It appears that we've got two teams forming. What's your opinion on their compositions? Well, they've rather strategically let their Ballintain players lead the offense. Of course, that means the Ballintain players are taking a heavy beating. Pete and Newt are going head to head. It's looking dicey for both of them. And Pete takes down Newt! What an impressive Line of Vigor. Wait, what's this? Looks like Newt managed to take down Pete as well. He ricocheted a Line of Vigor off of 2 Lines of Warding, hitting Pete in a weak spot. It's a shame that these talented players have been eliminated. Still, the field continues to get narrower. Only 6 people left. It's sure to be a nail-biter. This round ends on Tuesday January 15th at 4:00 PM EST. Player List:

Wow Ron, just look at Drake Marshall go! He's really putting that Ballintain to good use. Indeed. Just look at those beautiful lines of Vigor, slicing through Matist Rist's final line of defenses. I think he might be a favorite to win this, but what's this? Jeeves has attacked him from behind. Drake is out of the game! Oh my, we were not expecting that turn of events. And now Jeeves is out as well! That's the price to pay for devoting everything to attacking. Snip is learning that lesson the hard way. He was able to take out Amil last round, but that left him exposed. He's down for the count. And with that, only eight Rithmatists remain. Who will take home the win? This round will end on Monday, January 14th at 4:00 PM EST. And as always, get in your actions. Player List:

Oh my goodness, things are really heating up. Ron, give us a play-by-play. Amil is desperately fighting back against Elysian's assault. Elysian's putting up some serious pressure, but, oh no! He gets shot from behind by Loren Menza. Tough luck there. Amil breathes a sigh of relief, but what's this? His circle's been broken as well! Someone sneaked in and eliminated him! Fate can change at a moment's notice. Speaking of which, it looks like someone took out Loren. The eliminations are spiraling out of control. Tendin Throk and Rose Shol have both been eliminated. This is getting crazy. Bad news Tom. It looks like Vao Temer's Defense was a bit dodgy. A stray LIne of Vigor broke it. He should have been paying more attention. This has been an avalanche of chalk dust. I can't wait to see what happens next. Let's see how the survivors recuperate after this. This round will end at 4:00 PM EST on Sunday January 13. Get your actions in folks, I've already killed one person from the inactivity filter. Player List:

And we're off. The students are frantically drawing their defenses. Ron, what do you think about their choices. Well, it looks like the students are taking their time, making sure to cover their weak points. The downside of that is... Speak of the devil. It looks like Miffed was taking too long drawing, and that led to an early ambush. Look, on the other side of the field! Apla yer, who was so confident going into this fight, has been eliminated! I guess pride comes before a fall. It looks like the players have developed some secret codes to... Oh wait! It looks like that wild chalking has been eliminated. How did it even get on the field? I don't know Tom, but with only three players out. It's still anybody's game. This round will end in 24 hours, at 4:00 PM EST on Saturday, January 12. Be sure to get your actions in. Player List:

On secret codes: Before anyone gets ahead of themselves, it's important to remember this rule from the general rules thread. Basically, don't use outside sites to hash and encode messages. Flavor wise, you're yelling at each other in the arena. Using code words is fine. One idea would be having the first letter in your first word correspond to a player number. I'm sure you guys can come up with even more interesting ways to conceal your intent. However, I must stress that using outside programs is forbidden. Use your own talents, and everything will be fine.

Well folks, 21 fantastic Rithmatists are entering the arena, but only 1 will emerge as the champion. Tom, the excitement in here is deafening. Can you talk a bit about the strategy that's involved here? It's all about defense Ron. Do you play it safe and risk an imperfect circle, or do you rush into battle, hoping to overwhelm your opponents? It's always a tough decision. And we certainly can't forget about politics. Making alliances is crucial to surviving the early stages. Still, there's nothing preventing sudden betrayals. That just makes it interesting. Indeed. As a reminder, in your role PM, please respond with what defense you would like to draw. For 48 hours, and only for these 48 hours, PMs are open. Make sure to include both myself and Alvron in them. This round lasts 48 hours, and will end on Thursday, January 10, 2018 at 4:00 PM EST. Good luck. Player List:

Everyone has 1 life. If you get hit, you're dead. Defending only cancels out one attack. Ballintain defense makes essentially two attacks. You would still lose a life, even if you defend against it. Similarly, if you are attacked by two different people and defend, you still will lose a life. There is a mechanism in place in case the game stalls. I would prefer not to use it, but if no one dies for two cycles in a row, I'll start using it. That's the only hidden rule. Please don't. The mechanism would be activated before the end of the game, and people will start dying one way or another. In the event of simultaneous death, ties are broken by who got the most kills.

