Because there are lots of cities in the Elendel Basin. None of them will be as crowded as Elendel itself, but they will still have lots of people. If anything, 20 millions is a conservative number.

The population of Elendel alone should be around 4,5-5 millions. That's a lot higher than Earth's population growth in the last 350 years. They must have been at it like bunnies.
  3. Except, adopting perpetual present tense will cause us to have to use different tenses for fictional and real world articles too. As WeiryWriter and FeatherWriter explained, perpetual present tense is used for fictional works. We would still use past tense while writing, for example, Brandon's biography. Yes, I understand the correct way to write articles about fictional works is using perpetual present tense. That doesn't mean we can't write articles from an in-universe perspective. Yeah, it seems like it's time for a decision to be made. I feel like we've all made our points. No one seems to be convincing anyone right now. Maybe we should take a poll to see the opinion of the whole community, then leave the final say to the admins.
  4. It's been a long since I took a German class, but doesn't this mean "my mother ate my homework"? How did that happen exactly?
  5. I can't say I'm not disappointed a bit because I'm still convinced it'd be best if we wrote the wiki as if writing real world articles but I'm not overly concerned with it either. Like I said, I'd rather have consistency.
  6. This is only a matter of perspective. Many fan wikis are written as if their fictional world was the real world, and many are written otherwise. There is no wrong thing to do here, only what we decide. Obviously, I am in favor of the former. Avatar Wiki, for example, writes their articles the way I'm suggesting. Here's their manual of style: http://avatar.wikia.com/wiki/Avatar_Wiki:Manual_of_Style#Tense And WoT Wiki is (for the most part, it's not as well edited as Avatar Wiki) written as you're suggesting. Dragon Age Wiki is written as you're suggesting: http://dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Dragon_Age_Wiki:Manual_of_Style#Tenses edit: da wiki is a better example
  7. Wikipedia uses present tense for fictional characters only. This might be a different topic entirely but I'm opposed to having Doylist articles on the wiki except for specific articles (books, real life people etc.) If we are going to use Wikipedia as a basis, I think we should look at the biographies. Dead: Charlemagne Alive: Obama As you can see, they are using the tenses as I'm suggesting. Accepting a point in a book is not the same thing as syncing a fictional timeline to ours. In fact, I'm not saying anything about our timeline. This is Roshar's timeline we're talking about. At the end of tWoK, Taln comes to Kholinar. Under what I'm suggesting, that would be the present of Roshar. Anything happening before that the past, and anything that will happen after the future. Simple. The article is written in past tense. All dead characters are written in past tense. Yep. Exactly. I said we should keep timelines by series in my initial post, but what I should have said was probably Shardworld. The present of Scadrial is at the end of The Alloy of Law, so yeah, the characters of the original trilogy, as well as the articles relating to the Final Empire, since it no longer exists, would be in past tense. If someone is entering a wiki, I think they should be accepting being spoilered. All articles are filled with spoilers. I don't know how we could even keep the wiki, if we had to concern ourselves with not spoiling people. I disagree. Roshar and Scadrial have their own histories. Vin joined Kelsier's thieving crew in 1019 FE(?) and Kaladin became a member of Bridge Four in 1173 EoS, regardless of what you or I do with our books. I agree with the bolded. The longer we wait, the harder it is going to be to establish a standard later on. Maybe we should have a decision before WoR comes out. I would rather have a standard I don't agree with than no standard.
  8. Heh. It just popped into my head. Motherly zombie.
  9. Marewill.
  10. Happy birthday Brandon!
  11. So, it's not Taln. I think Nalan was using a regular Shardblade, so it's probably not him. That leaves Jezrien, Kalak and Ishar. Most people assume Nalan's companion in WoR prologue is Kalak. I'm not sure if that's true myself, though I believe he is one of the Heralds. Whoever he is, the guy said this: Seems agitated about it. Maybe he decided to get it back.
  12. That's a bad advice, both because WH is a good book and because you can't expect to understand the rest of the series if you skip a book. If you intend to continue series, just pick up the next book and start reading. aCoS is pretty good and tPoD has arguably the best military campaign in the series. While the pace drops a bit after LoC, the only bad book in the series is Crossroads of Twilight.
  13. List of Steelhunters redirects me to the Vault too. I can access everything else just fine on the latest Firefox though.
  14. Feruchemy is a balance magic between Preservation and Ruin, though the "source" as you call it doesn't come from an external power but from the Feruchemist itself. I supposed it can now be said that it's Harmony's magic system, which is a nice little detail considering Sazed was a Feruchemist. See: Coppermind article
  15. 1. I really, really don't think what Ym did was Regrowth. It was most likely plain Growth, because the kid's foot was scabbed over(is this the correct word?). This implies to me what Ym did just sped up body's regular healing. When Lift and the Lady Knight from Starfalls do Regrowth, the wounds healed like they'd never existed. Also IIRC, Regrowth restored Dalinar's energy as well.
  16. İstanbul, Turkey. Born and lived 21 years here.
  17. It's Rosharan. Also there's Scadrian, Selish and Nalthian.
  18. There can be some wild inaccuracies in book covers. Writers generally don't have much control of them as I understand it. At least until they're famous, then things change a bit. Have you guys read The Dresden Files series? 16 book covers so far and all of them show the protagonist wearing a fedora, but the guy has never worn a hat. It has pretty much become a running gag. Jim Butcher wrote Harry say that he hated hats a couple of times in the books. Makes me cringe every time I see a Dresden cosplay with a hate, and it happens more times with than without.
  19. Brandon confirmed that they are pretty close here.
  20. I would say he was convinced rather than ordered. Generally speaking, you don't need to come up with justifications like the Ring apparently has, when you can just order someone to do what you want.
  21. Since we don't seem to have a final decision yet, I'd like to share my opinion as well, albeit a little late. I think we should use the present and past tenses together. Historical events (history of a nation, character biography etc.--any event, really) should be always written in the past tense. The rest should be present tense. A small example: In the case of dead characters, extinct species, fallen nations etc. the article should be written completely in the past tense. I realize we may have some trouble determining if a character is dead since we have multiple worlds in different times, so we should determine it on the last published book in a given series, not the cosmere as a whole. Raoden was alive at the end of Elantris, and his article should be in present tense, even though some 300 years has passed by The Way of Kings. I'm not entirely sure but I think this is the way Wikipedia does it by the way.
  22. I am tempted to claim that Regrowth works similar to Resealing and only heals the body in the Physical Realm, though I don't have any evidence to it. It's mostly a gut feeling that's based on the name of the ability. As for the Shardblade, WoK says it cuts the soul. That's Spiritual Realm. I don't know if there are any WoBs though.
  23. Welcome to 17th Shard. We have an awesome wiki that's usually good to look at when you're curious: http://coppermind.net
  24. Sorry. The "modern" trilogy will have the technology level of the 20th century. Probably no smartphones.
