dalinar having visions, it's reality. A man as Smart as Sadeas would've changed tactics at that point. Glad to see his character was eliminated at that point.
  10. What is the overall point of the Knights Radiant? It's to prepare mankind for the coming Desolation(or Desolations in the past). Part of that would be eliminating the world of people who sowed discord among the people. Someone like Sadeas, who may not actively be trying to weaken mankind but is doing so out of his own greed, would be the exact type of person the Knights Radiant would be honor bound IMO to eliminate. Obviously someone like Kaladin, whose order is all about protection, wouldn't be able to do it. That's why there are 10 orders. The elimination of men like Sadeas seems to be the exact reason for the creation of the Skybreakers. If it turns out that Adolin doesn't become a KR, it won't be because of this murder IMO. Let's look at the surgebinders we already know. Dalinar may not be a murderer. We don't really know his past. However, he certainly has had murderous thoughts(towards his own brother even) and has acted out of greed and self service many times in his past. Not to mention being the deadliest killer his country has known in a long time. Jasnah has certainly killed people in her past. We know of the 4 with Shallan and we also know she has hired many assassins. Using an assassin to murder someone is no different than doing so yourself IMO. The intent is the same. Shallan murdered her father. She also killed her mother, although it was apparently self defence. She also allows an innocent wagon driver to be murdered to further her own goals. Doesn't seem too honorable there. Ym is a murderer. We know that is the main argument Nalan uses for killing him. Despite his murder, he stills attracts a spren. So, out of the surgebinders we know. 4 of the 7 are murderers or at least have had murderous thoughts.(I have a feeling we will be shocked by Dalinar's past when we get his flashbacks). Lift is a thief. Kaladin is a killer, albeit an honorable one. Only Renarin seems to be someone without much of a shady past. I think Adolin was too White Knight-ish before this murder to have ever attracted a spren. We know someone needs a broken soul in order for the Nahel bond to happen. Before this, I don't believe Adolin had a broken soul. Now, we know that a broken soul can also attract evil instead of good, so there is no guarantee that Adolin will attract a spren and become a KR. However, I'm hopeful that he will. He's my favorite character so far in the books and I want to see him fight for the good side instead of being a tool of Odium's. I really just want a scene where Kaladin is nearly being overwhelmed by 5 or 6 dozen voidbringers and Skybreaker Adolin lands and says "Really bridgeboy, can't handle a few voidbringers?" Then we see the awesomeness these two could do together. Maybe just my selfish hope. I honestly could see Adolin becoming a Stoneward or a Dustbringer more than a Skybreaker.
  11. Ask him if there are going to be 2 separate groups of Skybreakers. i.e. Nalan and Szeth vs. Knights Radiant
  12. No, she isn't an idiot. She also hasn't put it together yet or we would've been shown her repressing it in one of her viewpoints while they were in the Chasm together.
  13. A couple of points. First, there will be no love triangle. Kaladin won't be in Urithiru much in the next book, at least. He, and now Jasnah, are the only two Radiants who can cover ground fast enough to open up the other portals before the rest of the world is destroyed. I have a feeling he'll be spending most of the next book travelling, while Shallan spends most of it working with the other KR in Urithiru. So, she'll likely have her feelings for Adolin worked out by the time she and Kalladin spend any significant time together. Second, Pattern and Syl won't get along. For Shallan, that might not matter as she hates Pattern. However, for Kaladin, it'll mean everything. He's not ever going to do something to upset Syl again as he won't want to experience the depression and loneliness he felt when she left him. Third, Shallan will find out about Kaladin killing her brother. Even if her brother was at fault, it will make for huge problems with those two getting together. Helaran was the man she wished her father would be. The man she wished her other brothers would be. The one who pushed her to pursue her biggest talent. I don't see her getting romantically involved with the man who killed someone that important to her. Also, Kaladin is all about honor. The more he changes, the more the very nature of being honorable will be important to him. I have a feeling he'll find out about Shallan's involvement with the Ghostbloods and it will turn his opinion of her very quickly. So, IMO, there's no future for Shalladin. I'll vote for Shadolin instead, even though I'm not certain on that, but it seems most probable of the choices we have here.
  14. It's going to be an interesting reunion IMO. Lirin's hopes laid with Kaladin. I have a feeling he is a bit of a broken man. He worked and planned his whole life for his talented son and had it all ripped away in a moment. Furthermore, the only reason Kal went to war was to protect Tien. I'm sure his parents would've heard of Tien's death and that failure would've driven them further into depression. It also likely sowed further seeds of hate towards Roshone. I have a feeling that Kaladin's parents won't be the same people he remembered them being, having been beaten down by life now, if they still live.
  15. Well, a lot also depends on how far along Jasnah is. Kaladin says the 3rd Ideal and his wounds are healed instantly. He also heals himself instantly from a shardblade cut during his second duel with Szeth. Even with only the 2nd Ideal, he heals himself from broken legs and a shardblade wound, although it takes a few moments to do so. A couple of stab wounds seem minor in comparison.
