Anniversary Game 3: The Curse of the Koloss

Seonid has the right of it, but just to make it official, I would take that most recent kill order put in. I understand that not everyone's schedules can always sync up so if plans change and orders need to be changed, I try to accommodate our players.- 1403 replies

Anniversary Game 3: The Curse of the Koloss

Please remember that you cannot use outside resources for stuff like this though. If you build the cipher yourself then fine, but you would have to build it from scratch. You cannot just go to a website, allow it to build the cipher for you and then give people the key and the website. They would have to decipher the text themselves as well. Not saying you were suggesting that, Arraenae. Just making sure that's clear in case anyone was thinking about doing so.- 1403 replies

Anniversary Game 3: The Curse of the Koloss
Metacognition replied to Metacognition's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Day 1: Supply and Demand It seemed Herwynbe and his Mysterious Master had things quite in hand. By giving everyone a place of warmth (in the roaring fireplace, the food, and the drink), rather than everyone jumping at shadows, the village seemed to be calming down. Perhaps they’d be able to handle this situation with cool heads and logic rather than suspicion and paranoia. As they ate and drank to their content, the shadows in the night didn’t seem all that scary anymore. …..For now. Unfortunately for some of the Villagers, they had responsibilities and jobs that needed to be seen to. And a shop that needs cleaning Whistler thought as he left the Manor earlier than the rest. He itched to be back home. It wasn’t that other people didn’t keep their own places relatively clean, but whenever he was out, he always felt like he could do better. He typically kept himself in check though, as it was mostly considered rude to tell other people their homes were a pigsty. He smiled at that and started whistling as he made his way back through the mists towards his shop. Besides, he thought. After awhile, I just know my place needs my loving attention again. The town was quiet as Whistler made his way through it. Everyone was either asleep or up at the Manor, trying to keep their fears at bay. There wasn’t even a breeze to swirl the mist around. Perhaps that is why Whistler was able to hear the shuffling and whispered voices and stop whistling before he was noticed. Outside of his shop, there was a group of people huddled together; Whistler couldn’t make out how many. They had a lantern that was mostly shuttered so as to not give themselves away. “Destroy their supplies and their stockpiles and desperation will set in,” said one of the shadowy figures. “They’re going to know it was us,” said another. “If Metras hadn’t turned on us, they’d just think it was their bad luck. Ruin take him!” “There’s nothing we can do about it now,” said the first. “We will carry out the will of our Lord, no matter the risk. Let them do their worst. We will still prevail.” The other figure nodded. “As the Lord Ruin commands. Shall we?” And the figured lifted its hand that held the lantern. The first figured nodded. They unshuttered the lantern and Whistler could make out a glint of metal in one of their ears. Pierced by metal! Whistler exclaimed in his head as he remembered the warning from the man from earlier that day. And it became just as clear what they were planning to do. “No!” Whistler shouted as he went to rush them; trying to stop them before they could throw the lantern and burn down his shop. He barely made it two steps before something passed in front of his face. He was suddenly flying backwards, a hoop of metal shoving him away from the figures as they glanced around warily. They already had knives in hand, ready to attack. The hoop pulled Whistler back and up until it came to rest on the other side of a nearby chimney. Whistler heard a grunt as someone on the other side of the chimney collapsed against it, breathing hard. “They would’ve killed you,” the new stranger panted between breaths. “But my shop!” Whistler cried. “You can rebuild a shop. You can’t get back your life.” Off in the direction of Whistler’s shop they heard a “Whoosh!” and the mists were lit up with a new bright light. The stranger didn’t hang around. They left as silently as they appeared. Whistler stayed on the rooftop, crying softly as he watched his livelihood burn. Night 1 is done and Day 1 begins! You have 48 hours until the end of the turn. Whistler was attacked, but survived! I also wanted to let you guys know that you guys have done such an great job with your characters and RP that I’m constantly out of upvotes to be able to give! It’s been amazing so far! Please keep it up! I like having this problem of not enough upvotes! Player List- 1403 replies

