  1. That's reasonable. I forgot that the Vessels were in the Spiritual Realm, and even if the Shard itself could normally access Fortune by itself, the Dor is in the CR anyways. Sand Mastery is a plausible way to do it, though I am worried that it's not precise enough to hit a specific nerve in the heart. Although, I don't currently have access to any canon version of White Sand so I can't verify that. Awakening is going to be very difficult to do this with. It's very hard to be precise—long, lengthy commands that are hard to visualize are extremely difficult. Awakening metal requires many breaths and the already invested metal may have difficulties getting a Hemalurgic charge. Yes, but I am more interested in other powers that would be significantly harder to do by trial and error. Stuff like Elantrian-ness, Connection, and other non Metallic Arts. It's true, incredible precision is necessary. But it is much easier to research where someone's heart is and tell the spike to go there than to have the surgical accuracy and dexterity to place a spike in the correct position during combat. You make a good point about different people being different sizes.
  2. You could do that with a single soulcaster.
  3. I was thinking, Hemalurgy is—theoretically—an incredibly powerful art. However, it is also very precise and variable, depending significantly on your target. In practice, placing the spikes is incredibly difficult, necessitating surgical accuracy. Knowing where to place the spikes is also extremely difficult to obtain information—particularly if you're trying to do more than steal the metallic arts. AonDor is also an incredibly precise and variable art, and I believe that they have synergy. Considering the validity of spike guns, I believe moving a spike with AonDor would hemalurgically charge it. Given the available precision to AonDor, a spike could be put through any nerve with perfect precision, only needing a basic knowledge of anatomy and AonDor—allowing for many more spikes to be produced. It could also open up the possibility of spikes being used in combat situations. If you can engrave Aons on an item to summon an steel spike and send it to a specific location in an enemy's body, this makes a hemalurgist much more dangerous. If you fight this hemalurgist, then they could potentially steal the powers of anyone attacking them. Of course, this would need to be done in advance, but, given my second idea that I'm about to present, you could easily set up plans to deprive any Radiant, Elantrian, or Metalborn of their powers by simply touching a combination of Aons. Powers don't even necessarily have to be stolen. If you, in a fight, can deprive your opponent of any of their strength, their senses, their intelligence, you could potentially defeat a much stronger foe—even one that can heal from a metal spike hurtling at their body. Of course, this plan would require an incredible amount of knowledge about bindpoints—something that is frequently ignored by many Sharders (mostly due to the inability to get much more information about them). However, I have a proposal that I believe may fix the issue. Given that AonDor can be conditional and Shards can access a wealth of information upon request, I believe that AonDor—the Dor being the body of two shards—can potentially give access to this information. For example, you could create an Aon equation that goes like this "if a steel spike in this position would steal Allomantic Iron, then summon a light for 5 seconds." You could use this to discover bindpoints for spikes without intensive testing—something that would often be wrong for highly invested individuals given the fact that many of the spiritwebs are unusual, shifting bindpoints. Given these points (pun not intended), I think it would be possible to use AonDor to vastly improve the efficiency and practical aspects of Hemalurgy. The actual theoretical power would be mostly unchanged, but it would allow an individual or group to reach this theoretically power much easier before Era 4 starts bringing us stuff like CAT scans for spiritwebs.
  4. Aradan Liese, Mistwarrens "I...was investigating the group with a man called Thavel Tallin. I found him mugging and impersonating a man. He claimed to be chasing after this organization, and part of me believed him, part of me wanted to make sure he didn't mug anyone else. We infiltrated a meeting when he was recognized and a fight broke out." "I was captured, but I don't know if he was. I woke up in that complex and managed to escape when I heard you. I don't know who these people really are and I believe they wanted to use my powers for a spike." @Lunamor
  5. It was locked for April Fools and stayed locked for quite some time after. #1 Taln Fan "won" for probably longer than anyone else has.
