I'm pretty sure that they do, in fact, manipulate specific surges to generate the effects that they do, given that the Surges on Roshar are the powers of creation.

About as similar as, say, a longbow and a Uzi? What I mean by that is that they both manipulate Surges, but while the ancient ones appear to require training and are quite versatile, the modern ones are much simpler to use but more limited in the ability of each fabrial. Modern fabrial science feels like steampunk (gempunk?), honestly, while the ancient ones have more of a "magical-artifact-of-mystery-and-wonder" vibe.

The metal is a catalyst that is consumed in the reaction, a kind of molecular gate. Duralumin catalyses that, making all the molecular gates open at once in a chain reaction triggered by burnt duralumin and burnt other metal/burnt nicrosil and burnt other metal. Now, I have no idea how this works with atium.

Do we have confirmation that Ashyn and Braise are not in fact moons of Roshar, and any oddities caused by this are simply not mentioned in the Shadows world because they're commonplace

I'm thinking that recent and ancient fabrials are as different as longbows and Uzi's. Same general principle, but massively different use, power, skill set, etc.

Seriously, I'm sure I heard somewhere that the modern trilogy is going to be about a misting SWAT team chasing down a serial killer Mistborn (nice reversal of Kelsier's antics anyone?), and the main character is going to be a nicroburster. I've never considered the effects of Compounding + nicrobursting before...

No, but I'm assuming that the fabrial she uses is one of the ancient ones that replicate KR abilities directly, and probably have to have infused and "tuned" gems to work properly. Edit: ninja moogle

Yeah. I'm guessing that the Honorspren ruling body in the Cognitive are going to track her down and try to sever her Nahel Bond, before dragging her back to the cognitive for incarceration. I think the ability to kill spren with a Shardblade is going to be important, since I just described the plot of The Bourne Identity in the SA.

I think Growth is the Surge, but ReGrowth specifically refers to the use of that Surge for healing. Since she's using a fabrial, then it can probably only perform ReGrowth, hence the terminology.