Anniversary Game 3: The Curse of the Koloss
Metacognition replied to Metacognition's topic in Sanderson Elimination
I would've said something sooner, but I've been away all day. This is correct and it's even in the updated rules or the uses of different colors and how and when to use them. If you need to, you can divide your non-RP stuff from your RP stuff with a horizontal line like so: (to do the horizontal line, it's [hr*] with the asterisk removed, in case you didn't know) or using purple would be a decent substitute as well. We really want to keep Blue text as a form that people can use for serious situations and the like. For example, if someone has been inactive due to the loss of a family member or something equally horrifying, we want a way to be able to convey that without people wondering or worrying that it might be a gambit on the other person's part. Blue text is sacred for that reason. Thanks.- 1403 replies

Anniversary Game 3: The Curse of the Koloss

Night 1: The Problem with Shoes There was an edge to the atmosphere in Tyrian Falls and it had nothing to do with the chill in the air. It was as if they were all waiting for the other shoe to drop. Not that anything had happened to make them think that even the first shoe had dropped, but it still felt like it had. As the day day wore on, that feeling just kept getting stronger and stronger. Like a rubber band stretched too tight, it was only a matter of time before everything broke. It was late afternoon when it finally happened. “Someone please help!” The shout came from somewhere near the Village square and the people there stopped in the middle of their final errands before turning in for the night. There was still just enough sunlight to see how mangled the man that stumbled out of one of the alleyways was as he lurched forward. His face was mask of blood. His left arm hung uselessly at his side. His clothes were in tatters. “Please,” he said, reaching towards no one in particular, if he could even see anyone at all. El reached the man first and caught him as he started to fall forward. He was far too heavy for her, but she did her best to lay him down as gently as possible. Unfortunately, without her herbs, that was about all the more she could do for him. She looked around before spotting exactly who she needed; the town Messenger. “Vomit!” she cried. “You need to head up to either Lord Conrad’s or Lord Tekiel’s manor and fetch back one of the Terrisman. They should have some basic medical knowledge! When you’re done, swing back by my shop for some yellowleaf and my mortar and pestle.” Vomit shuffled back with his hands up. “No can do.” “What do you mean? This man is going to die if we don’t get him attention and fast!” “By the time I got there and back, the mists would be out!” “So?” “So there’s no way I’m going to be out there running around so a Mistwraith can gobble me up in one bite!” More people were gathering now. Whistler stepped out of his shop before turning right back in and rummaging for some clean rags and towels. Suddenly, the man reached out and caught El by the arm in a grasp much stronger than his injured body seemed like it should’ve been possible of. “Please… Help.” He said again. El turned back to the man and tried to comfort him. “We’re trying. We’ll get you help in no time. Just be calm and rest.” The man shook his head at this. “No. Not for me. Help you. You-” he stared before being cut off by a coughing fit. “You’re all in danger. Ruin draws his attention here. Koloss. They’re coming. Don’t trust anyone pierced by metal.” El looked around at the crowd that had drawn around the dying man questioningly. It seemed like a lot of them were confused as to what the man meant. When she turned back to the man, he was smiling. “Ha,” he said; his voice barely above a whisper. “You see, Ruin? I beat you. You sent your warriors, but I still warned them.” He let go of El’s arm and reached for his chest. There he dug into the bloody tangle with his fingers. “You,” he hissed through teeth clenched together in pain. With one last burst of energy, he burrowed his fingers deep, until they caught on something. Then he pulled, ripping it out of his chest with one final, triumphant cry. “You can no longer control me!” The entire village was silent in the man’s passing. The other shoe had dropped. Welcome one and all to AG3! Best of luck to everyone, whether you’re a Villager or an Eliminator. Let’s just have a fun, exciting game! PMs are being sent out as we speak. If you don’t receive one, please let me know. As I said before, we begin on a Night turn. Everyone has 24 hours to send in any orders they have for the Night. PMs are indeed open. Anniversary Game 3: The Curse of the Koloss

Yeah, The game should start roughly around then. That's when I have the most free time to get all of the PMs and stuff sent out. That is definitely the reason. It has nothing whatsoever to do with me possibly being a Mistwraith; no matter what anyone tells you.- 1403 replies

