I'm on mobile, so I'll keep this short. I have the same concern about this being a set up, but I think it's more likely that Mark was saved because he's the one that stole Ecthelion's breath and thus has a rabbit. I just don't see any reason for them to reveal themselves so blatantly for any other reason. If anyone has a rope, I suggest blocking Mark tonight.

It wasn't as good as Mark says it was, IMO. My plan was to get multiple 4 breath strawmen out there and constantly check people looking for fluctuations in Breath. The idea was that we might be able to find the Returned by someone that gets an influx of Breath. Problem is, that didn't take into account the Lottery or reclaiming or anything like that. Plus, it would tie up people's actions with needing to check the same person over and over again. That's why I never got around to posting it when I got up. Like Bard's plan, I just felt like it had too many holes in it for it to work and I didn't want to waste our time with a plan that likely wouldn't pan out. We've talked about this kind of thing in past games and it never seems to work out. If they're really inactive, then they never respond and we don't learn anything. If they're lurking, they typically just pop in to say that they're still alive and that's it. Again, we don't learn much. The lynch is our best tool for finding Eliminators and it feels like a waste to use it on lurkers to most people. If someone gets enough breath for a Rabbit though, I definitely think they should start killing off those that aren't talking. Some people find that to be a bit cruel, but if they're not saying anything, they're not helping us either.

I remember this one. It was a blast to try to balance the defenses with the need to find the Forgotten. Not that I survived long in the first game. If I recall correctly, the Forgotten were the ones that protected the villagers most of the time that game! I'll look over the new changes later, but I highly recommend this game and I hope other people will chime in on how to make sure it's balanced as well.

I just went back through our PM. I don't see where you said that he said he had three breaths. He told me that he had 4. That helps confirm it in my eyes that he was fishing for information though.

Maybe. But, with everything else, I think it's a safe assumption to make.

So I had quite the conversation with Magestar in PMs over the night and while he hasn't allayed all of my suspicion of him, I'm at least willing to give him the benefit of the doubt for now. But, if Mark is a villager (I highly doubt it), I'll probably be going back to him because part of my read on Mark is based on the idea of Magestar being innocent. As I eluded to, I went back through the first day and I really think that Mark is most likely a Returned. To start with, he contacted me during Night Zero basically just because. He asked me if I had anything I wanted to say to him even though basically nothing had happened. This, in and of itself, wouldn't be all that concerning as I could see villagers creating preemptive PMs just as likely. But, when combined with everything else, I think this was Mark wanting to have a means of getting my thoughts before I went to the thread with them. A way to keep tabs on me and see if I was suspicious of him or his teammates. So starting with Night Zero: He starts off fairly suspicious of me, but also seems to be hedging about it as well. Almost as if he doesn't want to get the blame for if/when I die. Then the PM happens, which seems a bit weird to me. Kind of like he wanted to see how I felt about him accusing me in thread. We talk for a bit and he tries to get my breath total out of me by supposedly telling me his total. So he was already fishing for information. Then, I tell him about one of the rudimentary plans I had to help us find Returned. I told him that I was exhausted though, due to being so busy at the start of this game, and I'd try to get it up tomorrow. Then Mark offers to post it instead. To me, it felt like he was trying to take some credit for the idea which would make sense if he was a Returned. If he could attach his name to a plan that he knew came from a villager to stop the Returned, then that would make him look a lot more like a villager later on. That's the last I hear from him, which makes sense for the 180 he did once Day 1 started. The next time that Mark mentions me, he's gone from suspicious of me to voting along beside me. And again, hedging on why he's voting a certain way. Plus, I think that his wording, "Given that this lynch isn't really in the hands of villagers" sounds like a slip up to me. How was that lynch not in the hands of the villagers? We'd only had a few votes by that point in time and there was still plenty of time and there were a lot of people who hadn't voted yet. But what really got me when I read back through was this whole bit that he said next: This just doesn't make sense to me. It sounds like he's trying to put suspicion on me, but then goes on to say that it's something that I do every game? He votes with me, but isn't convinced by my reasoning? And finally, I don't even know what to make of the last part, but it does seem like he's using outside knowledge to come to those conclusions. This entire thing just seems to be a bunch of double talk. Meta is suspicious, but he's not. He could die or he might not. It's like he doesn't want to come off too strongly in either direction; much like an Eliminator would want. Finally, last night: He doesn't seem all that concerned about the possibility that he could be the next target from the Returned. In fact, he's downright nonchalant. Perhaps because he knows he won't be targeted due to being a Returned? So that's my case. I really think I'm on to something here. And if I'm right, we soft clear Magestar as well since the vote was pretty close and I don't think they would've taken that big of a risk. Magestar was pretty well set to be lynched until fairly late in the day after all.