  16. Love the book. Pacing was a little slow early and a little rushed at the end, but still couldn't put it down at any point in time. Nothing like going to work with zero hours of sleep because you were up all night reading. My thoughts: (Spoilers) KALADIN: His path was what it needed to be. It was disappointing that he didn't become this awesome destructive force of power earlier, but it would've made things too easy. I do hope that the darkness inside him is fully gone now and we don't have another book of him fighting himself though. When Syl disappeared I was worried, although Kaladin now knowing he can kill her will keep him on the right path IMO. SHALLAN: Glad Jasnah "died" early on. She needed to become her own person and not just be a clone of Jasnah with annoying quips. I thought the way she interacted with her spren was well done. Don't know what to think of her infiltrating the Ghostbloods. It was obviously useful for building her abilities, but I think this is going to cause issues as she fights the truth and lies about herself in the next books. I also think it's telling how she hates Pattern. It an interesting dynamic when compared to how Kaladin loves and needs Syl. DALINAR: Glad that he realized he was a tyrant. I also loved how Kaladin realized that Elhokar was Tien to Dalinar. It'll be interesting to see the dynamic of Urithiru in the next book. It's obviously not Alethkar and will be a mix of all peoples, once the Radiants figure out how to open the other gates. Still, will Dalinar finally get over his own issues with ruling. And bonding with the Stormfather?!! Didn't see that coming. ADOLIN: Really came to like him(much like Kaladin did). He's still a little too arrogant. Still a little bit of a dullard, but there's big things in store for him in the future. The ending with Sadeas was telling. Adolin will have his own demons now. Whether that'll invite good or bad things is the question. Not all the "good" guys can stay good in a war with Odium. SZETH: Hate that he's still alive. Severed his spinal cord, tossed by a Highstorm, fell thousands of feet and still revived. Nin just happened to know exactly where Szeth's would fall after a thousand mile fight and flight against Kaladin. Sorry, not ever gonna buy it. Sure we needed someone to become a Skybreaker. Szeth works because of how in Words of Radiance it talks about the debate between Skybreakers and the rest of the KR and it'll be even more pronounced in this version of the KR. Still can't buy that revival. Hate it even more because of the severed spinal cord. It would be nice if killing a man with a Shardblade would be beyond ReGrowth abilities. (Speaking of which. Didn't know there were fabrials capable of this. I'm guessing Nin captured Ym's spren?) Will I look forward to the reaction of the others when they finally meet up with him again? Sure, but that doesn't change my feelings on how he was killed and revived. Furthermore, the whole first two books Szeth had a sword better than anyone else's. The "greatest sword you could have on Roshar". Now he has a better one. another  Although still geeked about Nightblood being on Roshar. THE REST: Amaram didn't die - F@$K. Jasnah's alive - knew it, but YES!! Gaz - Eh. Thought I'd care more, but found I really didn't. Elhokar - He's got big things down the road. Loved Lift. Hope she turns up early in the next one. The best part of the book was the interaction between all the factions and all their scheming. Wish it was a larger part of the book. Taravangian was great. Will be fun to see his continued attempts to rule the world, which I'm guessing will involve attempts to kill Dalinar/ other rulers. Should make Urithiru a fun place to live! Gavilar knew all of them. Gavilar was apparently involved in all of them. Don't know how Dalinar is so out of the loop on all of these given that his brother was apparently the common component between them all. Shallan/Adolin/Kaladin: Storms I hope not.
  17. Who is the only one in the book that knows that the old Radiants could fly? Dalinar. I think this glimpse shows us that Kaladin has now let Dalinar know what he can do. Lopen just happens to be there as they are discussing it IMO.
  18. I agree. Auri is my favorite character in this book. She is so innocent and yet so mysterious at the same time. She is the one character that seems to bring out Kvothe's good nature at all times. When he's with her there is never any hint of the anger deep within him. It's amazing to think she wasn't originally in the book as there's so much depth and mystery to her character. I hate thinking about where she's at now, because knowing the tragedy of the book and all the foreshadowing it scares me to do so.
  19. I just found these books. Don't know why I neglected them before, but almost wish I would've neglected them a few years longer so I wouldn't have to wait for the story to wrap up. I also see no possible scenario where the events of the the current timeline can be wrapped up in the next book. Obviously the story of Kvothe's life up to the present will be wrapped up, but I envision at least another trilogy, if not more, before the world is at peace and The Chandrian are destroyed. Speaking of the Chandrian, it is mentioned at the beginning of The Name of the Wind that there is a new Chandrian. A new Chandrian would imply that the old Chandrian was dead. I believe Kvothe killed Cinder. This is why he is at the Inn. He is in hiding IMO. The Chandrian are looking for him. It also strikes me that his Inn is an actual Waystone. There is a point in the story where he gets a sense of satisfaction from looking at the feat of engineering his fireplace is. A fireplace that runs the height of the inn, both upstairs and on the main level. We've also heard, and seen a small amount of evidence, that the Chandrian won't go near a Waystone. So it appears, at least IMO, that Kvothe is hiding beneath a Waystone. Obviously there's a lot of speculation about him changing his name and what that means, but as far as why he's at the Inn, this is my personal theory.
