Shadows For Silence in the Forests of Hell
Windrunner replied to ROSHtafARian's topic in General Brandon Discussion
Hoid did not directly appear in The Emperor's Soul. He was the Imperial Fool who betrayed Shai. He was in the old prologue, which Mary got Brandon to cut from the book. -
I understand this. What I'm saying is that Awakening itself has shown no indication that it would end up with any weird effects. Contrast that with AonDor and perhaps what I'm saying will be clearer. Also, there is a mention of Landless
-
I'm not the one who built it, so I won't be doing any previews. However, I just tested it, and yes, that bug is gone.
-
I can vouch for how awesome they are. It's actually fairly off-putting to come back to this version of IPB after playing around with the new one. I think you guys are going to like it a lot!
-
I strongly disagree with that. We've seen no evidence of any localization in Awakening, like we do on Sel.
-
Yeah, I did get off on a tangent there, didn't I? XD Where I was going with that, is that perhaps such a bond would allow you to get around Plate's dampening effects. Anyway, I still strongly believe that Surgebinders are able to effect one another, whether they're currently holding Stormlight or not. I don't see any easy way to definitively prove this one way or another short of asking him (and I think I've filled my quota for the day ) so I guess we'll see for sure in hopefully like 8ish months. If I am proven wrong, you have full gloating rights

But it does hint that Awakening is an ability, which I think implies it's not something that just anybody in the cosmere can do. The fact that you have to "gain" the ability to Awaken means that there are people who are unable to do so, which I'd bet is anyone not from Nalthis, with the potential exception of anyone who lived before the Shattering.
-
I would agree we haven't overtly seen any Radiants doing any Surgebindings while wearing Plate. Although, some magic beyond that of regular Plate was clearly going on in Starfall, during Dalinar's vision. Dalinar's cracked Plate jumping from 40 feet up, and the Radiant from the vision fell out of the sky, going quick enough to make a crater in solid stone. Dalinar would have been killed if he'd tried something like that just wearing Plate. But anyway, I think that it's heavily implied that the Radiants must have had a way to Surgebind with their Plate on. Szeth's shown us that one of the most powerful weapons in a Windrunner's arsenal is their mobility and the ease speed at which they can move using the Lashings. Without that, a large portion of a Windrunner's advantage is gone. Again, going back to Dalinar's vision, I'd say it is a safe bet that the man in blue Plate was a Windrunner. He had to get in the sky somehow, didn't he? I think a lashing is the most viable option there, but the man was wearing Plate. Personally, I tend to believe that there is a way to form a bond with Plate just like you can with a Blade. The fact that bits an pieces of Plate seem to appear and disappear at will implies to me that it could once be summoned and dismissed like a Shardblade.

Emphasis mine. This quote, to me at least, clearly implies that Awakening is an "ability" rather than simply having Breath.
-
I know both of these things, but they're both different from what we're talking about here. These are people having trouble using magic on or through an invested object. Nothing about another person.
-
No offense, but I'd still like to see a quote where Brandon specifically says that you cannot Surgebind someone holding Stormlight, or something to that effect. Every single person in the cosmere is invested to a certain degree, so I'd like to see where Brandon has firmly drawn the line about how much investiture someone needs for this effect you're describing to manifest.
-
I'd like to see a quote on something this specific. I've seen plenty on the fact that investitures tend to interfere with one another, like no lashing with Plate, or no pushing and pulling on spikes, for the most part, but nothing to suggest magic users can't use their magic on each other. How many times does Breeze Soothe Vin or Kelsier? If this is true, it'll definitely be disappointing for me, I think it'll take away from some of the awesomeness of the Kaladin-Szeth confrontation we have brewing. Also, as a side note, Jasnah doesn't have to even Soulcast Kaladin directly. Wouldn't turning the air around him to flame or crystal be equally devastating?
-
That's fair, my apologies. I was thinking more in a historical sense. I do hope that any reformation of the Radiants will manage to buck more modern gender roles though.

Does Splintering a Shard have an effect on Shadesmar?
Windrunner replied to b4dave's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I seized on the moment to ask a question I've wanted to know for a while now. -
I don't buy that argument. I'm pretty sure Roshar had more gender equality back in the Heraldic Epochs, the woman Knight we saw didn't seem at all subservient to the male Knight. And, with Jasnah's distance lightening Soulcasting and the fact that Kaladin is yet to perform a basic lashing, I'd bet on her winning at the moment.
-
And I'm just saying, I think that it's fairly likely that you have to be a Rosharan to bond a spren, or be spiked with whatever other unknown quality allows for that bond. After all, even if you get just get Breath from Nalthis, you can't Awaken.

Possible 3rd/4th named Knights Radiant order
Windrunner replied to Empyrus's topic in Stormlight Archive
Are you referring to Yelig-nar? He's an Unmade, which I think are the Voidbringer equivalent of the Heralds. -
I doubt he's read part of a draft. The idea of Shallan going into battle with the Alethi army seems fishy to me as well, what with how strong the gender roles are in Alethkar.
-
I'd say pretty difficult. Let's break it down like this. Szeth's Assets: Shardblade Skillful Windrunner Dalinar's Assets: Kaladin - Novice Windrunner, possibly more efficient with Stormlight due to Second Oath. Master spearman, has defeated a Shardbearer before Shallan - Novice Soulcasting abilities and a Shardblade Jasnah - Skillful Soulcaster, can be used from a distance Renarin - Plate, novice fighter Adolin - Full Shardbearer, master duelist Elite squad of former bridgemen Cobalt guard I think Dalinar's got a fighting chance, espeicially considering that he's no slouch himself, and has a few battalions of extremely loyal soldiers, some of which are also defending their families. To be fair, these guys won't be expecting him, and Szeth's killed hundreds of soldiers before.
-
Humm, it does seem to make sense. Then again, I don't see Dalinar leading anyone anywhere at his age and without his Plate. I thought it was implied that he wouldn't be leaving the warcamps anymore, but I could be wrong. Even if he hangs back, that's still significant danger for a highprince. WoR spoilers I do think the "Where's Urithiru?" plot line will be brought to a close before too many books. Brandon's said he intends most of the obvious mysteries to be cleared up quickly, with new ones appearing that had subtle hints in the other books.

I don't see why it would be more likely that any other Awakened sword would be significantly different. Considering that we have zero evidence either way, it could be true, but I'm failing to see any evidence for more likely. Nightblood is literally the only example we have of a Type IV BioChromatic entity, so it's hard to say what is characteristic of just him, or Type IV entities in general.
-
Feruchemical symbols look totally different, they are triangular in form. The pictures on the wiki. They'll probably be the chapter images for the second trilogy, with potential Hemalurgic symbols in the third.
-
No one was looking for Nightblood to have a BioChromatic aura on Nalthis either... Anyway, as I said in my initial post on the topic, this is all assuming any Awakened sword Hoid has was constructed via the same process and at the same power level as Nightblood.
-
That's not a great argument. It doesn't just effect the holder's clothes. Anything or anyone Hoid was standing near would have its colors deepened.
-
I'd be surprised if Hoid had a Nightblood-esque sword on him in any of the scenes we've seen. Nightblood's BioChromatic aura noticeably darkens and deepens the colors around him. This is an effect noticeable to even people without the First Hightening, so assuming that this hypothetical sword was created in a similar way to Nightblood, it would have been noticeable.