  6. Oh, okay. Gotcha. What about aluminum bullets? Because aluminum is generally ignored, I suspect they would just pass through and hit you. Also, you wouldn't be able to heal the wound with aluminum in it. Your shield wouldn't be penetrated, so you wouldn't teleport away. If they, before entering the saferoom, surrounded it with aluminum, I doubt you would be notified. The signal would blocked. You probably could specify a location, but the fact remains that Raoden either couldn't or didn't. That's because they only detect kinetic investiture. They probably couldn't detect just an inactive aon either. Well, I'm assuming that they would detect it when you flee, not before. If you have dozens of aons running at all times and a new one suddenly acts, then our seeker can determine which one is Aon Tia. Fair enough, I forgot the residents of Arelon started neutral. However, they could be paid, they start neutral, but not necessarily end so. Regardless, there are numerous other Elantrians including the Ire, the Sorceress, and others in Teod and Duladel. With an Elantrian to train on, I think a savant could do it. A direction is still immensely valuable. Plus, I suspect it would determine on how your Aon is drawn. If it teleports you to a specific location, I doubt you would get a direction at all, but instead coordinates (or however you specify a certain location).
  7. I don't think it will be a flop, per se, I think it will just be "fine." I'm actually nervous about the "full creative control," as a) Brandon is not a movie director. If he writes the screenplay as he says, it would be best if he yielded to people experienced in movies. Prose is already his weakest point, and, while movies are not the same thing, I'm worried that will translate poorly to a film b) It will place the movies as a weird pseudo canon. The rpg is mostly forgiven for this by the fact that no one expects an rpg to be fully canon. Despite this, it's actual status has been frequently debated and it's unclear how far it's canonicity extends and how it interacts with existing WoBs. A movie will only exacerbate these issues—significantly so if Brandon is majorly involved. c) It could slow down books, and Brandon's workload is already piling up. I suspect that the adaptations will replace any hope of a Rithmatist sequel and will delay Book of Nails, Elantris 2, Nightblood, etc. d) It could potentially amplify a transformation of the fandom from book fans to movie fans (as I and Frustration have said), though I think Brandon's actions would have the least influence on this and it could be significantly curtailed by the actions of the 17th Shard staff. In fact, I bet they've already began to have discussions about how to handle movie fans. My position is different from most in here in that I do want an adaptation, but I suspect Brandon utilizing his control for more than a veto (which seems unlikely) has a high possibility of creating multiple issues. Edit: I think the reason why Brandon is trying to exert so much more control is because he got spooked by WoT and ignorance from Amazon execs.
  8. We don't really know how aons and shields would handle under that sort of pressure. When the manacles were targeted, they stopped much of their inhibitions on Starling—their primary function. I find it equally likely that, given enough power, your Aon Tias could fail. Especially given the fact that the intensifier can output anti investiture. Plus there's the previous points of the possibility of not being able to teleport to a specific place and the potential for these saferooms to be breached. In addition, highly skilled Seekers can determine the following: Non allomantic pulses (Edit: including AonDor) What emotions rioters/seekers are influencing When an allomancer is flaring If an allomancer is low on metals Feruchemical stuff Given all of these, it stands to reason that a Seeker could glean some information from the usage of Aon Tia. This, combined with fortune or something, presents the possibility of Seekers being able to find the location of your safehouse if they are present during your teleporting away. (e.g. WoT Traveling) Yeah, I know. That's why I said it wasn't a great example as it is mitigable.
  9. Fair enough. I see. So if you have a field surrounding you, what if someone uses the intensifier from Emberdark? It managed to destroy a unbreakable lock. It might just punch through all your protections. If the Aon fails, then they can carry out the aluminum plan, else they can probably just kill you with it. The intensifier, if they know where to aim, may allow them to compromise your saferooms without your knowledge if they can take out Aons before they alert you. If the intensifier doesn't work, dor is freely available in the CR. They could make anti-dor and dispense it. They could also use a suppression fabrial tuned to Devotion. Aluminum blackbane rounds should be effective as well—in fact, they may interfere with transportation. And, although this is the worst case example, a Bondsmith or a Hemalurgist could probably just take your connection to Devotion, cutting you off.
  10. Is this sarcasm?
  11. What if you have seekers/secretspren come after you? What if an elsecaller soulcasts a ton of aluminum on/around you? Can't teleport out of that, can't destroy it with Aons, and will eventually suffocate.