I don't know if it would work for this game due to it being Resistance based, but as older players will know, I found out that there is an actual mathematical equation for figuring out the typical number of Eliminators in a game. If you scroll down in the link to Game Theory, it'll give you the equation. These numbers change with the addition of roles and the GM should modify them to account for factors like that most of us are veteran players with regards to each other. But, it's a good base. For this game in particular, I'd go with something closer to about a fifth of the player base. So if you have 20 people, roughly 4 Elims (give or take a few depending on other factors). This gives the Village somewhat decent odds of getting a non-Elim mission while still giving the Elims a decent chance of getting one of their members added to a mission. The one thing I would do though is expand the number of players on a mission. As it stands, if an Elim is in a mission, they don't have much incentive to vote "No," as that narrows the field down to only three people. If the people on the mission is closer to 5-6 players (or say about a quarter of the player base, depending on the number of players), then an Elim isn't entirely revealing themselves just to kill one person. I'd also consider getting rid of the limited number of missions and make it a typical outnumber situation (or at least set it based on the number of players, as Joe suggested). Because, as it stands now, the Village just needs one all group village to succeed and then they can continue using that same group until they get their 5 missions and there's little that can be done about it. I'd leave out any additional roles and just use the Missions as the Villagers' way of tracking and finding Elims. Just some ideas. @Wyrmhero would be a great person to ask (and read his post game thoughts from his game) to really round it out. Since they've run something similar, I'll bet they'd have a good idea of what works and what doesn't.

Might I suggest something that's not really game related? How about, rather than using the widely known type of factions, go with something else? I would love another Resistance style game (I didn't get to play in the last one after all), but why make the focus on something so prominent in the Cosmere? Why not focus on a section that hasn't been explored yet? For example, rather than Sons of Honor and Ghostbloods, why not make it more personal; like between factions in Elantris before it was restored? Or the Skaa Resistance against the Nobles Houses before the events of The Final Empire? Or even the Hallandren invasions into Idris before Warbreaker. These situations are hardly explored in recent games, but I think they hold a lot of potential. We tend to ignore the details and focus on the over-arching story a lot recently. Bringing it back down to individual worlds and events has the added effect of bringing a level of gravitas to it as well because it's contained. When the entire Cosmere is the focus, what happens on one, puny, world is insignificant. But it's not to the people living it. Sanderson writes his stories this way. He doesn't focus on the Cosmere, but on the stories within it. Why should we focus so much on the entire Cosmere? Just an idea I had and not just for your game. I'd love to see a lot more games that focus on the specific worlds Sanderson created for us.

Anniversary Game 3: The Curse of the Koloss

Hero is spot on, as usual and those are some great CRs! I specifically put in a few CRs that would be relatively easy like the ones Hero is suggesting, like the Jaist, for people that aren't typically that much into RP. If you don't come up with a character, I'll come up with one for you (and people that don't come up with their own tend to get stuck with generic or unpleasant ones, just fyi [this goes for you too, Silverblade!]). I need one for if/when you die. No person is just a name. They are a conglomerate of all the things that they do. Their job, their personality, their thoughts and feelings, the way they interact with people. Without these things, I can't write a character's story. I might as well just write, "_____ was stabbed." for how much depth there is. Besides, why play a game in a specific setting if you don't get to interact and play around with that setting some, eh? A CR isn't exactly a character in it's own right- though there are a few one the list that can become the majority of the character. For example- being a Kleptomaniac, as I stated in the description, doesn't tell us what kind of Klepto you are. A CR is more of a characteristic of your character; not the whole of it. So, if you want, I'd suggest going with one of Hero's suggestions. They should be easy enough without getting into full blown RP mode.- 1403 replies

I'd put that into the same category as Handicapped. Just instead of only missing one eye or limb or whatever, you have a total lack of vision instead. Since in that one, you just have to reference your handicap in each post and it doesn't stipulate how you do so in any way, I think just going with Handicapped (Blindness) would be easier on you as is.- 1403 replies

Anniversary Game 3: The Curse of the Koloss
Metacognition replied to Metacognition's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Depends on your level of involvement. It can either take up around a half hour a day or it could take up most of your time, if you let it. You'll at least want enough time to be able to read through everyone's posts made during a day and enough time for you to make one or two of your own. I'd say that it typically would take around an hour or so to do that if you're only checking in once a day. Close. I like the idea of the CR. Not every CR should be a boon, in my opinion. Just needs a bit of a tweak. Useless - You just can't seem to do anything right. At this point, you've come to accept the fact that you'll probably never amount to much and that you're useless. In every post, you must show yourself either failing at some task or show yourself never starting a task, due to you knowing that it'll fail. How's that?- 1403 replies

