Long Game 68: Studies of Ashyn
Araris Valerian replied to The_God_King's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Why? GM PMs tend to contain win condition information, which necessarily involves the name of the opposing faction. Check your PM again. Is the name of the opposing faction there? There are also other ways to find out, like asking the GM in a doc. Don't use meta stuff, because lynches based on meta information are bad IMO, and trusts based on them can be wrong and lead to losing the game. I'm pretty sure one of the AGs went horribly wrong because a timezone thing led to Wilson trusting Claincy, atlhough I'd have to check again to make sure. It also just breaks the game, and makes it less fun for everyone (or at least for people who like doing analysis). It's like in One Night Werewolf, where you don't say anything if you heard someone moving their card around during the night. -

I would disagree. I thought that lynching Illwei would be worse than lynching an essentially random person. Unfortunately, I didn’t change my vote until near the end of the cycle, so the difference was marginal. So you should conclude that of myself, Illwei, and the vote manipulator (who could be Illwei I suppose), at least one of us is not an elim. I personally consider it somewhat likely that the vote manip was elim, which means that one of myself/Illwei is village. So IMO, there is a stronger negative connection between us than not. And besides, I’d be happy to lynch Illwei this cycle because of my suspicions of the vote manip (which I already briefly mentioned). -

I’m think you and Mint are connected, or at least there is a stronger link between you two than two random players. Generally that’s an elim thing, since villagers tend to be rather paranoid, especially early on. -

Have you now concluded that there is no actual pressure from poke votes and thus they are useless? Thoughts: I'm still pretty happy to vote for most people. The vote manip last cycle makes me mildly more suspicious of Illwei. Seeing as there are already 3 votes on Pyro, I'll vote for Mist. I agree with Sart about the vote manip comments. I think in a V/E lynch that is close, if the elims have vote manip then they are likely to use it. Perhaps they would in a V/V lynch as well, but I'd say that's less likely. And the chances of a given random person having vote manip that they are able to use D1 to save themselves seems slim to me. -

I think early game elim kills either try to take out people who are confirmed/strongly read as village, or that haven’t participated enough to give the village information upon their death. Since I didn’t see any strong village reads from anyone, I’m guessing the latter was their motivation. Although it could have to do with a PM he had, those can be dangerous. -

The reason was that it was one of the only actions I could take to (partly) prevent a lynch on Illwei. I'd have been pretty happy to vote on just about anyone with 2 votes at that point (except Kasimir, who I suspect of voting himself specifically so I wouldn't vote on him). We're all guilty until proven innocent. This sounds like a gut read to me, which is generally the justification for D1 votes. I'm not sure why this would seem off to you. -

Ashbringer hasn’t made any accusations against me (except maybe the 2 hours thing, which was not meant to be an exact number by me). -

Okay, I'm not a fan of the votes on Illwei, because they are entirely for metagame reasons (well, not necessarily all of them, but Straw's was probably prompted by the other votes). I think that's in poor form and also makes the lynch rather useless. So I'm going to switch from Ash to Mist. Alvron, I summon thee! Let the Gods of Luck and Chance decide! -

Just popping in to say that I was thinking of moving my vote on Ash to someone with one or more other votes, but seeing as Matrim has followed my vote, I'm going to stick with it, at least for a bit longer. IMO since there's not that much time in the cycle, people should probably switch from mechanic discussion to lynch discussion. -

I think I saw this being used as a strategy on Mafia Universe. Each cycle, everyone would post "I tracked X player and saw Y alignment". It is more effective if everyone agrees with it though, and I think there could be issues with the elims ruling out who is/isn't a scanner by the accuracy of the "scans". I don't really want to bother with figuring that all out this game (especially given that there is a reasonable chance of no alignment scanner). School is starting up for me, so I probably won't be quite as prolific this first week of the game as I have in recent games. One of the best ways to "unblack" the blackout is to start lynching people! I'll start with one on Ashbringer. Why would fake claims be unhelpful? (Wrote this post 2 hours ago but forgot to post, not going to check right now how bad I got ninja'd). -

