  1. I have to wonder whether there were highstorms originally. There are several mentions of ancient animals that feel too Earth-like - which suggests that at some point the people of Roshar knew of those animals. So they either existed on Roshar long ago (which would imply that the highstorms haven't always been around, otherwise those animals would've be able to evolve), or the denizens of the planet were originally from another Shardworld - where those animals existed, and were brought to Roshar in the collective memory of the people. Either scenario is fascinating.
  2. Kaladin wouldn't know that. To him the fact that he and Szeth seem to share the same abilities would translate to "Szeth has the same abilities." He has no reason to believe the Assassin in White would be limited in the ways we know he is - and even if he suspects that they are different (because Syl tells him that no honorspren would bond with Szeth), he couldn't even begin to guess where those differences would manifest. For all he knows, Szeth might be more powerful because he doesn't have a spren to act as his moral compass. That aside, Kaladin hasn't had much change to use that particular ability of his. Most of his fight against Szeth was spent in the air. Furthermore, when Kaladin was practicing fighting against Sigzil, Rock, and Lopen, he pointed out that his abilities with Stormlight don't come as naturally to him as the spear does, he doesn't use them as instinctively, so he would need to practice. Well, he did practice the Basich Lashing to the point where he became confident with it, but he never really played with Reverse or Full. So when his powers were restored after speaking the Third Ideal, even though Lashing felt much more instinctive to him, Basic Lashing was what he had practiced the most, and so he stuck to that. Fighting a deadly assassin is really not the time to learn new skills...
  3. I am not sure that's what Brandon said back then. The way I remember it, he said that each Order is represented by two small circles and one big one, but that's just how it looks on the TWoK endpages.
  4. I doubt they are of Adonalsium - it looks much more plausible that they have evolved naturally. Plus, we know that Adonalsium existed on Yolen - or at least was Shattered on Yolen - and its Shards took the idea of humans from there; so the one race that could have been created by Adonalsium looks like us, not like the Parshendi.
  5. Far too many things we don't know about the events that led to the rise and fall of the Silver Kingdoms... Speculating about them might be a fruitless effort =\
  6. You could be on the right track here.
  7. I am really starting to like this Ishar guy. Sharp kid. I hope he hasn't fallen too far and can be found and persuaded to aid humanity. And on a different note, I am now curious to see how the Heralds, or the most powerful of the Radiants, compare to other characters from the cosmere in terms of raw power. Could a few people, even if they are Radiants or Heralds, have stood against Odium and done something to force him to react?
  8. Neither Taln nor Nalan seem to show any visible signs of torture though, and Taln at least was really tortured.
  9. If I recall correctly Gavilar was also pretty aggressive in courting Navani, giving Dalinar a run for his money - and winning her in the end (though that was partially Dalinar's fault). This doesn't strike me as the actions of a homosexual man who puts a front for people to see, it seems far too (pro)active.
  10. Awakening turns an object grey, not white. Even Suse can't use grey for Awakening.
  11. What I liked the most about this is that the chapter title refers to "the one who killed my promises." Also, the more I think about this Death Rattle, the more I am impressed by how accurately it fits. On the topic of Words of Radiance epigraphs maybe foreshadowing events from book #3, I'll have to disagree. The reason the ones from The Way of Kings predict what's going to happen in the future is because the Death Rattles are caused by Nergaoul, the Unmade whose gift for seeing into the future is best developed. WoR epigraphs - and the book itself, for that matter - don't feature any Death Rattles.
  12. Huh. Assuming that both question and answer implicitly refer to the Royal Locks, then... I don't even know how to process this right now. The Royal Locks are part of Vo's heritage to the royal line. So we have a Splinter of Endowment (Vo), siring children, who in turn probably inherit some of their father's sDNA, which has been modified by Endowment's Investiture. So Vo's children, the first royals and first owners of the Royal Locks, have sDNA slightly different from that of the rest of the people on Nalthis. By the time we get to Siri and Vivenna the modifications are probably pretty diluted, but still present. So...does this imply that each race's ancestry can be traced back to different Splinters of Honor and / or Cultivation? Were the Heralds the first people on Roshar, the equivalent to Adam and Eve, each Herald becoming the father or mother of one or two of the races? The theory is getting pretty out there by now, but it's mostly logical in my head...
  13. A quick primer in Rosharan calendar: 1 day = ~20 (Earth) hours 1 week = 5 days 1 month = 10 weeks 1 year = 10 months So 1 Rosharan year is 500 Rosharan days, each one of which is about 20 Earth hours long. This makes one Rosharan year approximately 10,000 Earth hours long, or about 1.15 Earth years. So when Brandon says that Renarin is in his twentieth year (which makes him 19, by the way), this translates to about 21 (and some months) on Earth.
  14. Oooh, that's interesting! I wonder how Odium did it - would he need a medium like Ruin, or can he be more direct?
  15. So we don't know what type of spren they are, but we are pretty sure they are Nahel. Good info on the Seons too, it helps me understand how the spren work.
  16. We are in the Words of Radiance subforum, there is no reason to be coy with spoiler tags. But those glyphs, I imagined them much bigger than what we see on this cover. Also shaped like, you know, things. Sword, wings, things like that. Not blobs.
  17. That's... not at all supported. Anywhere.
  18. Oooh, good question!
  19. Sounds pretty reasonable. We might need to wait for book #3 to see what it is exactly that the Bondsmiths can do, but their access to the surges of tension might have helped here.
  20. Do make a separate thread when you do, we are already derailing this one.
  21. Nice catch on those chapter titles there! Have you looked through all of the Death Rattles & chapter titles to see if there are more of them?
  22. Maybe, but I find it highly unlikely. It's right next door to impossible.
  23. I'll... have to think about this. My gut feeling is that it's more complex than is necessary, but there are some points that make sense, and I'll need to revisit them.
  24. We haven't seen any of the cognitive shadows (we know of) be able to possess bodies, so I'll pass on this one for now.
  25. This won't be answered. It's not only far too specific, it also leaves Brandon with too much wiggle room (replying with "anything is possible" is one of his favorite tricks).
