He might also have silver in his body. If I were a kandra on that planet, I'd put silver deposits in my skin, the way that can happen when a human drinks too much colloidal silver.

I wonder if Lumar has high percentage of people with argyria.

Also we don’t really know what the spines are made of and how fast they sink or how durable they are.

I think a vast amount of knowledge was lost on Roshar at and around the Recreance. The loss of Urithiru as a travel/trade hub and the loss of its libraries just before, the destruction of the False Desolation, the Recreance itself and the loss of contact with intelligent spren, the deaths of most former Radiants and many other deaths in the bloody conflicts over Shardblades just afterward... I think this was effectively a collapse of civilization for at least most of Roshar. Likely not as bad as a full Desolation, but probably more complete than, say, the fall of the Roman Empire on Earth (because Roshar's all one continent and was all culturally connected by Urithiru and the Radiants -- there were no areas unaffected, the way China and Mesoamerica were untouched by the collapse of the Western Roman Empire.)

Would you say a Desolation is less, just as, or more devastating than the Bronze Age collapse?

Sel  is also kinda weird. We only see so much of the map and while Teod and Arelon have good contact with the various nations of the Fjordell Empire they seem to have barely any contact with the Rose Empire to the north and we know nothing of the south.

More likely miles because he wouldn't need the unsealed metalmind - One can compound a metalmind that one could tap if a fuerochemist. Since he's a compounder, it wouldn't even require an unkeyed metalmind, though finding Augers with the fuerochemical abilities they need, and can recruit them, then a H-F-A could get them farming those.

Compounding granted by hemalurgy is currently not viable

Also our planet has large amounts of readily available salt because it is dissolved in our oceans.  Lumar does not have a saltwater ocean, so salt is likely not as easily obtainable.

Hence why the miners weren’t allowed to leave Diggen’s Point. Too rare and valuable to not have a guaranteed workforce.

Does it have to be an Allomantic ability?  What if Feruchemy is actually granted via feruchemy.  Allomancy is granted via Allomancy….

    Just a thought.

I do think that Alloying Harmonium could make it safer.  Maybe.  I can’t imagine any one alloy being more likely to grant Feruchemy than another.  Alloys might grant single metal Feruchemy I suppose, just like you can alloy Lerasium to make a misting instead of having it pure to make a Mistborn.

How would you gain Feruchemy feruchemically though? What would you be storing in order to tap later that grants the ability? It does bring up the question if any Scadrian can burn Lerasium and Atium without originally being an Allomancer can any Scadrian tap and store via a Harmonium metalmind without being a Feruchemist? I think there is a theory that since becoming a Mistborn is just a side effect of A-Lerasium that its actual effect is forging a greater Connection with the Shard. So it might be a Lerasium-Harmonium alloy is what would grant Feruchemy as a side effect.

  6. Well some people believe that if you could safely burn Harmonium it would make you a full feruchemist so by that logic an alloy would make you the related ferring but I’m not sold on that actually being Harmonium’s Allomantic ability.

  7. Possible reason that Renarin’s “lightweaving” made Moash’s pain come back is that his powers caused Odium to not be able to perceive Moash but I’m not sure just that would interrupt the connection Odium uses to siphon the pain. I assume it was just a subconscious thing where seeing the illusion part of Moash recognizes he deserves to feel pain but the conscious part of him still rejects it so it caused a hiccup in the connection.

We have no WoB about storing kinetic/static investiture, I think. How would you store investiture that is being used? Static is more plausible, but I think abilities and innate are all nicrosil can store.

I would assume that you burn a metal allomantically which acts as the key to the spiritual realm but if you store in F-Nicrosil at the same time instead of an Allomantic effect happening the amount of Investiture that would power that effect instead gets stored.

I was wondering this too, but also why salt is never really mentioned again after we leave the rock? You'd think there'd be some uses for it, assuming it's more plentiful/cheaper than silver as it is on our world

Probably because its not as durable as silver so it most likely has more niche applications

Pewter: pewter stores physical muscle mass. Unfortunately, this means it is unable to even reverse compound with A-pewter, which doesn’t affect muscle mass at all. A useful feruchemantic metal, but not for our sake.

There is a WOB about using A-Pewter to fill F-Pewter. Brandon says it’s possible just that it’s easier to do regular compounding.

Nicrosil: Nicrosil stores investiture, specifically innate investiture, which is your ability to use a certain ability. While it is fundamental for the process of making unsealed metalminds, it does not have any reverse compounding uses.

Do we know that it is only innate Investiture? F-Tin you can decide which sense to store. Can you decide between kinetic and passive Investiture for F-Nicrosil?

Duralumin: Duralumin stores connection, which can be very useful for a worldhopper, it does nothing here.

Since you added Atium don’t forget that A-Lerasium forges Connection (or at least theorized so) which could possibly then be stored by F-Duralumin

Iron: Iron stores weight, but doesn’t do much else. As we have seen in the books, it has been quite versatile, but it doesn’t do much reverse-compounding wise.

Here is a weird one because you are focusing on storing usually a secondary A-metal attribute into an F-metal but what about a secondary F-metal attribute into a different F-metal (obviously not something a regular Twinborn can do but someone spike might) and so the added weight from F-Pewter could be used to fill F-Iron.

Sorry mate it was a nice theory, but Brandon has confirmed that Virtuosity is a shard:

    With that said, I don't think we actually know all 16 Shards for sure;
We know Ruin & Preservation (Harmony), Dominion, Devotion, Honor, Cultivation, Odium, Autonomy, Endowment, Mercy, Valor, Ambition, Invention, Whimsy, and Virtuosity. That is only 15 (or 14 with a Double shard). There is some decent circumstantial evidence that the last Shard is Wisdom/Prudence/something to this effect but I don't think we have specific confirmation at this time.

