  1. Oh maaaannnnnnnnn. At least I have a week to decide.
  2. lol okay Though I pronounce it Yoh-len, and Ash-in with a tiny, slight y sound before the i sound in Ashyn. I would never pronounce an e anything like an i or a y
  3. Sorry, how are the names Yolen and Ashyn similar? Also, in Arcanum Unbounded, Khriss is able to observe and write about Ashyn, whereas she hasn't been able to locate/reach Yolen.
  4. Brandon hasn't really clarified all of what catalyst means, so it's understandable to be confused. I suspect we'll find out more eventually. We've still only have something like half? or a third? of the Cosmere written, so there's a LOT that still needs explanation.
  5. While that's Radiant talking, instead of Shallan, I think the sentiment holds true for all of her personalities.
  6. Correction. If a non-Nalthian receives extra Breath, they CAN use it for Awakening. They just don't have that first Breath that everyone on Nalthis is born with. Everyone has innate Investiture. The Nalthians, thanks to Endowment, just have a means of using that innate Investiture. Non-Nalthians can't use their innate Investiture that way, but if they receive Breath, they can then use it to Awaken. Hoid is able to use the Breath he gained to Awaken. This also answers your question about Drabs. They've lost most of their innate investiture and are at a lower level than non-Nalthians. https://wob.coppermind.net/events/2-jordancon-2016/#e182 Also, Brandon has said that metals themselves aren't invested or investiture (except the god-metals). Just like gems aren't invested or investiture, by themselves. Following that reasoning, I don't think that color or reflected light needs to be of Endowment to be a fuel for Awakening. The catalysts are not investiture, and have no particular origin requirement.
  7. ^^ What Spool said. I was talking about the crystal structures that create the atium. I just auto-call them the Pits as the whole shbang lol. The cracks, the crystals, the geodes, and the metal.
  8. Mmmm. Identity has been defined in the Cosmere, though, so we shouldn't apply our own definitions to it. There are also a number of WoB about Identity, that I feel make it clear that Identity is what makes a particular bit of Investiture yours, and prevents other people from using it, regardless of source. https://wob.coppermind.net/adv_search/?query=identity It sounds like you might mean Connection, rather than Identity there? Since Connection is much more of a factor for whether you can use a given magic system or not.
  9. Preservation added a little extra of himself to humans, so part of Preservation's power is also out of circulation. That's why Ruin and Preservation are still balanced in Sazed. SA spoiler Brandon's RAFO'd the current status of atium generation on Scadrial, so we don't know if the pits still exist or if they would still generate atium, since Ruin and Preservation are one Shard now. Sazed as Harmony still has much more power than Odium or any other single Shard in the Cosmere. The problem he's encountering is that the powers he holds are so evenly matched that he has trouble acting.
  10. You can't Awaken living things, for sure. So since a wound would be part of a living thing, you wouldn't be able to Awaken it.