Anniversary Game 3: The Curse of the Koloss

1. Yes it does. 2. Yes it is. And everyone always says that, but that never winds up being the case. 3. Smoking is not a Roleblock. The Emotional Allomancy, whether a Rioter or Soother, is prevented; not stopped before it happens. Thus, a Rioter's vote would be canceled even though they were unable to change their target's vote. 4. A Seeker will get back a "undetectable" reading if they target a Smoker or a Smoker's target. 5. The Spiked do indeed get a Night Kill. It does take up the player's action for the Night though. 6. Yes. Everyone can use any of their abilities on Night 0. So, if you're lucky enough, a Seeker could find a Spiked on the first night. 7. See above. Everyone can use any of their abilities Night 0. 8. Mistwraiths don't really have mouths so to speak and chewing is probably not something they do either- err, I mean I guess we'll just have to wait and see! He most likely would; which should make for some interesting interactions between you and Elenion then, huh? Fake Edit: See? It already begins. I'll allow it as long as you wind up showing the build up (like research or examination or the like) in the posts between theories. They can't just come out of thin air after all. He hasn't provided a CR, whether one of his own (to be approved by me) or one on the list. Thus why I can't count it. I could see STICK as a possible CR, given the right circumstances, but I won't count it unless he can define it in a way that correlates with the given examples. For example: STICK- You are a stick. YOU are a stick. Stick you are. In every post, you must talk as a Stick. From here, you could use something similar to the example I gave of Shivertongue using High Imperial. "I am Stick." I AM Stick." You see the difference? One requires a bit more thought put into it. The other requires saying only two words.... I won't count it unless you make at least a little bit of effort. I don't feel like I'm asking for too much since I came up with even this on the fly.- 1403 replies

Anniversary Game 3: The Curse of the Koloss
Metacognition replied to Metacognition's topic in Sanderson Elimination
I like the Bard CR idea. That's a good example of a Cosmetic Role that someone could come up with (you're not limited to our list) and would likely be approved. You'll notice that there are no repercussions to not using your Cosmetic Role. That's partially due to exactly what you're talking about. If you're going back and forth with someone with only a few short quips, then mentioning it every time would be tedious. I mean, there's ways to do it (like quipping and then building up your character's backstory some more or developing the story in other ways by making things happen around your character or using the setting in a way that influences your character; need I go on?), but not exactly necessary. What wouldn't really fly is if you quipped with a person and wrote a huge essay about something else, quipped with the person again and wrote another long bit about the game, and so on and never played around with your CR. That would be unacceptable, as you're sidestepping the heart of what the CR is there for.- 1403 replies