OP isnt saying that Virtuosity isnt a Shard just that they don’t think mentioning it is a spoiler. They think that counting Virtuosity there is one as of yet unrevealed Shard (true) and they think that that Shard otherwise called Wisdom/Prudence is in fact “Practicality” (theory).

I would very much like the to hear the context of that statement!  There's a strong theory that she's recently decended from a Cognitive Shadow that is very Similar to a Returned, but vert much not.

But frankly I'd just love to learn more about the older, hidden cross-ties from generations of worldhopping.

This was said in a thread on cremposting so it could just be a straight up lie but if not it’s definitely interesting. It could explain what attracted Shallan’s mother (I know the other theory you are talking about) to Lin Davar in the first place.

In order to have a Breath, do you have to be native to Nalthis?

    Brandon Sanderson

Not to be given Breaths, but people who are not native to Nalthis are not born with that Investiture.

    JoyBlu

So, you have to be born on that planet?

    Brandon Sanderson

There are exceptions. Most of the time.

    JoyBlu

If both your parents were Nalthians, and they moved off planet, and they had a child that was born on a different planet—

    Brandon Sanderson

It is possible for that child to have a Breath, but it would not continue too long. But yes, that child would probably have a Breath, depending...

If both of his parents had Breaths.

    Mmmhmm.

It could happen, the baby would have a bit of Preservation and a bit of Endowment.

    Yes, that is possible.

So someone who was born without a Breath and came to Nalthis could possibly be Returned?

    Brandon Sanderson

Possibly could be Returned. Yes. That's not very likely.

So they could get a Divine Breath, even though never...

They could be given a Divine Breath, yes.

Cool thanks for the info. I’ve heard an interesting theory that Shallan has relatively recent Nalthian ancestry that was supposedly confirmed by Brandon off mic.

I think SH3! SH2 shoud be about Kel's body and creating Bands! :P

I think Brandon has implied that if he does a SH2 it might focus on Hoid and stuff like his activities in Era 1 (and hopefully up til him saving Wax on that boat). Maybe it can be a multi parter. Part 1 Hoid era 1 Part 2 Kel early era 2 Part 3 Hoid late era 2 Part 4 Kel late era 2.

    Solelight sounds great. Good pun.

Problem with Mistlight/Ashlight is that Ruin's gaseous investiture also manifests as the Mist, so calling only Preservation's one as a Mistlight is misleading.

All light names that we know are associated either with a source (storm/tower), the Rhythm (war) or the Shard's Intent/way of influencing (life/void). By using this, Bloodlight would be a great name for Ruin's as it's how Hemalurgy works. Breaths could be called Soullight, because its source is a soul, but also something like Giftlight could be used, as it's close to Shard's intent. Mistlight for Harmony would be fitting, as he combines both Ruin's and Preservation's Mists, and Mists are the source of this "light". No idea for Preservation. And I think those are all Shard's gaseous investiture that we have seen.

I specifically chose Hazelight to contrast Mistlight in the way Hazekillers are meant to oppose Mistings/Mistborns. If we wanna specifically use a term more related to the Investiture though I could see Deeplight as the Deepness was caused by Ruin adding his Investiture to the Mists. Rust I felt does reflect Ruin’s Intent given that it symbolizes entropy.

I used Colorlight for Breaths on similar justifications that you used Bloodlight for Ruin given how color is important to Awakening but since it’s Rhythm is most likely the Iridescent Tones but Iridescentlight is a bit much. Soullight and Solelight would be problematic phonetically (although only in English which of course is not a language in the cosmere), but I also feel conceptually it might be too similar to Lifelight. I do like Giftlight though.

Harmony is one of the hardest due to its dual nature. While I think Preservation’s Investiture would be classified as Mistlight by Rosharans after the fact given that it no longer exists as such I could see them carrying that term over for Harmony as. The problem with this though is that even though the Investiture is expressed in similar ways the Rhythms would obviously be different. Preservation’s Rhythm is basically only described as pulses when Vin is searching for it so maybe Pulselight but I kinda want both Ruin’s and Preservation’s to be thematically tied. The only way to get Harmony on theme as well would be to go with Foglight which while funny is a bit too silly.

And yeah I think that’s all the explicit gaseous Investiture we’ve seen in released works. I do assume the solar radiation is the gaseous Investiture on Taldain but it hasn’t been explicitly stated as such. Additionally not a gaseous Investiture but we do get the unnamed Rhythm combining Oduim and Cultivation.

I was thinking of this as Ashlight personally.

    Lordlight and Solelight sound awesome.

Maybe Ambition's Light would be called something like Shadelight or Shadowlight?

Ashlight is good. Rustlight is another possibility.

Shadelight is really good given the limited information we have about the Threnody system.

  17. If someone from Roshar became a worldhopper and was renaming the gaseous Investiture of other Shards as ______light in the typical Rosharan way what would the others be?

    • Honor = Stormlight
    • Cultivation = Lifelight
    • Odium = Voidlight
    • Preservation = Mistlight?
    • Ruin = Hazelight?
    • Devotion = Lovelight?
    • Dominion = Lordlight?
    • Endowment = Colorlight?
    • Autonomy = Solelight? (this is a pun as auto=sole=sol=sun)
    • Ambition = ???
    • Mercy = ???
    • Valor = ???
    • Whimsy = ???
    • Invention = ???
    • SP3 = ???
    • Wisdom/Prudence = ???

We also have some names for combined Light

    • Honor/Odium = Warlight
    • Honor/Cultivation = Towerlight
    • Cultivation/Odium = Ancestorlight?
    • Harmony = Metallight?
    • Dor = ???

I saw there was some discussion on the Cultivation/Odium mix but was wondering if there are any other ideas floating around out there?