  12. Borrowing on a trend, I'd like for y'all to protect an Elantrian (yourself if you want). AonDor is theoretically one of the strongest magics, so let's see it. The Elantrian, if not you, will listen to anything you say. The Elantrian has made enemies across the Cosmere, so everyone (except for the residents of Arelon, who are neutral at start) wants to kill the Elantrian. What can you do to protect the Elantrian (or yourself)? If you can figure out how to use AonDor offplanet, you can leave Sel.
  13. I haven't read the book, but I've heard the Princess Bride adaptation is significantly better.
  14. That's true. It's always a risk. However, I think instead of us being "quickly outnumer[ed]", I think it is more of a long term risk. After all, this is a very active fanbase and he is still releasing books. Yes, probably. I don't spend a lot of time on either, especially Cosmere parts, but yes. I actually think it's shifting away. The WoT show has been discussed to death, and it's moving to more book focused—though probably never as much as before. True. I doubt it's going to truly bomb in most likely scenarios, as many fans are going to go see at least the Mistborn movie, but it's possible WoA+Stormlight doesn't get made. Also, I wouldn't be too nervous about a bad film, after all, this exists. Honestly, even if it is truly terrible, I'm probably still going to watch a movie. A show, I might watch a couple of episodes. I'm worried Brandon's going to be too focused on what could have been when he wrote Mistborn, and that the plot is going to suffer for it. In Hollywood, he can't just write all three books and then publish them one by one like he did Mistborn.
  15. Aradan Liese, Mistwarrens "Interesting. He seems to be someone I would rather stay away from." Aradan withdrew his hand and ran it through his hair. Huh, that's odd. One of my metalminds must have fallen off in the chase. Maybe I ought to get them readjusted. At least it didn't have any health in it. Aradan frowned, "Why more metals? Are we in danger here?" Sighing, he reached into his shirt and unpinned the medallion. "This is something I found. It allows me to burn iron. I believe it comes from the Southern Continent. I stumbled upon a crashed Malwish ship with this. As they didn't appear to be using it, being dead, I decided that me having it was better than buried in the Roughs. Also, it's not actually made of iron, it's made of nicrosil." He felt bad about taking any money from Eza, but surely she had to have a decent job, considering her allomantic prowess. Although he didn't know the denominations of money in Alleycity, the bag was heavy enough to at least probably give him a place to stay for a while. @Lunamor
  16. Aradan Liese, Mistwarrens Aradan took Eza's hand and shook it. "Thank you. My name is Aradan. I am—unfortunately—new to Alleycity. I wouldn't normally take anything, but I have nowhere to sleep or to maintain myself. I, however, am extremely curious and unnerved by the spiked man who chased us. Who is that? What powers does he have? Is he a Steel Inquisitor? Why were you locked up in that complex? The woman who chased us appeared to recognize you." "Why is that? I apologize for my questions, but I generally find that information is powerful. And, to thank you for bringing me here, I would like to ask if there is anything more that you need. While I might not be able to do much, I may be able to help you somewhat." @Lunamor
  17. That's not even a movie problem, it doesn't even make sense given the movies. The ring is portrayed as incredibly corrupting, to the point which Faramir (in the movie) originally takes the hobbits to Osgiliath. Not to even mention the Nazgûl and their mounts. I disagree. The Cosmere fandom is fairly centralized—the Shard runs half of everything online. Any movie watchers will probably get redirected to the Shard, to which they'll meet all the most zealous book readers. They'll either assimilate or leave. The most separate fandom we might get is a couple of tiny reddit communities and some youtube channels. I don't think a separate fandom will really exist, unless they are massively successful. See the above, I don't know if this is really going to occur to that degree. But yes, I am worried about this. I think the easiest solution to deal with this is to simply make a subforum for movie discussion. What I'm more worried about is canon changes from the adaptations. Especially if that begins to affect the books or the Shard. In 2020, Brandon said that, in a Mistborn adaptation, he'd make significant changes. While some of them are minor (gender swapping some of the crew), some of them are fairly significant plot changes. An overview: Shan Elariel (soon to be Venture) is now Elend's sister, not his fiance House Venture controls the city police and has the atium stash (not the full thing, but a lot of it) Atium is burnable by all allomancers (not that big of a deal in