... I got my yearly review at work. The main complaints they had about my work were: "You apologise all the time for stuff that isn't your fault. You should not do that." "You have so many holidays, start using them, you can't save up enough and take a full year off " I think it went well.

Huh. So... The Friends Forever comic is being cancelled. Which is a shame, but I have to admit, I haven't been reading the comics for a little while. Still, I liked the fact Friends Forever highlighted some lesser shown characters and pairings, and it's a shame to see it going. ... But it's being replaced by a book called Legends of Equestria. The solicit says it's going to reveal the "Secret History of Equestria", and one of the cover variants shows Starswirl the Bearded, and the G3 ponies. All of the headcanons are about to get smashed, but okay IDW. You got my attention.

closed for time being Honor Spren draws OCs
Quiver replied to The Honor Spren's topic in Creator's Corner
Okay, um... I'd kind of like to request a picture of my Oregon Dalles OC? Lyla Robins, photographer, orphan, and fangirl of people who don't deserve positive acknowledgement let alone a fan club. Thing is... I have a personality for her (see below), a prop or two to associate with her...but I've been very sketchy with regards her actual appearance. Which is to say, you would largely have carte blanche in that regard, if you decide to draw her. What I do have...well.- 25 replies

Aha! So, sleep is one of your weaknesses. Is a start.

I feel like I should apologise fir holding up Dalles...? Sorry. Ihad a lot of trouble writing Lyla, since...the most IC reaction for her would be to (want to) skip town with Shiny, but I don't know if she's made enough of an impact there to justify migrating yet. So... I kinda hit s brick wall hard. Apologies to Edgedancer and everyone else for the hold-up.

I've never made it as far as a fight scene in my writing, and my RP fights have been rather...eh. I admit, I have a tendency to glaze over when those scenes go on too long. So, this advice is wholly theoretical. Clarity is the most important thing with a fight or action scene. Don't get bogged down in details - too much information is distracting and confusing. But, not enough can leave you wondering how the heck a character did what they did, especially for something like Mistborn, where characters are constantly moving. Besides that, I'd say tone is a really important thing. A duel between two Samurai might warrant artistic language; a duel between gunslinger at high noon would be more about dragging out the tension until one of them reaches for the pistol. A firefight between soldiers might warrant either precise and methodical action (reflecting how precise and well-trained they are) or frantic, broken and rambling sentences (to demonstrate the fog of war) So... I guess, asking yourself "How do I want readers to feel when reading this action sequence" might be a place to start?

Yes. Yes I would. (I am trying not to jump on thus bandwagon too quickly. )

I remember wanting to do this a few years back; start a MySpace account for a fictional character. I've also been reading a lot of IC Lets Plays lately. And I've wanted to do one for a pokemon trainer. My point is, yes, enthusiasm is real.

Suggestions for names are encouraging. And, I suppose. But also, I guess, for general creative talk? "I'm working on X and did Y", that kind of thing. So...might be a superfluous thread...

Oh, huh. This might be of interest to people. If any of you decide to take advantage of this service... well, you're options are currently limited. But the Rebirth Deluxe One-shot was pretty good, and I've heard very good things about the current Superman run. (I'm reading Green Arrow, but that book is... weird. I mean, I buy it twice a month, so I guess that should nominally count as a recommendation, but... really uneven book. Unless you really want to check out Green Arrow, I'd recommend the other two.)

So... I hope this doesn't seem like I'm disparaging any of the other topics floating around in this forum. But it kind of occured to me that they tended to be rather specific; as in, topics like "Critique this magic system", or "Post creative ideas you have" or "Write a hook for this picture". And that stuff is great. I love the Creation Daily thread (I mean, I hate how much better everyone else ideas are than mine, but that's besides the point ). But it kind of occured to me that... Well, maybe it's just me. But sometimes, I don't have concrete stuff I want to post, but I have things I want to talk about; vague ideas that I could maybe develop into something large and structured enough to warrant a post sometime in the future. Or, I might be really struggling with writing a certain scene, and I want advice on that, but I don't think that it warrants an entire topic. (Or - and if you're in a conversation with me, you'll know this is a common one- I wonder "is this a good idea" and am not really sure where to go or who to ask with it) So... I thought maybe this would be of relevance to people. The Random Stuff thread, Creative Corner edition You know, a general, catch all chat thread (like the Random Thread in the General Discussion forum, or the Question series in Oregon) just geared more specifically towards chat about writing, artwork and other stuff along those lines.

