    “What, did you miss me coming back covered in blood?” Eddie asks sarcastically.

    Eddie nodded distractedly, looking at her hands. “One of those almost killed me earlier. Now it’s not even an inconvenience.” “Of course,” the boy said. “Everyone makes mistakes, man. I’m sure you haven’t done anything too horrible.”

    Rue rolled her eyes, but smiled as well. Then she turned towards the stomping. @Ancient Elantrian

    “Yeah,” the boy says, smiling. “Last year I crashed my dad’s car, completely totaled it, hurt another guy pretty bad…now that guy’s my best friend.”

    “I’m not going to do anything dangerous,” Rue said flatly. “And probably just mine. But I could make something…or multiple somethings…who doesn’t like fun magic toys?”

    “No, no, it—it was fire, but your ice…I could see it, but it was like there was nothing there. I didn’t even feel cold.” Then Eddie’s eyes widen as she notices one of the spiked ice monsters coming up behind Lilyana. “Hold very, very still,” she murmurs, pulling out a gun. She aims it over Lilyana’s head, then focuses and mentally lights the gunpowder… Her hand, and gun, explode in a burst of flames, sending flaming debris in every direction. She curses. “I liked that gun!” Then, suddenly, the monster is engulfed in flames.

    “Ooh, now there’s an idea!” Rue said. “I wouldn’t mind playing around with magic…”

    “No, Lil, I didn’t even feel the ice,” Eddie says, panicking. “It was like an illusion. I don’t know how to cool it…”

    “Mostly,” Rue said. “It’s taken some adapting, you know, getting used to living without fighting…and then there’s the whole thing with everyone trying to convince me that men with powers aren’t evil, which I still don’t believe, by the way…” She shrugged. “I don’t know, it just feels like I’m wasting all my time. You?”

    The ice melts immediately, and Eddie frowns. “Lil…I didn’t even know I was using my powers…and your ice is really cold…” Her whole head is now covered in fire.

    “Fantastic,” Rue said, following.

    She shakes her head. “I could go for some chouta…”
  14. Edema Rue
    “I know,” Eddie says, “and maybe I’m just not as strong as you. I’m sure you could resist this urge without even trying. But I just want to break it…I feel like I could burn Athena to dust without even trying…” her forehead shines with sweat, and small busts of flame start to run through her hair.

    She shrugged. “Something. Anything other than sitting around reading. I know I said boring would be nice, and I don’t want to go back to fighting, but…I want something more than a stupid book.”

    Rue groaned. “You’re reading a book? How the light do you get through these things?”

    Eddie flushed, embarrassed. “Maybe, but…I don’t know. I feel so…angry. Furious. I want to light the world on fire then watch it burn.”

    Xiylna shrugged, then flew over and whispered in Penn’s ear.

    Xiylna giggled. “Telling you would be cheating! Cheating is naughty!”

    Rue groaned and tossed her book aside, muttering to herself about how ridiculous reading was. She stomped out of her room, wandering the halls of the clinic until she realized she was near TAAron’s room. She found his door and knocked. @The Aspiring Archivist

    Xiylna flew around and read everyone’s cards.

    “But maybe…maybe she was right to take it. The second I got it back, the first thing I did was scream at you.” The boy looked up at the sky, blinking at the falling snowflakes. I knew I should’ve just worked at Wendy’s this summer. “Because hurt doesn’t last forever. They’ll forgive you for anything you’ve done, incredible as that may seem. Humans are bizarre and incredible.”

    Eddie’s gaze hardened. “If she weren’t already dead I’d kill her myself.”

    Eddie frowned. “No, no, it’s her! It has to be her! No one else would…who…oh no.”

    Rue was sitting in her room, disdainfully flipping through a book, though perhaps less disdainfully than she once would have.
