Well Warbreaker was published almost 10 years ago, so I'm sure lots of it is fuzzy to him by now.

This actually happens fairly often, and is the most likely reason.

opinion [OB] What topic do you feel has been discussed to death?
RShara replied to MonsterMetroid's topic in Stormlight Archive
Ugh yeah. Everyone calls him Odium except himself. Yet we're going to believe him? Does not compute lol. -
Rude. Also did anyone other than TLR and maybe a few inquisitors/obligators know of the existence of Nicrosil pre-Catacendre? Wouldn't nicrosil have been rare or hard to make during TLR's reign, which is when Vasher would have visited (if he had visited Scadrial)? It seems unlikely that Vasher, as a visitor, would have been able to discover nicrosil and make enough of it to create a sword made of it.

I don't know if he's intended to take up a Shard, but he's definitely going to be a powerful ally. And yes, I agree that it was her plan and hope the whole time.

[OB] The Heralds... and their replacements
RShara replied to Gladiator3003's topic in Stormlight Archive
Welcome! Have a cookie! It's an interesting idea that has been proposed a few times. The biggest problem I see with it is that it's proven the Oathpact doesn't work, due to human frailty. So there isn't really a good reason to renew it with different people. A better solution needs to be found. -
Yeah I'm pretty sure T is lying to Szeth to calm him. The Shin had 9 Honorblades. At some point, Nale stole his back. Then Szeth was given the Windrunner blade. So the Shin have 7, currently.

This one is because Brandon said Shallan was 1 ahead of Kaladin at the end of WoR, and Kaladin was on 3. https://wob.coppermind.net/events/156-words-of-radiance-lexington-signing/#e2845 -

At that time, we didn't have any information about the two of them, so I was skeptical but had no proof either way. Now, we have clear proof she's not, so the theory irritates me -

That RShara is so rude that way. One of my pet peeves is Timbre=Eshonai. No. No no no and NO -
Chapter 4, when Wax is asking if VenDell wanted to come along Would VenDell, as a kandra, be condisered a metalborn by Wax? Ah, Page found this WoB. So it may or may not be a typo. Adding to this thread so it's not forgotten. Thanks Page! https://wob.coppermind.net/events/256-oathbringer-london-signing/#e8654

Right but, the highstorms distribute a significant amount of investiture at regular intervals. A little wouldn't be noticed, but a lot would be. And the second letter in OB makes it clear that Endowment does not thing that the Shards should have *anything* to do with each other. That would include having their power affect other planets. I don't find introducing a 4th shard to be likely, sorry.
-
Right, but given the amount of Stormlight on Roshar, Endowment would have to notice that her power is being used there. And given that she's very non-intervention-on-other-planets, she would definitely withdraw her power. The Shards aren't omnipotent, but they would notice significant amounts of their power draining away at regular intervals. Brandon's talking about low levels of ambient power being used, not large amounts of investiture like a highstorm. Brandon hasn't actually canonized the "breath leaking away" bit, and I think using that idea would require some retconning. So he's going to have to be more firm in confirming that before we can use it as canon. Additionally, Endowment's investiture takes the form of Breath, which anyone can hold and use. Stormlight requires a Nahel bond or an Honorblade to use. People who are not Radiants have been trying to use Stormlight to no avail. The Stormfather is the Cognitive Shadow of Honor, plus a Splinter of his power. He is the one that Invests the spheres as he passes. I think he'd be aware of what and whom his power is coming from. https://wob.coppermind.net/events/25-paris-signing/#e1760 Thematically, introducing a fourth, unknown to all residents, Shard onto a planet that already has 3 Shards messing around with things, where the Shardholder herself is unaware that her power is being used, seems like a needless complication in an already complicated system. I'm sorry, this is a cool theory, but there's really no solid proof of Stormlight being anything but H+C as all of the text heavily implies.

Being an Elantrian is tied to being able to use AonDor. Remember that Sarene tried to draw Aons, but couldn't even make them glow in the air. So at this time, you have to be an Elantrian before you can use AonDor. Why that is, I'm not sure. Brandon's been a bit close mouthed about it. The movements of ChayShan mimic the shape of the region that it's from. I'm sure that the original Elantrians did a lot of experimenting to figure out how Aons could be drawn, how they work, and what they would have to look like. The rest is sort of a chiken-and-egg problem that I don't have enough information to answer, sorry The power drop off is really only with AonDor, and not with the other uses of the Dor, because Elantris supercharges AonDor in its area of influence. Most of the other uses of the Dor have a gradual drop off, because they don't have a giant magnifying lens in the middle of their region.
-
Not much, and that mostly from the Dragonsteel chapters that have been released.

Great job picking up all of these things! I completely missed 90% of them on my reads of Elantris I can answer some of your questions, but there'll be Cosmere spoilers involved. If you don't mind, then read on! AonDor is indeed very like a programming language. The mechanisms of who is chosen to be an Elantrian are still unclear. Generally, we suspect that something written in to the Elantris Aon is meant to seek out and change those who would be good conduits for the Dor. The people are trapped in the Reod state (both new and existing Elantrians) because, like the semi-functional Aons, there's enough energy to keep them going, but not enough to complete the transformation/keep them...charged up, if you will...as full Elantrians. Raoden experiences the waves of AonDor because he worked very hard to become practiced and skillful at drawing Aons. The Dor, by its nature, wants to escape and be used. Raoden, by his practice and knowledge, became a decent conduit for it, so it kept trying to force its way out through him. Access to the Dor is indeed region based. The reason for this is Because Elantris is a giant magnifier for AonDor, the drop off is more noticable. MUCH more powerful nearby, tapering off rapidly to average levels. That lower level probably has a decent range where it's functional before it tapers off to uselessness. If an Elantrian were to get too far from Elantris, they would stop glowing and would probably start to age unless they got infusions of Investiture. Think of it like a flashlight in a dimly lit room. The flashlight is very bright in one spot, and then tapers off quite fast, but the background light is still available beyond the boundaries of the beam. The Dhakor monks' bones and muscles supposedly form a rough approximation of Fjordell. I don't think that the countries they've conquered have begun to see themselves as one nation yet, so the nature of each one's individual magics has not likely shifted much.

Here's a very nice list compiled by Jofwu. Some of the dates are guesses, but it gives a very good idea of the timeline as we know it. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1JJtJhHwpKdow01n2-bsT3scVvqJd6lZh4uvpNwcslv8/edit#gid=0

I think that the amount of investiture via Stormlight on Roshar is high enough that if it were Endowment, she would definitely have noticed, and probably taken it back. Additionally, we know current Surgebinding is of Honor and Cultivation. In order to use one form of Investiture to power another requires some "hacking" has Brandon has put it. Given that Breath and Stormlight are similar, there's not a lot of "hacking" necessary, but I don't think that the Radiants are aware enough to do even figure out a little hacking, particularly, enough to power Surgebinding with Endowment's power, instead of Honor/Cultivation. Also, from 2, Stormlight inherently wants to escape, while Breath inherently wants to stick. They're similar in that they are both gaseous forms of Investiture, but I think they come from different Shards. Oh, almost forgot: SA isn't meant to be the main Cosmere series. Brandon's said he still wants most of the Cosmere to be easter eggs, although we will see more of it in SA than in earlier books, because it's later in the timeline.

Hoid has been able to Lightweave since before the Shattering of Adonalsium. https://wob.coppermind.net/events/312-orem-signing/#e8909 Also, Hoid mentions that he and Cultivation don't really get along.

They're referred to as higher spren. But "highspren" is a specific type of spren too. Confusing, isn't it?