I saw that show when I was a kid. I had the VHS tapes. That thing was dark. Looking back at it now - a ragtag group of survivors making their way to a mythical promised land, while being pursued by their enemeis... well... ...And I have a bunch of ideas, and I'm never sure if they are good, bad, or the type of things which shouldn't see the light of day. But I bother people with them in PM's anyway. So... here's one I thought was goofy which I'm batting around lately: A typical, fantasy, fairytale princess get's kidnapped, as typical, fantasy, fairytale princesses are wont to do. Her kidnappers are aliens, doing the alien abduction thing that they are best known for. Genre mashup hilarity ensues.

@Oversleep @Shqueeves Funnily enough, I've been thinking lately that I'd love to replay some of those games. Only ever played the original, II and Black Flag... though my lack of any gaming platform hampers my ability in that area these days. That film though... yeesh.

I don't mind Miles (when he isn't being excessively pushed as the new hotness) since my Peter is a 20-30 something year old husband and father. Miles is welcome to be the teenage Spider-man. My problem with Marvel, frankly, is how they cherry picked continuity after Secret Wars. Like, Stark no longer being inverted, but Sabertooth is. Or the entire Havok-Wasp mess from Axis not being resolved. I don't mind AU characters. Heck, Old Man Logan gets the best parts of Wolverine without his baggage, and let's us have Laura! But I feel like Marvel is using the soft reset of Secret Wars and the 8 month gap to make readers forget the earlier stuff happened, which is...frustrating

I generally like alternate universes, but mixing them can have...well, mixed results. I think Power Girl worked well as a survivor of Earth-2 (and the Worlds Finest book, while not very good, had a fantastic story hook for her and Huntress). But on the other hand you have Spider-Gwen, who...confuses me with her crossovers to the main Marvel Universe. So...yeah. So far, Green Lanterns hasn't really cleared up the Volthoom situation, and I suspect they aren't going to. Readers are just gonna hae to roll with it, which... I'm fine with, since that book is working on the basis of its characters. (Plus when they did try to do something plot based, we got the Red Dawn story arc which ended so frustratingly that I nearly dropped the title)
-
I've given up trying to understand how Volthoom works. "So he's the first Green Lantern, but he's also the entity powering the power ring of Earth-3 somehow"...? (Also, her Power Ring outfit was cooler) I relate more to Jessica's character, though, so I just kind of gloss over the mess that is Volthoom.

Most Anticipated books of 2017? (Besides Oathbringer)
Quiver replied to Ammanas's topic in Entertainment Discussion
The Winds of Winter. Other than that... mostly comic books. -
Huh. Green Lantern Corps movie, staring Hal Jordan and Jon Stewart, described as "Lethal Weapon in Space". Okay DCEU. I'm more a fan of the Simon Baz/Jessica Cruz team up you've got going on in Green Lanterns these days, but I admit, I'm curious.

The Official Thread of Relationships
Quiver replied to Curious Anamaximder's topic in General Discussion
The way he's questioning your decisions certainly sounds a bit...odd. Maybe I'm projecting, but if I were to ask something like that, I'd probably frame the question a bit differently to show that it is curiosity, not passive-aggression or anything. Then again, it might be that he is bad at social stuff. I know I've said and done things and not realised until hours after the fact that it might be misconstrued. If he asks about a decision, replying and showing how it doesn't break policy might be best. If he's curious or having trouble learning the policy and What Not To Do, then it's a quick lesson for him. If he's doing it to aggregate you, then hearing technical policy drilled into his head everything he tries to throw you under the bus might make him think twice. (As a caveat.... I am a very literal thinker on this. As in, I've been told by my supervisors that I follow the letter of the law in there too tightly. So... my advice of "Double down on policy" might not be the best...sorry) -
Okay, the grammar is awful. It ought to be Crisis IN infinite Cosmeres, but I wanted to keep the reference to Crisis on Infinite Earths as close as possible. Of course, none if this would be an issue if Brandon hadn't recently released an anthology whose abbreviation is the acronym for Alternative Universe. Anyhow. Alternative Universes can be one of my favorite tropes in fan fiction. I always find 'What If', Elseworld and speculative histories fun. So... This struck me as an interesting or fun thread idea. What kind of Cosmere alternate universes would you like to see, or how do you imagine certain events would play out if one or two factors were different?

Having a Bad Day?: Get 'yer Hugs here!!
Quiver replied to Curious Anamaximder's topic in General Discussion
..maybe this isn't the right topic for this. I was just lying on my bed, reading a book, and a thought occurred to me: "Is this seriously my life?" I'm almost 30. I have no life savings. I'm not particularly invested in my work place career. I've lost touch with most of my childhood friends, and I still live at home with my parents. I'm not having a...bad day, exactly, bit I suddenly just feel really hollow and...disappointed?