TFE, but changes HOA fairly significantly, I think nalatium is a more elegant solution) No more sign of sixteen (imo not that bad to get rid of) Dox and Ham are female (going to be odd, but not that bad really. More of a neutral change) Which brother? It certainly could not be Elend, right? Elend had no Allomancy powers (before he ate the lerasium in WoA), so Straff despised Elend and thought him too weak. And Zane was a bastard and also mad dog.If Shan was Straff's legitimate daughter, then her succession was already 100% secure. She wouldn't need to prove anything to anybody. Brandon Sanderson It will be Elend, but it's more that this is the first time that Shan gets to be on her own, leading by herself, and wants to show off for the Lord Ruler. Also, there's the question of whether the male heir--though inferior in this case--might get the nod for sexism reasons. I think it's going to work just fine, but I'll admit, it's getting a little rough to discuss all these details on a thread like this--I can't answer everyone's questions, I'm afraid. I just wanted to indicate the kinds of changes I'm looking at making. Whatever I do will go through my standard "show it to tons of beta readers and get feedback" process, so I should be able to catch problems and fix them. meh84f The bit about atium is a bit confusing. The Ventures are going to have the Atium stash? Not the stash that we don’t find until the end I’m assuming? So it’ll be a stash but much smaller than expected? Brandon Sanderson So, I'm not sure I can explain it all in this, but one big change I wished I'd made from the start of Mistborn is making atium usable by all Allomancers. As I've gotten further in the cosmere, using a god metal as just for Mistborn has felt off. So the lore change for the films will mean any Allomancer can use atium. This, in turn, lets House Venture have access to the LR's atium as a "Control the city" last resort. They keep a task force of allomancers for this purpose--which Ham can join, in anticipation of being able to steal it once Shan accesses it. (They don't know that House Venture is only given about a hundred beads of atium, not access to the full mythical cache, which will be reserved for the third movie.) Makes the worldbuilding and storytelling more elegant, I've found, in the film. And it fits better with more "modern" cosmere fundamentals as have developed over the last decade. I think I'd make this change even if we moved to a television show and long form. The Lord Ruler is still the "big bad" but Shan and the Inquisitors both get a little more screen time. (Actually, about the same as in the books--it's just that other parts are being trimmed, making them more front-and-center.) Phantine Based on that, you're also streamlining away the Sign of Sixteen if it gets a sequel? To be honest, that didn't really work for me in the novel anyway. Brandon Sanderson It's one of my least favorite parts of the trilogy. It (along with Vin drawing upon the mists in book one) are big changes I'm hoping to make to fix weaker sections of the continuity. General Reddit 2020 (June 22, 2020) I'm worried that we're going to end up with two canons—one movies and one not. And over time, even if the Shard does it's best to keep wannabe fans out, a shift will occur. This can be seen with LoTR (as Frustration said), the most significant example being Denethor. I don't think two separate fandoms are going to exist, but one is going to subsume the other. (and I'd indefinitely prefer books to win)
  18. Which is why bendalloy is one of the best powers for an Elantrian.
  19. We're the only house with enough people to play...
  20. Leonidas stretched. He was never that interested in Quidditch, but extra points is extra points. Professor Snape was very insistent every Slytherin who could ride a broom was to play. Grabbing the beater bat, he mounted his broom and flew up onto the pitch. Leaning in to speed up, he caught up to one of the bludgers and hit it. Nearly slipping, he cursed. Clearly, he was not fit for the team. But, might as well have fun this game.
  21. Dumbledore's right actually. I was expelled, not NKed. Unless they choked me on my way home, in which case I am extremely disappointed. Can I be a slytherin beater? I want to hit play with some people as revenge for voting me out.
  22. Oh, my mistake. Sorry.
  23. The Spiritual Realm isn't time travel to the past, it's a recreation. (You can see when Hoid breaks down)
  24. Brandon frequently gets things wrong. And changes his mind. Or just forgets the answer. WoBs are (almost) always secondary canon to the books. The only rare exceptions are when Brandon says a character is wrong about something or the even rarer retcon (most of which make themselves into the books at some point). Also, Frustration is right (again) as well.
  25. I pretty sure almost every proselytizing missionary gets that at least once—probably even a couple of service ones too.
