Motivation, Execution, Consequence: A Realmatic Theory
Leuthie replied to Kurkistan's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Brandon stated that physics is normal in the Cosmere, magic aside. He said nothing about how the normal-working physics is accomplished. Everything has aspects in all three Realms, so shouldn't the physical reactions they all have to each other have aspects in all three Realms, as well? Couldn't the laws of physics be defined and regulated outside the Physical Realm? In fact, doesn't it make sense, from all we know, for all physical laws to be found in Spiritual connections?- 134 replies

Interesting tidbits from signing in San Jose
Leuthie replied to The Anamnesor's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I'd swap Nalthis and Scadrial. -
Just thinking out loud: Presence and Ability in each Realm. Spren: Large Spiritual presence leads to large Cognitive ability; Small Cognitive presence leads to small Physical ability. Bond increased Cognitive presence of Spren increasing Physical ability. Also increased Spiritual presence of bonder leading to increased Cognitive ability.

Everything exists in all three Realms. Breath has a Physical component (white smoke), a Cognitive component, and a Spiritual Component. Since we don't experience the Cognitive or Spritiual on Nalthis, we have no idea what those look like. However, the primary effect of Breath is to increase Cognitive presence. Your own argument states this. Most of the power of Breath is in transferring, conferring, or, better, Endowing others with a larger Cognitive presence. Of course this requires Spiritual Energy. Every Magic does. Most of the mechanics of the magic systems seem to create a conduit between Physical and Spiritual to transfer and shape Spiritual energy to make use of it. Of course Breath has a Spiritual aspect and the removal of one's Breath results in a deminished Spiritual presence (Drab-i-ness). However, I don't think this Spiritual lose is very significant. Its tiny. Like.chipping a Spiritual fingernail. Yet the Cognitive gains from having increased Breath is quite significant. Then again, you're arguing for Spiritual presence of Breath being most significant while I'm arguing that Cognitive effects are more significant. We're probably both right. A larger Spiritual presence is probably required to support the larger Cognitive abilities.

The description of Taln covered in condensation in the epilogue matches language decribing the same phenomenon when Shardblades are retrieved.

I'm of a mind that the Oathpact was between Cultivation and Honor. Something along the lines of Cultivation not wanting humans on Roshar but agreeing to it as long as she can keep their numbers down. This culling was known as the Desolations and they also provided opportunity for Honorable service of Heroes via the Heralds. The Heralds simply slept in the Spiritual realm between and all was peachy. Then along come Odium, who finds the storage place of the Heralds and turns it to a torture chamber to instill Hate in Honors greatest heroes... I just don't see Odium striking a deal with those he wants to Splinter. I also dont see him as wanting to use his power to destroy Roshar. Take all look at Sel, Odium isn't evil. Honor's vision of a completely destroyed Roshar is the result of a mind that can only see black and white; he failed so the world is doomed...the Intent of Honor taken to the nth degree. I see Odium tweaking existing things to turn them against those he wishes to harm. The Oathpact was between Honor and Cultivation, then corrupted by Hate.

I think Endowment's ability to grab you and give you a Divine Breath requires your wanting to stay. Over and over in Warbreaker its stated that every Returned has dreams that indicate a reason why they Returned. This indicates to me that there is a "want to" requirement to sticking around. Roshar has the near dead giving statements. These seem to be shadows of previous thoughts that find their way to the Physical with someones dying breath; Cognitive echoes from strong or shared feelings that float around, released when another dies. Nalthis has dreams of the future upon dying that create the "want to" required for Returning.

Brandon's not hiding that Heralds are "stored" in a similar place as Shardblades. We may learn more about Shardblades in WoR. A bigger question is why they had to be tortured between Desolations?

