What do you think of the 17th Shard forums so far?
-
Hi Clockeyes! My favorite Sanderson-related theories that were NOT made by me include the following: Edwarn Ladrian is a Spinner by Red Ferring (I know someone else thought of this way before; I just can't find the older post right now) KalynaAnne's Hardcore Rithmatic Theory Leiyan's speculations on the Moons of Roshar The Listeners are the Pre-Shattering Native Inhabitants of Roshar by NutiketAiel Elhokar is a Proto-Willshaper by CabbageHead Tien was a Proto-Lightweaver by Odeis There are others I'm forgetting, I'm sure, so I might update this later. I'm also rather fond of my own theories (linked in my sig below). As for "real life" theories, I like string theories in general (though not necessarily the supersymmetry involved in some of them), as well as the Distributist economic theory, and the theory that the fundamental circle constant is the ratio of the circle to its radius (not its diameter).

Is this a thing now? Alright. Hit Feather up with some Qs!

Which Shard/s would you like Renarin to hold? -
If you want to impress people more by actually drinking visible metal, I highly suggest putting a shot of Goldschläger in a vial. It contains real gold, and drinking enough of it has a good chance of making you feel like you've just finished Allomantically burning gold.

Skybreaker Question [Warbreaker Spoilers]
skaa replied to SingTheSorrow's topic in Stormlight Archive
There is a Warbreaker-centric explanation, but the general explanation is that it's possible for a piece of a Shard's power to gain sentience on its own. Such a sentient piece of Shardic power is called a Splinter. You can find Splinters in Elantris, Warbreaker, and the Stormlight Archive. And yes, highspren being the traditional spren of Skybreakers is the most sensible conclusion we could make based on Syl's words, but I don't think any of Nale's current minions actually bonded with one.- 27 replies

Does Brightness want some Unkalaki soup? It was prepared by my friend Numuhukumakiaki'aialunamor for all the Lighteyes of the 17th Shard. *offers bowl* (Just kidding.) On a less crappy note ( ) , which Divine Attributes do you think best describe you?

"Alicorn" is what some people call winged unicorns. I think that's what Quiver is referring to, although in fact the word originally means the horn of a unicorn. What is you favorite magical creature?

I won't partake in the debate about anonymous rep votes, but I do have a rep-related request: Is it possible to change the ordering of posts in the Reputation tab from "Most recent post first" to "Most recently upvoted/downvoted post first"? So when an old post gets upvoted/downvoted, it would rise to the top of the list. This would be useful to me because occasionally I wish to check which post caused the latest change in my rep points. If the particular post is old, it will be impossible to find it under all the newer posts that have been voted on. I know this isn't a common problem (I guess I'm particularly prone because I link to a lot of old threads in my sig), but it would still be nice to know which of my old threads are being rediscovered and are still making people happy (or angry). I have no experience with IPB code so I don't know how easy it is to implement this idea (are voting timestamps being stored at all?), but what do you guys think? Is it worth implementing?

How delightful are you, exactly?

@Chaos, Tau Day is fast approaching. What do you think of τ (i.e. 2π, or the ratio of a circle's circumference to its radius)?
-
According to this WoB, the Spiritual Realm is not tied to location, so you're probably correct there. We're still not sure why location seems to be important in Selish Investiture (which makes AonDor difficult to use outside of Sel), but generally speaking it seems a Shard can Invest people even when they're not on its home Shardworld as long as they have the right Innate Investiture. So I guess it's still Harmony powering Allomancy on Roshar. Of course, Surgebinders and the Returned do have direct access to a Shard Splinter, rendering the distance issue moot in their case.

Whoops, I guess I shouldn't have edited that part out of my post. Sorry about that. Reminds me of this thread.

Most of the dreams I remember having recently involve me moving around continuously in a futile quest quest to do one thing. Last night it was about paying for something (I forgot what specifically). I was looking for the cashier, going through various doors and talking to different people asking for directions, but I never found where to pay for the thing until the woke up. Several weeks ago the dream was about withdrawing money from an ATM so that I could eat at a sushi restaurant. I spent a long time walking around the city, going in and out of a couple of buildings in the process, without finding a single sparking ATM. (I had a huge craving for sushi after I woke from that dream.) Note to self: Reach for your dreams, but not in your dreams. Because you never get anything done in your dreams. When I have nightmares (which is rare), they're usually of the form of me being back in school and failing some test or otherwise being humiliated in class. Sometimes I dream about falling, but I wake up immediately when that happens. (I am slightly acrophobic.) Several times in the past couple of years I've woken up after distinctly hearing my dad or my mom call me to come down for breakfast. Then I realize I'm alone in my apartment, not in my parents' house. It was a bit creepy at first, but now I think it's just my brain trying its best to keep me from getting late for work.

Hi! Have you finished Words of Radiance?

Winter Cloud is known here for being an RPer whose characters include a wolf, a Venture, and... those other characters she played in the Sanderson Eliminations.

What an interesting typo. There are several mentions of birds in the Mistborn trilogy, including birds of prey and carrion birds,

Welcome to the 17th Shard! When you're done with Hero of Ages, I hope you'll share your thoughts about the first Mistborn trilogy with us. Are you planning to read the Mistborn Adventures series?

Nice! I think congratulations are in order. *upvotes ecohansen's posts*

Which Moderator Have We Never Seen? (Or: Brandon's Alt Account)
skaa replied to Adamir's topic in 17th Shard Discussion
There's a post in the Introductions forum introducing the 17th Shard staff as of 2010. It was written by Shivertongue, a.k.a. Will, the graphics guy. He is not Brandon.KChan, a.k.a. Kerry, is a female cosplayer who's known Eric since the TWG days and is still pretty active in the Mistborn RPG. She is also not Brandon. -
From an interview last year:

Though I quickly learned to appreciate the usefulness of a Protean Greninja (I mean, who doesn't have one of these for competitive battling?), my favorite starter ever isn't Froakie, but a similar water-type: Oshawott. I really like the design of his evolutionary family (sword-wielding Samurott is super cool!), and his base stats are pretty decent. Given that I never use my actual starter Pokemon for competitive battling anyway (because one shouldn't compete using Pokemon with less than four perfect IVs), the aesthetics and the base stats are all that really matters to me. Of all the starters I actually used, Chikorita is the one that disappointed me the most. I was a big fan of Bulbasaur and was excited to use another Grass-type starter when Gold and Silver came out, but Chikorita was just too mediocre for me both design-wise and stats-wise. I still used it, but I got tired of it relatively quickly and dumped it in the PC as soon as I could.

As I suggested above, the biography might have been named after the Shardblade, as a sort of metonym for Dalinar. Oathbringer was an integral part of the Blackthorn's legend, so any biographer of his would be aware of it.

That's great! Consistency is good!I wonder if the in-world book was named after the sword (like, if it's a biography of the Blackthorn, and the author used Oathbringer as a metonymic epithet for Dalinar). Or maybe both the sword and the book were named after some historical guy who was called Oathbringer. It'd be weird if the sword was named after the book; it's like naming a sword Necronomicon (which does sound cool, I admit, but still weird).

Wait, so does this mean Brandon has given up on the convention of using in-universe book titles for the Stormlight Archive, or did Dalinar (or whoever named Oathbringer) actually name a Shardblade after a book?