Greetings everyone, and welcome to Armedius Academy's 35th annual Melee! I'm your host, Tom Middleton. And I'm your co-commentator, Ron Howard. You can smell the scent of chalk dust in the air, eh, Ron? Absolutely, Tom. Armedius's finest Rithmatists will be taking the field shortly. This should be a fight for the ages. Indeed. Each and every one of these students has a shot at the gold. However, there can only be one winner. Ron, would you mind going over the rules for anyone just joining us? Of course Tom. The Rules: This is a free-for-all game, which means there are no teams this game. Your goal is to be the last player standing. In the event of a tie, the player with the most kills wins. This game takes place in two phases: the Preparation phase, and then up to 9 Rounds in the Game phase. Preparation Phase: In the preparation phase, students decide on what strategy to use, and form temporary alliances. This phase will last 48 hours, and begins once the game starts. In this phase, PMs are open. Feel free to contact anyone you like to talk strategy. Please include both myself and the impartial moderator when making these PMs. In addition, you must choose a defense to use in the main event. These will be explained later. Rounds: After the Preparation Phase, Round 1 will start. Each Round lasts 24 hours, and PMs are closed during them. Each round, you can submit one of these three actions: Line of Forbiddance: Defend a player, usually yourself, from one attack Line of Vigor: Attack another player Line of Making: Swarm a player with chalklings. During the next round, they will be unable to take any actions. Defense: During the Preparation Phase, you may choose one of the following Ballintain Defense: You cannot draw Lines of Forbiddance, but your LInes of Vigor deal double damage Matson Defense: Choose a player when you draw this defense. You learn what Defense that player is using. Taylor Defense: You cannot take any actions during Round 1. If you survive the first round, you gain an extra life. Miscellaneous: @Alvron will be our impartial moderator. The game will be starting Tuesday, January 8th at 4 PM Eastern Standard Time. Well put Ron. Let's sit back and watch as the contestants enter the stadium. Player List: Quick Links:

Mid-Range Game 32: The Blight Encroaches
Sart replied to Fifth Scholar's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Ugh... I feel like I should say something, but there's not much to say. Even if we assume that Mark or Aman are Elims, there's probably two others in the game. Unfortunately, I trust most of the people left alive. We know Steeldancer is cleared, but it can't be as simple as Joe and Karn being the last two. That just feels too obvious to me. I'm starting to get paranoid of everyone. Not sure what else to say, and remember to defend.- 583 replies

Mid-Range Game 32: The Blight Encroaches
Sart replied to Fifth Scholar's topic in Sanderson Elimination
We've got an hour left, and we have a bandwagon forming against Drought. Quite frankly, I don't like lynching people who have voted on Elims. On the other hand, it could have been a distancing tactic, since Brightness was getting lynched regardless of his vote. Still, he apologized in his vote on BR. If you wanted to project strong evidence of your village membership, apologizing when voting on a teammate seems illogical. That seems like something a conflicted villager would do, not an Eliminator. There's also the Mark vs Aman debate happening. I haven't been able to shake my evil gut read of Aman. His posts have just seemed off to me. Why quote literally every post of your opponent, and then not vote for them? I've never known Aman to wait for a response. That just reads like he's trying to force a lynch without being part of the train. It's just too sketchy for me. Plus, I don't agree with his logic. There's a non-zero chance that the Warriors are completely village. I dislike giving Thug roles to Elims as a GM, so a doc full of those type of roles might also be free of Elims. If I had to choose between the two of them, I would vote Aman, but no one else is voting for him. I don't want to vote for either of the lynch candidates. Thankfully, I was ninja'd by Steeldancer while I was writing this. I agree with his points about Mr. Doctor, and since I don't want the other two to die, I'll vote along with him. I should read through his posts more, but this late in the cycle, this is more of a protest vote.- 583 replies

Mid-Range Game 32: The Blight Encroaches
Sart replied to Fifth Scholar's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Okay, so I want to make sure I've got a vote down before I forget. I think Amanuensis is an Elim. My reasoning comes from the kill selection. The Eliminators have been targeting people who haven't been active, which is odd. Normally you want to kill the trusted villagers first, to prevent discussion. However, some older players think that harms the health of the games, and so chose to target those who aren't contributing. It's the equivalent of playing on hard mode. Aman is one of the most experienced players on here, and I recall him doing this in a previous game. In addition, he was also inactive on Day 2, where most of the active players must have defended. Thus, he seems to be a likely candidate for being evil.- 583 replies

The secret project is now out, and it's free to read. Children of the Nameless is a novella set on Innistrad, one of the planes featured in Magic the Gathering. It's Brandon's longest novella to date, and does not require any knowledge of the setting to enjoy it. https://media.wizards.com/2018/downloads/novella/Children_of_the_Nameless.pdf Feel free to discuss the story to your hearts content in here.

Mid-Range Game 32: The Blight Encroaches
Sart replied to Fifth Scholar's topic in Sanderson Elimination
I barely got on 2 minutes before rollover to defend, but I didn't actually vote. I noticed the bandwagon, but there was nothing I could do about it then. So much for being active... I disagree with calling this vote a bandwagon. For most of the cycle, it was very closely tied, with a large spread of votes. It's only late into the cycle that it tipped so drastically. I'm slightly suspicious of Drought, as his defense on Furamirionind seemed a bit like pocketing to me. Then we had a slew of last minute votes. Yes, I understand not liking vote manipulation, but that was ridiculous. I'd especially like more reasoning from Kidpen. A one-liner is always annoying.- 583 replies

Mid-Range Game 32: The Blight Encroaches
Sart replied to Fifth Scholar's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Okay, still trying to catch up with this game. I've got finals this week, so don't expect too much activity, but this is a good break from studying. If I understand the rules correctly, to defend the outer-ring, we needed to muster a defense of 8. One role (al'Lan) can contribute 2 defense, but all other roles contribute 1 defense. This requires using an action. There is also an evil role that reduces the camp's defense by 1. Since the outer ring held, we can conclude that at least 7 people did an action that actively helped the village. Therefore, I'm going to do something stupid. I will not vote for anyone who voted today. We're more likely, at least in my view, to catch an Eliminator by going after the inactives. That may be naive, but it should be an interesting strategy. At the very least, I believe that Padan Fain is inactive. I would have taken a free kill any day of the week, but instead they left Snipexe alive. That just reads as laziness.- 583 replies
