I'm sure he would only give them untainted blades.

And a hearty Welcome to you as well, mistrunner. Always glad to have a new face...err...voice...err...here with us.

Definitely worthwhile. I have not played the games, but they are rather light on plot anyways. The way I did, I read the first book, read the wikipedia articles for the first and second games and then read the second book. That carried me through just fine and I did not feel lost in the first book for not having read the plot of the first game beforehand. I mean, really the plot of the first game is way thin.

Theory - on Oathpacts, Desolations and Recreances
Shardlet replied to 11thorderknight's topic in Stormlight Archive
I suspect that it is not a causal relationship and that both are effects of the same primary cause. -
Old is a relative term. the events of TWoK take place 4500 years after the Heralds bailed. I think several thousand years certainly qualifies as old.

Actually the spren does speak to Ym to alert him of the arrival of the Shadowman.

Theory: How Gavilar got the Evil Sphere of Doom
Shardlet replied to Lightflame's topic in Stormlight Archive
I'm not sure how you would be able to cut it to have an infinite number of facets or faces. I assume you are speaking of a spear and essentially identifying each point on the surface of the sphere as being a facet. But this wouldn't really fit since a facet is a two dimensional plane. I also don't see the number of facets correlating with the power level of the gem, but rather a configuration of facets providing a particular effect in much the same way that in allomancy the metal focuses or filters the power rather than actually provides it. -
How do you account for the creation of regular shardblades if they did not come from the KR?

Theory - on Oathpacts, Desolations and Recreances
Shardlet replied to 11thorderknight's topic in Stormlight Archive
Makes more sense now. I think you need to account for the reintroduction of surgebinding though to fully address it. -
Yeah, i didn't really pick up on that. I can see why you might go there 11th, but I think that that is a bit of a leap at this point.

He didn't correct travel to transportation. He said both, but seemed to indicate that transportation was better than travel. Depends a lot on Peter. Brandon said he describes the effect and Peter does the science and math associations and then they decide.

If you are looking to get a code handed to you, make sure you get to the signing early so you can be in the front of the line. He only brings a limited amount with him. Doesn't have to be a costume though. Last night, people got codes for the right kind t-shirt (someone got one for a bridge 4 shirt and another got one for a 'ninjas can't catch you shirt'). Wetlandernw came in a nice conservative black skirt and a white button-up shirt with a white cotton glove on her left hand. She and Brandon decided that she would be a master-servant and she got a code. But, again, make sure you get there early. I got one for being amusing. Brandon did not have a chance to hide codes in the bookstore since the event was not in the hosting bookstore itself. He said something about figuring out a way to hide them and I called out that he could hide one in my backpack.

The mechanism for the formation of the plains in Dragonsteel appears to be very different than the mechanism on Roshar. I have been told some info on the Dragonsteel plains and it seems that there they were formed natutally, whereas in Roshar they were formed by a massive release of energy.

Ooh! I just recalled something else that was super-cool. Some of you may have heard of wetlandernw here or on the Tor rereads. Anyway, part of the answers to one of her questions (which I will be providing all of to you soon) was that there were some spren on Roshar prior to the arrival of Cultivation and Honor. These spren resulted from some power left behind by Adonalsium. Whether this was a snafu of creation, inadvertant neglecting of a bit of dropped power, or some intentional investiture was unclear. But it appears that spren are a key feature of how Roshar handles loose power of creation.

Ok, the recording will give us some further understanding on Elscallers. Brandon elaborated on the name by saying something like 'E...L...S...Callers' or something like that. I was focused on Callers v. Scholars (which he did not clarify. PAFO much?), so I don't recall offhand what he said precisely, I'll get the info to you soon (not until late tonight at the earliest). Some info on Surface Tension, it will not be called surface tension in the end. Brandon described the ability (during Hoser's questions) and surface tension was just Brandon's sort of idea of what you might call it. The info is cool, but Hoser has http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/4258-questions-for-seattle-signing-1014/?p=67836'>posted it since it was his question. I am virtually 100% certain it will not be called surface tension in the end though. Hoser also got us the name for another order, but Brandon would not indicate which position it was in. Another interesting bit of info came up about the WoR cover art. The cover you have seen will not be the cover of WoR. Michael Whelan has redrawn it twice so far. Brandon said Kaladin looks very different now (though he did not know if the lame collar on the uniform is gone) and he does not think that the gemheart (yes, Brandon said it was a gemheart) is in the picture anymore. Brandon read Jasnah from WoR and the same scene from SoS. So nothing new on the readings front. I have about 7 questions I asked and those answers will be forthcoming (before the recordings of pertinent bits are posted).