The Curse of the Koloss The Villagers watched in horror as it had done a thousand times before, the village of Tyrian Falls coalesced from the Mist around them. The buildings would change. The seasons would change. Even the people would change. What never changed was the fact that they were trapped in an endless cycle of bloodshed and destruction. As the sun crested the horizon, burning away the last wisps of mist and causing the village to finish solidifying, they could tell that, this time, it was late Fall. The ash falling from the sky was swirled about by the slightly crisp winds. Slowly, the memories of all the deaths and betrayals faded from the villagers’ minds. The only time that they remember that they had slaughtered each other hundreds of times over was when things would reset as they just had. Then, it would all come rushing back to assault them anew. But ignorance is bliss and they never remembered for long. Never long enough to realize what was happening. Never long enough to remember that there were Koloss coming for them. Never long enough to prevent it. Each time, they had to rediscover these things anew, including the fact that there were Spiked amongst them; plotting everyone’s destruction…. Wow. Three years. You guys are insatiable! How many people must you all kill before you’re satisfied? While the rest of the world was lamenting about 2016, I’d say that we all had a pretty awesome year with some amazing games. And it’s all thanks to all of you, our players. Thank you so much for signing up and playing and making these games the best around! Before we get into the rules for the AG this year (and even if you’ve read them from a previous game, you’re going to want to go over them again this time), an announcement of just one of the things that we’ll be changing for the upcoming year*. One thing that we noticed over this last year is that we’ve had a lot of Non-Sanderson related games this past year. We’ve traveled to Westeros, Temerant, Japan, Alera, Kanto, Mars, and Cyrodiil; though there might be others that I missed. This isn’t exactly a bad thing. We like being able to introduce people to new settings and this a great way to do it. But we’d like to focus this upcoming year to getting back to our roots. Games have gotten increasingly complex as well as the number of Non-Sanderson related works. So we’re limiting the number of Non-Sanderson games for the upcoming year to 3-4. This way, we’ll still be able to explore new series and new settings, but we’ll be able to really build the SE lore as well. And we’ve come up with a pretty fun way of deciding which Non-Sanderson games will be run during the next year, if I do say so myself! For those of you who either played LG2 or have read it, you’ll know that there was an addition in that game called Cosmetic Roles. These roles didn’t affect the game, but provided some fun ideas for people to play around with. We’ve expanded on the ones in that game and added them to this AG. Every player will not only need to sign up with a character, but they also either have to pick a cosmetic role from the list below or, pending GM approval, create one of their own. The players that followed their Cosmetic Role the best (chosen by the Mods) will be able to choose which Non-Sanderson related games will be ran in the upcoming year. They don’t have to use it right away. They could hold onto it for a fun game that they see in the Art of Game Creation thread or even run one of their own choosing. And that’s it! If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. On to AG 3! The Curse of the Koloss. *Keep an eye on the Q&A thread for more. We have some ideas we’ll be running by you guys that we think will greatly increase everyone’s enjoyment of these games. Oh no! Koloss have begun advancing on your little town, Tyrian Falls! Since The Lord Ruler died, they seem to be acting with a mind of their own. Unfortunately for you, your town is a way point between Fadrex City and Luthadel. This means you have a stockpile of metals. Perhaps that's why they targeted you in the first place. On the other hand, you have a large collection of metals. So you might be able to hold them off. ….Unless there’s someone (or a conspiracy of someones) out to undermine your defenses. Somehow, before the Koloss arrive, you have to rid your town of these dissenters; those that are Spiked. Until then, you won't be able to mount an effective defense for your town. If you fail, everyone dies, so you better not fail! Factions: Some people within the town have been hiding a few secrets; some of them are Mistings, so you have help in your battle versus the forces of Ruin. Although some of them may be Spiked instead. Why can't anything be easy? Roles: A new addition to the AG, this year everyone will also choose a Cosmetic Role when they create a character for the game. A Cosmetic Role does not affect the mechanics of the game in any way. They are there mainly for RP and entertainment purposes. If you’re not a big roleplaying person, that’s okay. There are ways to do a Cosmetic Role without a lot of RP or even just a couple sentences, so I don’t expect this to be too much of a burden for anyone. You can either choose one from the list we have below or you can create your own, pending GM approval of your Cosmetic Role. Have fun! Cosmetic Roles: We'll be starting on a Night round. This is due to the fact that that was how it was before and I think it will give people a chance to establish some RP before the game actually starts (which always helps make the write ups better, IMO). Also, this should avoid a lot of the typical Day 1 issues of people feeling like they have nothing to go off of on the first day. Order of Actions for the Night will be: -Smoker -Seeker -Lurcher -Coinshot/Kills Days will be 48 hours long and Nights will be 24 hours long. Rollover should be close to 11PM-12AM EST. No hints will be given in the write ups. Allegiance and Roles will be reveal upon death. And we're ready to begin! Sign ups will last a week, so we'll be starting on Jan 9th. Will this be the time that the curse is finally broken? Let's find out! Good luck! Quick Links:

Long Game 29: A Mote in Adonalsium's Eye
Metacognition replied to Seonid's topic in Sanderson Elimination
This shouldn't be an issue unless it's one for you personally. We've run games during basically every holiday in the calendar year with the idea that those holidays are coming up and they've all worked out just fine. There's even been some fun play with the situation that it's a holiday! In fact, the AG typically starts just around now and we're putting it off a bit for your game. So unless there's some extenuating reason why you can't, it'd be preferable that you follow through. Trying to move games around after they've already been started due to GM complications (which is part of why we have the GM PM to start with; to catch these types of scenarios) would be an incredibly convoluted mess, IMO. The players know that they signed up for a game around the holidays and, as such, should be prepared to being able to check in during the holidays. I'd even go so far to say that some signed up knowing that they'd have the additional free time. Thus, it's all on you and what you can handle. So if You need to, fine. But, overall, I wouldn't recommend it.- 984 replies