Well, assuming this game starts in about a week, I'll not be able to play. I'd appreciate a link to the spec doc though. -
Long Game 67: The Road to Urithiru
Araris Valerian replied to Straw's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Thanks . Although I think in a large part the ease of our victory was due to general village inactivity. Striker getting lynched turned out to be rather helpful, and then after a couple of mislynches I feel like the village lost its confidence, since my proposal for the lynch was accepted (by at least enough villagers) basically through the end of the game at that point. Thanks to @Straw for GMing! This game was very fun to play, and it was nice to be an elim again. I also greatly enjoyed playing with @Magestar, @Frozen Mint, @Lord_Silberfarben, @xinoehp512, and @Zillah, although we could have cleaned things up a little faster if the latter two had been more active. My general comments on the game: First and foremost I think the activity levels were pretty awful. I know several people had IRL stuff going on, but some people sort of just vanished, and didn’t even put anything in blue text (some of that may have been due to IRL stuff too, and that is totally cool as well). I just find it slightly unlikely that so many people had so much life stuff come out of nowhere right after D2. The more players that are posting in a game, in general, the more fun it is for everyone. My team ended up killing off a bunch of inactives just to keep the game from going dead before we won officially, but that doesn’t feel very good to do as an elim, because you aren’t playing optimally (kind of the exact opposite). So I guess, if you play again, please try and post at least once per cycle, even if it’s just to say that you are still catching up. I think the game probably would have been balanced at 6 elims, but it’s hard to tell with the activity. With 7 and a double vote manip, I think we may have had a little too much game ending potential. I’d be curious to hear thoughts from others about this. The village perception on the role distribution this game was also kind of weird, although I’m not sure it impacted the game. Several people assumed either all roles or all surges would be present, but that is the exact sort of role distribution that GMs try to avoid. My advice: if you can guess at a role distribution D1, it’s probably wrong. Thanks everyone for playing, and I look forward to killing you all later! -

Magestar is definitely evil (but I don't have a second vote lying around, so bold will have to do). -

Matrim was the only player with a known role. Seems pretty obvious to me why anyone would kill him. And turns out, he had a potentially game-changing role. -

I’m pretty convinced that Orlok is elim at this point. Still not sure why people suspect me. Also, with only 1 charge, Matrim could only protect once in 3 cycles. -

Even that doesn't work, if we are assuming an elim Windrunner. They share a surge with Bondsmiths. I don't think the distribution is anything that we would be likely to predict. -

Araris Valerian replied to Straw's topic in Sanderson Elimination
I find this extraordinarily unlikely. If all 10 orders were present, the the game would end with 20/21 players having roles, once enough squiring happened. I'd wager 2 KR's left, if we grant the elims a vote manip one, then we also have the person who opened PMs once, who may also be an elim. -

Araris Valerian replied to Straw's topic in Sanderson Elimination
I'm not so sure that the elims have vote manip though, because they likely would have used it to attempt to save Striker. But I also can't see any reason for a villager to do either of the vote removals that happened. I suppose since we have a Highstorm tomorrow, they could just be using their charges for no reason. -

Araris Valerian replied to Straw's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Well, I can't fault you for a gut read, but I'd be cautious about getting reads from PMs, because elims can say things in them that they aren't accountable to the thread to. Could you elaborate here? Also, @Devotary of Spontaneity, it would be nice for you to post some thoughts on the lynch. -

What have Pyro/Devotary done to earn a village read? I still have a rather null read on both of them, and at this stage of the game I feel that merits a lynch. -

Long Game 67: The Road to Urithiru
Araris Valerian replied to Straw's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Sorry, that came out a little wrong (especially since I followed it by listing 3 names). To clarify, those are all people I suspect, and I’d be fairly comfortable moving my vote to any of them. I wasn’t choosing randomly. I’ve mentioned Pyro and Devotary before as suspicious for their lurking. If you look at all the lynches, there aren’t any players alive that were ever in danger of being lynched. Thus, the elims can’t really have had any incentive to get seriously involved in the lynch. Consequently, I kind of want to lynch a lurker this cycle. Mage had some stuff last cycle that I read as pretty elimy, although I’ll have to go back for the specifics. I did mention it during last cycle briefly though. Hasn’t everyone who voted at all this game been involved in a bunch of mislynches and votes on villagers? I was pretty against lynching either Ventyl or TJ (backed up by my vote), while I’d wager the elims would have been happy to let a V!KR/V!KR lynch go through. I think you might be picking up on the fact that I’m not afraid to get my hands dirty in these games, even if that means a bunch of well-meant mislynches. I also just realized that of all the people who voted on Striker D1, you are the only one still living. I think the only reason I’ve been trusting you up to this point is because of your reveal of being Ventyl’s squire, but as the game drags on without catching any elims, that becomes worth a bit less. Anyway, what do you think of a lynch on Pyro/Devotary/Mage?
