    Peter choked. “I—I d-didn’t do anything,” he managed. Ana pulled the gun and aimed it at Achilles. “Let him go!”

    Peter dove to the side—he was far more agile than he looked. “Hey! Calm down, big guy!”

    Ana turned away, too, toward the window. Peter, however, approached Achilles. “You lay one finger on her, I’ll kill you,” he informed him quietly. It didn’t sound antagonizing, necessarily, but it was far from friendly.

    She sighed. “I’m not planning on it. That was just a reflex. It’s not really something you can shake when you’re someone like me.”

    She stared at him for a second, then frowned. "Achilles? Like that Greek god with the bad heel?"

    “Everywhere,” she murmured. “Ukraine. Ad’Leid. Boston.”

    “Hey!” Ana shouted. She put a hand out toward him. “Tam’s right. You need to calm down. We can’t help you if you’re dangerous.”

    He didn’t scare her either. At least the school had done her that much. She shoved the gun back into the holster, but her fists clenched at her sides. Peter crossed over to her, almost protectively, and gently touched her hand. She pulled away.

    Ana yelped and scrambled for the pistol. “I wasn’t going to shoot him unless he gave me a reason to,” Ana spat, glaring daggers at the man. Even though she was smaller than he was, her gaze carried something dangerous

    “It was.” Ana jumped to her feet, hands flying to a holster at her hip.

    He nodded solemnly. "That was one of the worse tests, but a lot of them were violent and all of them were dangerous."

    "It was... well, it was inhumane. Unethical, if you will. They put us through a bunch of staged situations, except we didn't actually know any of them were staged, and people always got hurt. Example: Chan, Reanne, and Ana all got kidnapped when they were visiting Seoul, dragged to some dungeon in the middle of nowhere, and tortured for several days. I rescued them when a different rescue attempt failed," he boasted. "Nasty stuff."

    "We were trying to get out of Ad'Leid.--The school for heroes. Went to a friend's place for a while, but they've got three kids, and we were in the way. Ana didn't want to leave, and... well, we had a fight. Kaboom. Stranded out in the woods. We were lucky to have found you; the last time we got stranded in the woods, a panther almost killed her and her lousy boyfriend."