The biggest thing I get from that quote is the fact that interactive spren are spren that result from ideals and concepts. They are us, therefore they can interact. The next thing is that spren are the Physical.manifestation, or shadow, of Identity. "Are there poopspren?" "Well, everything has an identity." That exchange gives you the definition of spren. Of course, now we have to define Identity. As for why Roshar has Spren and other planets do not... Why does Nalthis have Breaths? Why do region based symbols access magic on Sel? What's up with metal on Scadrial? Planets have Identities, right? And those Identities would be rather imposing, possibly? That imposing Identity would have a large effect on the Identities of those on the planet, I would guess. Shards themselves would be affected, having to alter themselves or the planet to make use of its quirks. Native sentients and non-natives alike would have to have their Identities aligned with the planet somehow to make use of any power that could be accessed there. Ramble ramble Roshar's Identity causes the shadows of Identities to be visible to those with large Cognitive presence. Remember that spren were visible before Honor was Splintered.

Shardblades and the Cognitive "Complete Identity"
Leuthie replied to Otto Didact's topic in Stormlight Archive
Brandon seems to refer to soul when he's talking about parts of people outside the Physical. So soul refers to both Cognitive and/or Spiritual. -
Stormlight 2 - Where Shardblades come from

I wouldn't say they're evil, but Syl's reaction does imply they are working against the Intent of Honor. -
Are there other end-negative Investitures?
Leuthie replied to TheOneKEA's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Assuming the brass is metabolized by the body and returned to the ecosystem (or whatever the never explained process is of the metal leaving the body), no brass is lost. Energy is acquired from outside the Physical realm by the action of "burning" the brass and used to do the Work of changing the emotions of others. End positive. -
Are there other end-negative Investitures?
Leuthie replied to TheOneKEA's topic in Cosmere Discussion
As I understand them: End positive: results in increased energy/mass in physical realm. Energy comes from Shard to.do Work. End neutral: results in no change. Feruchemy...Conservation of Energy...Energy to do Work is stored for later use. End negative: results in less energy/mass in Physical realm. Energy to do work is taken from Physical Realm and not returned to Physical realm via Work done. Dakhor transportation takes a life and a body out of the Physical Realm completely to transport others somewhere else. -

Leuthie replied to TheOneKEA's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Dakhor transportation is the only other end-negative I can think of. -
Gauging how an individual is changed by a new history does require a lot of tweaking. Still, the key was the history. I wish I had the book in.front of me. I remember distinctly reading several descriptions of her processes and interpreting it as having nothing to do with a form but rather to do with identity (cognitive self view and others views) and history (how those views have changed over time). A brick of hard stone can be changed to soft stone, but only for a short time because no one would actually mistake the two while making the wall.

Not only must it fit the form, but it must conform to a believable history. Forgeries change the history on an object, not the object itself.

Seon's are devoted to their master that they don't really have free will. Their religion is to be devoted to their master. Ashe's words were supposed to be humorouse

Very few examples of end negative magic in Sanderson's works so far. Only examples I can think of are Hemalurgy, whatever Nightblood does that eats Breaths and the Dakhor transport spell that uses the life of a monk to transport another. And Nightbloods might not even be end negative. There may be more. However, nothing I've seen Szeth do gives any indication that he's taking something from the physical realm to power his magic, which is how I interpret what Brandon means by end negative.

The problem with this discussion is that you can break down any experiencial phenomenon into "waveforms". Light and sound, spoken word and drawings, songs and the color of gems, jumping up down, swinging a golf club, dancing....all can be described as "waveforms". I guess I'm trying to say that "waveforms" is too general an idea to be wrong, yet also too general to contain any real information by itself.

All that aside, this is a War breaker forum discussion and I didn't want to change it to a discussion about WoK, so I was trying to keep it simple. Stormlight is not what gives someone access to magic on Roshar in the same way as genetics on Scadrial and the Shaod on Sel. Such a simple correction turns into a new discussion about a different book because my vocabulary was wrong (yet fit the word usage in this particular discussion). My bad.

No point. Just posting things while bored. Don't have time to post essays complete with quotes and citations, so I'll just stick to jokes and congratulations like a good little lurker

You're right that we don't know all sources of Investiture. In any case, Stormlight isn't a source of Investiture. It's fuel, like color on nalthis or metal on Scadrial.
-
Investiture on Roshar is through Spren bonds

He didn't learn it from himself. He has to be speaking about his old master (who he should have loved and whose name he took according to quotes from WoK). Brandon knows the story and is dropping breadcrumbs. Just enough to keep us interested. Not enough to be able to figure anything out.