  12. No, because she wasn't anticipating a journey. Shallan catalogued everything they brought with them into Shadesmar. They did not have lots of extra cloth or bottles of dye. She didn't have any gemstones with her. Kaladin did. The ones that Dalinar gave him for the mission. Azure had her armor, and her regular clothing, and that's it. I wasn't implying that she was going to dye the human-shaped pieces nor that she was carrying Nalthian gemstones with her. I was saying she didn't have bottles of dye to use on anything to fuel Awakening, nor did she have a bunch of extra dyed cloth. Otherwise, Adolin, Shallan and the others wouldn't have had to trade for cloth and clothing in Celebrant. This is what they had with them in Shadesmar: The WoBs are pretty clear. https://wob.coppermind.net/events/96-holiday-signing/#e3203 https://wob.coppermind.net/events/96-holiday-signing/#e3203 https://wob.coppermind.net/events/6-bands-of-mourning-release-party/#e295 The questioners are asking what would happen to gemstones if their color was used to fuel Awakening. One is even a Stormlight infused one, and another is being used in a fabrial to hold a spren. Chances of these gems being from Nalthis are pretty much zero, yet their color can be used to fuel Awakening and they would be drained to a cloudy white or gray.
  13. It's certainly a possibility. I hadn't thought of it that way. I have no objections to this idea other than the Cosmer significance I mention below. Right but other than Vasher, everything is contained within the Greater Roshar system. You don't need to read other books to figure out and understand what's going on in Stormlight Archive. So yeah, SA has more cosmere in it, but other planets(and their Shards) outside the Roshar system won't play a significant role. Vasher's kind of a cheating exception, since Warbreaker and Nightbood (the book) are meant to be his prequel stories.
  14. The only similarity between Breath and Stormlight is that they're both the vapor form of investiture. Their effects, the way they stick and leak, how they're received and given are completely different. Edit: Sorry if this is blunt, but I need to get this out of my head before I can sleep . In no particular order... Stormlight, by it's nature, wants to be used, run out, leak, and return to the cycle (similar to a water cycle). Breath, Endowment's investiture, wants to stick around, stay where it's put. While Adonalsium's investiture was parceled out, and the Vessels aren't aware of every little bit of their power that's being used across the Cosmere, Stormlight is a significant chunk of investiture. I don't see how Endowment could not realize such a large chunk of her power is missing. Related to 2, from the Letter in Oathbringer, Endowment is very against involving or interfering in any other Shard's domain. It would be very unlikely for her to allow her power to be used on another planet, given how she reacted to even having Aona and Skai on the same planet. The Stormfather is the method by which Stormlight enters the Physical Realm. How would he be able to distribute Endowment's investiture, given that he is the Cognitive Shadow of Honor, as well as a Splinter and Sliver of Honor? He has zero connection to Endowment. Related to 4, shouldn't the Stormfather know where the power he's distributing comes from? While the highstorms before the Shattering may or may not have contained any of Endowment's investiture, the highstorms and stormlight have been co-opted by Honor and Cultivation, and are different than what they were pre-shattering. Even if it had been comprised of Endowment's investiture before, it's not now. The Nahel spren are mixes of Honor and Cultivation's investiture. When highstorms pass over in the CR, they are refreshed by it. This strongly implies that Stormlight is of Honor and Cultivation, not Endowment, as they would take no sustenance from Endowment's investiture. The perpendicularity that moves around in the highstorms is Honor's perpendicularity. Not Endowment's. If stormlight were from Endowment, how would Dalinar have used Honor's perpendicularity to recharge spheres with stormlight? If it weren't Honor's perpendicularity, how would Dalinar, bonded to the Stormfather, have opened Endowment's perpendicularity? Stormlight needs to be taken in. It's not given, except for when used for Lashing or some other surge. Breath needs to be given, or endowed. You can't take Breath. This makes sense, since Endowment is about Giving. Stormlight has very little Giving involved. Related to 10, Breath doesn't heal you. If you have enough of it, you can keep from getting sick, and make it harder to be poisoned, but it doesn't heal. Unless it's a Divine Breath. And that Divine Breath has to be given away. It doesn't heal the person holding it until it's given up with Intent. This fits with Endowment and is opposite to how Stormlight works (except for the specific surge of Regrowth). Vasher is one of the most knowledgable people in the Cosmere when it comes to Breath and Awakening. Yet he hasn't been able to figure out how to use Stormlight to Awaken. If Stormlight were Endowment's investiture, shouldn't he have been able to figure this out by now? Related to 12, shouldn't Vasher and Vivenna recognize the investiture as Endowment's rather than Honor's? Thematically, having a fourth Shard's power involved in absentia in an already tense and crowded situation is a needless complication. Thematically, Brandon has said that the greater Cosmere is going to remain in the background except for cameos and Easter eggs. Having another Shard's power, from another planet, involved on Roshar to such a huge extent is not something he'd be willing to do. And having stormlight be Endowment's investiture, but unexplained as such, isn't the type of worldbuilding he does. Whew. That was really long, but now I can sleep in peace. Sorry, I just find this theory extremely unlikely, and my OCD compels me to explain all of my reasoning before I can rest properly.
  15. This will need to be moved into the OB Spoilers forum. But the 4 characters are the Heralds Jezrien, Ishar, Vedel, and Ash.
  16. Right but Stormlight isn't passive

    Steelpushing

Vin is from a purer line of Allomancers. She has more power in her Push than others, allowing her to do more with her weight.
  18. I agree with One Who Connects. This seems unlikely. Brandon has said several times that the color from gemstones on Roshar could be used to fuel Awakening. He never caveats this with "if the gemstones came from Nalthis" which would be very out of character for him if that were the case. Additionally, Azure in Shadesmar has Captain Notum cutting cloth into human shaped pieces. Since they weren't anticipating a journey at the time and none of them had packs of anything other than gemstones that Dalinar gave them, I don't think Azure would have had enough bottles of dyes to Awaken all of that cloth.
  19. Have you read the Warbreaker Annotations? Chapter 55 talks about this a bit: https://brandonsanderson.com/annotation-warbreaker-chapter-fifty-five/
  20. That's interesting. Though I would be more inclined to wonder if she used tin to hear the stream, rather than Vin's "luck" (which was Soothing/Rioting).
  21. Slight correction. Brandon's stated that entire pantheons are all Autonomy, not made of Autonomy. Pedantic, I know, but I feel like the distinction is important.
  22. Ah, here we go. https://wob.coppermind.net/events/100-rbooks-ama-2015/#e3519
  23. The Oathpact was between the Heralds and Honor. Odium didn't have anything to do with it. So whatever's keeping Odium in the Greater Roshar system, it's not the Heralds.
  24. Guys, let's keep this PG, k?
  25. Brandon's confirmed that Patji is an avatar of Autonomy. Tie this part of the OP's WoB: with this one Tie those two together, and Patji is an avatar of Autonomy.