If you are concerned about confusion, when speaking of shardplate and shardblades, don't use the term 'shard' or 'shards'. If you just really don't want to write it out all the time, use the terms 'plate' and 'blade'. Just reserve shard for speaking of shards of Adonalsium. If you would like to particular speak of the consciousness which is in possession of the shard, just take a few extra seconds to make that clear. Most of the confusion I have seen comes from people simply not taking the time to use clear terminology and grammar in their posts. Obviously, some leeway ought to be given to our members who speak a language other than English as their primary language.

I am selfishly developing my own line of questions. Some should give us some broad food for thought. The only SA questions I have are specific to the Thrill. I will likely post my answers tomorrow morning.

Why do people think Shallan has a shardblade?
Shardlet replied to ddleg's topic in Stormlight Archive
Actually, Brandon doesn't care for the term Shardholder to be used this way. He prefers to refer to both the shard and the person holding it together as a shard, but allows fans license to use whatever convention they like. Quote My own convention is to use 'shard' with a lower-case 's' to designate the shard itself and to use 'Shard' with a capital 'S' to refer to the combination of the shard and the person holding it. -
We don't know that dragons are still on Yolen. We only know that there are/were dragons on Yolen and that the recipient of the letter is a dragon. We don't know where it is. The two lightweaving systems may not be mutually exclusive. The Roshar lightweaving could have been produced by specific Shardic investment rather than general Adonalsic investment and both could have occurred on the same planet. At the time of Dragonsteel's initial writing, the shattered plains were on Yolen now they are on Roshar and won't be on Yolen. (I say this not to make a connection between Yolen and Roshar, but rather to indicate that things may change until the book is published). That being said, I think it is quite unlikely that Roshar was formerly known as Yolen, but, I do think it is possible.

But, he hasn't done it yet. Could be circumstances which change his mind.

Sure it does Cheese. Nahel spren could be voluntary splinters of Honor and Cultivation together each type having a varying degree of each Shard, where honorspren are likely exclusively of Honor and cultivationspren (theoretical) are exclusively of Cultivation. Meanwhile, the more mundane spren are all involuntary splinters of Honor formed at the shattering of the shard and are formed exclusively of Honor.

I just went digging for the spike and survive quote that we have been discussing. We have been remembering it incorrectly it appears (unless there is a similar but different quote out there). Here it is: Quote I think this should add a bit of clearer flavor top the discussion.

Go here Kadrok to see. http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/3511-nature-of-the-wild-chalkings-spoilers/#entry67541 Nice Morsk. Beheaded Inquisitor is awesome. Between the lot of us, so far we knocked it down from -26 to -22. So, we just need to keep upvoting it down until we see what -5 to -9 is. Then we'll just be missing -100 for the negative rankings.

The MAG decay thing is suggestive, but I don't know of anything canon on relative decay rates of hemalurgic spikes. I am disinclined to accept that a lerasium spike would not kill the donor. I am of the opinion that the magic of hemalurgy is not what kills the donor, but rather it is having a big spike driven through your heart. Sounds pretty fatal to me. As to the master spike for allomantic ability, that would be a bit underwhelming for at least two reasons: 1) Atium is universal to anything (at the very least allomantic ability and feruchemical ability); and, 2) Seems like you'd be better off burning a chunk of your lerasium spike and becoming mistborn than by spiking an allomantic ability with a lerasium spike.

Theory - on Oathpacts, Desolations and Recreances
Shardlet replied to 11thorderknight's topic in Stormlight Archive
Well, I have one significant problem with this theory and one niggling problem. The niggling problem is that I don't see any indication that the number of Heralds which survive is any indication of how close they came to winning the desolation. This is one of my big questions. Humanity has survived 99 desolations, but lost them all. What constitutes a win? The big problem I see is that you said in the first paragraph that desolations come when a critical mass of surgebinders is reached. you themn later say that surgebinders began to turn up again just in time for the desolation. This seems somewhat contradictory or at least circular reasoning. On the one hand you seem to suggest that desolations only come when there is a certain amount of surgebinders and then obn the other you suggest that surgebinders come for the upcoming desolation. I think you need to choose between the two. As it stands, Taln has come as a Herald of the Everstorm, the final desolation and I don't see any indication as yet of a large number of surgebinders. Edit: I actually don't see any reason for this to be in the WoR subforum. This is all based on info from TWoK which was released 3 years ago. The only thing that needs to go in spoiler tags at this point is stuff that is directly from WoR.