That is indeed one possible interpretation. My case is that is exactly what you want us to think was the reasoning behind it. Of course you want us to believe the version that makes you look innocent. Especially if I'm right, that was part of the reason you intentionally made the mistake! Also, it's not an unprovoked attack (although that's an interesting choice of wording for it, if you ask me...). I saw something that I feel is suspicious and pointed it out. Then there's this: Another good Eliminator tactic is to just voice your "opinions" without putting any weight behind them. Anyone can say anything in these games. Just because you say that you wouldn't mind Bugsy being lynched doesn't mean you actually want to see him lynched. If you two were Returned together, you could easily say something like this in an effort to help make yourself look good if Bugsy does get lynched while doing nothing to get it to that point. It's very Eliminator-ish to be this wishy-washy to me and while it's not just you, you are the one that specifically brought it up this game. I understand not wanting to accidentally lynch a villager, but it's going to happen; probably more often than we'd like and definitely more than we'd like if we don't actually take a stand and take control of the lynch. I'd much rather have a read on someone because they tried and made a mistake than a bunch of platitudes of what they might have, could have, done that could just as easily be lies. You're all giving the Eliminators an easy hiding spot where they don't have to commit to anything just so you don't think you look nearly as suspicious.

Okay guys, I’m finally back and ready to go! Joe has taken back over his game and other than classes starting tomorrow for me, I’ve got my free time back. I’m going to address everything that has happened so far today. First of all, this has been a horrible start! Where is everyone? We’ve only had (not even!) 2 pages of discussion so far? Guys, we’re not going to find the Returned by staying silent…. They’ll gladly sit back and let us do nothing if we don’t force them out of hiding. As of right now, anyone who hasn’t at least spoken up is partially suspect in my eyes. Granted, I know that some of them are just lurkers, but this is still pretty ridiculous. Second, like Bard, on the first night, I was trying to come up with a way to use the steal then kill bit to our advantage. My initial idea was to get the person being lynched to give up their breath. When I asked El about it, I found out that breath transference come after the lynch and that’s all the further I went with it. This “second lynch” idea of Bard’s is just a bad idea to me. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that it helps the Eliminators more! First, as others pointed out, we’d be effectively killing someone for what amounts to not even a cleared player! It wouldn’t be all that difficult for the Returned to just attack themselves and then get our breaths that way. It would make them look even more like villagers even! In fact, with how quick you were to come up with this idea, maybe that was the plan from the start… Next, if people are transferring breaths, then we lose any breaths that they had in any items they’ve created, thus making it even harder for people to create more useful items like Lifeless. This is especially concerning if Ecth is telling the truth about how many breaths he had. If people can start out with that many breaths, they could be incredibly close to getting a Lifeless Rabbit already…. Third, almost all the discussion we’ve had so far has been centered around this plan rather than focused on finding the Returned. Redirecting the Village’s focus is something we’ve seen Eliminators do time and again. This bit from Magestar really caught my attention. Thing is, I have been acting differently. I’ve been incredibly busy and so I haven’t been able be around as much as I typically try to be. So if I am acting differently, then why does Magestar think I’m not? Could be that he knows my alignment and is trying to get on my good side. Not to mention the whole bit about him missing the fact that Ecth’s breath was stolen just feels like it was forced, IMO. It seems like he intentionally tried to misunderstand the rules. I’ve got to agree with Lopen on this one. It almost sounds like you know exactly how much trouble we’d be in. For all we know, the Returned started with a low amount of breaths and/or already spent their breaths. Beyond that, I think that targeting people with a lot of breaths is just a bad idea in general. Most people are going to be putting breaths into awakening items. This includes the Returned. And we won’t know where those breaths came from in the first place. If someone wins a decent amount in the Lottery or if they reclaim some breaths to make something else, you’re condemning them to death pretty early on here. Granted, we will want to keep tabs on people whose breath is constantly fluctuating, but you just straight up wanting to lynch them makes me think that you’re trying to keep villagers from building up breaths for stronger awakened items. As I noted above, since breath transference happens after the lynch, this won’t work. It kind of make me a little suspicious that this kept coming up. A bit of a hivemind idea? Trying to get us to waste time and deaths to find this out? I’m also wondering why Araris is concerned about the Returned losing potential allies. I mean, I get it from a game play aspect, but it still seems like it’s counter-intuitive. That’s about all I’ve got for now. Seriously though guys, we need to actually get things going from here on in. We’ve practically wasted the entire day!

It wasn't the poke vote within itself that caught my attention. It was how/when it was made. Don't confuse the two. That's like saying that I didn't have reason for voting for Sart in LG22 on day one because it was all about the fact that he brought up whether or not we should even have a lynch. That might have been the reason behind the initial vote, but it wasn't at all the reason I stuck with that vote. That was due to the circumstances I saw playing out in the thread due to the votes. The fact that you guys are equating the two makes me think you're already trying to spread suspicion rather than an actual read. Of course now that Bard is saying that he didn't even have his PM yet makes it a zero sum game again. If he didn't have his PM yet, then he couldn't have been in a doc with someone that could've alerted him to the fact that we're starting on a Night turn. Which means he's just as likely as anyone else to be an Idrian.

Bard seems particularly enthusiastic to start the killing! Thing is, I'd typically chalk this up to an Eliminator trying to get an early start, but since it's a night turn, I think Bard just forgot. I'd think that another Eliminator would've reminded him that we start on a Night turn rather than making that mistake in thread.

Just to let everyone know, I will be holding to Joe's time for the cut off for the day. That absolutely doesn't mean that I will finish the day at that point; just that I will not count anything after that. There will likely be some fluctuation due to the switch, but I'll try to make it as smooth as possible. We'll see about actual write ups. I kind of want to allow Joe to do them, but if I come up with something great, I might not be able to help myself. Just wanted to give you all a heads up for how things will be going from here on out. I'd hate for this situation to affect the game after all!- 1559 replies

The basic premise of the game is as simple as these guys are saying it is (welcome to our little corner of the 17th btw!). The complexity comes from all of our players. It's the lies and trying to decide who to trust and who to kill that makes these games so crazy. So, in a sense, you guys are to blame and the games can be as complex or as simple as you allow them to be! I totally understand where you guys are coming from though. When I first heard of Mafia, my mind was blown by all the possibilities and I spent a long time just reading past games on that forum and trying to prepare myself, so let me offer you one piece of advice: nothing can prepare you for these games. There's just something so completely different about being a player, the fact that there are actual consequences to your actions, that you'll never be able to understand as a spectator. My advice to you is to just jump right in. Even if you feel like you're drowning, we'll help you tread water until you get your feet under you. We have an amazing community of players here. We'll all stab each other in the back in the games, but outside of the games, everyone is incredibly friendly. Thus why I call them all Gentleman Killers. I do hope you give a game a try. We'd love to stab have you!

Well, us Cultists didn't really stand a shot. Didn't stop us from trying! I think the Senate mechanic is a really good one. It just needs a few tweaks, because it did feel like all of the focus was on it. With the scanning and extra votes, it became almost impossible for the Cultists to win. It's too bad that we didn't get the results for one of the Derethi though. As I said in the Cultist and the Dead Docs, I think it would've been hilarious if we both wound up joining forces until the end! Special thanks to Alv for stepping up and finishing the game off after Mek disappeared! Quick Fix Game 17: Gotta Kill 'Em All
Metacognition replied to STINK's topic in Sanderson Elimination
So you're not as amiable to just hitting whomever as you state to be. You seem to want us to pick targets that you would already agree with hitting. Just saying, you seem a bit biased on who you actually want us to suggest. If you're just going to negate any suggestion and "roll some dice" if you don't get the answer you want, then you're not doing anything more than anyone else is doing; you're just wrapping it up in the concept that you're allowing others to choose. Thus taking away any responsibility for your attacks. Nyali is only likely to die if you believe that she is telling the truth about how many times she's been attacked. Beyond that, the first voting block is down to just Lopon, Bugsy, and Bard. Team Dinosaur is Nyali, Eloden, Silver Dragon, and Conquestor. If you want a specific name, I suggest Silver Dragon. So there's a target for you. I'm all for discussion of it. In fact, I'm looking forward to seeing who else is suggested. I'm also eager to see how you wind up deciding your target based on multiple possible targets.- 430 replies

Yeah, let's see how "open" Team Dinosaur is. I suggest you hit one of them. I wouldn't be surprised if they come on here to try to redirect you after all.- 430 replies

Quick Fix Game 17: Gotta Kill 'Em All
Metacognition replied to STINK's topic in Sanderson Elimination
So the last two days, I've been distracted due to my girlfriend's birthday. I only got on to deal with the Orlok situation because I thought it was a bad rap. I'm sorry I didn't get on all last cycle, but I decided to bring the typical Spa Treatment to her and I was the only Attendant. I even did the whole manicure thing and I have no idea how that's supposed to be done. Everything said and done, I don't think I did too bad*. Anyways, I want to say that I agree with this move to remove inactives. This really does help Team Dinosaur though, as it gets us not to focus on them. I believe they're the biggest voting block right now and, as what happened with the first group, I highly doubt that if one of their members were voted on, that they would just let it happen. Nyali can talk a big game about how it was supposed to be just a non-aggression pact, but I'll bet you that they'll team together to protect one of their own. It's already happened once this game and I was saved by the altruism of Alv. Don't be fooled into thinking that this will be any different when push comes to shove. But I also don't like the idea of someone lurking their way to victory in a FFA. Just look what has happened already! Ripplegylf actually came on to post because of this. Who knows how many other people are trying to wait for us to weed each other out? I still think we should get rid of the voting blocks. They are still a big threat to allowing for a fair FFA game. That said, I'd much rather lose to a voting block than a lurker. At least the voting block put in the time and effort to beat all of us. Emerald101. *Yes, it's a bit of a humble brag, but come on. That's a pretty storming good job for a guy!- 430 replies
