Yes, but it's less user friendly. It's a simple app, so it doesn't really matter, but generally it's better to capture the user input in a form the user is familiar with (e.g. "paper") than to hand them a longer prompt (e.g. "Enter 1 for [rock], 2 for [paper], or 3 for [scissors]: ") and save yourself a few lines of code and your computer a few cycles. Otherwise we'd all be inputting things in binary Let's not nitpick the paste though

Brent Weeks, The Lightbringer Series
Argent replied to Catalyst21's topic in Entertainment Discussion
No, I agree. Kip's climax was definitely too long. The others were more in line though. -
A little known fact - the original Doctor Who, Series 8 Episode 3 was called Deus ex Machina: Deusing the frack out of your ex Machina Because that's how it felt watching that episode. Grumpy Doctor is a good Doctor, but comedic incompetence doesn't become anyone on the cast.

I don't know if I replied with my thoughts (think I lost my comment due to browser voodoo) about The Broken Eye, but without going into specifics, I have to say that it was... I think the only book not written by Brandon (and even he has done this to me only a handful of times) that got my hands shaking during the climactic scenes. Not all of them (e.g. the climax and resolution of Karris' arc were nowhere near as emotional to me as Gavin's and Kip's), but enough. -
Yeah, 2015 is not happening. First quarter of 2016 would be possible, but not overwhelmingly likely. As for the Shardplate and the Heralds' alleged toughness, we don't know they are tougher, or more durable, or anything else in general. The-artist-formerly-known-as-Taln seems supernaturally fast, but that's the only thing we've seen - we don't know whether all Heralds get speed, or whether they all get physical bonuses, or even whether Taln is a Herald or not! Also, Radiant "levels" come in Ideals, not bonds. Bonds have a very specific meaning in this context.

We know from Eshonai's interludes that the parshmen are what the listeners think of as "slaveform" or "no form at all." So, same species. That parshman from Bridge Four whose name eludes me right now was able to bind to a spren and assume warform, so he should be able to do another - such as stormspren / stormform. There are several obvious differences between Shardplate and Shardblade - the most glaring of which is that Syl doesn't find Plate repulsive. So, something is noticeably different about it, but we don't know what. Maybe, maybe not. This goes back to "we don't really know anything substantial about Plate" Aaand once again we don't know. We have only seen Syl's and the Stormfather's reactions, but considering that "dead" Shardblades scream when touched by a Radiant in training, I am going to say that all spren can hear it, and thus be hurt by it.

Rake is, hands down, the winner of hearts. Not the sole, but the biggest one. You even get to see him fight against equals once or twice. Time skips... yes and no. The books jump through time all the time. I can't think of a big skip though.

Developing a sci-fi magic system - please help!
Argent replied to Bunnyburn's topic in Creator's Corner
The very first thing I need to ask - why is physical matter not psyv? This is the scientist in me talking. Energy and matter are interchangeable, one can be converted into the other (the whole E=mc2), so if the universal forces are psyv, why not everything? Moreover, sound for example is not a force, it's a purely physical phenomenon (vibrating molecules, essentially). I think you've got some more science to research before you are ready to polish the details. I am sure I and others here (and the Internet, naturally) can help you though. -
Warbreaker, Mistborn, a lil' bit of WOR [SPOILERS]

Okay, two episodes with Capaldi, and I already like him much better than Smith. I still think there is a mismatch between the show's target audience and me (or between my tastes and the show's direction), but I am more than okay watching it. The Doctor's problems and self-doubt feel more... personal to his life. Eccleston and Tennant fought against the memories of the Time War, Smith was just a goofball, but Capaldi is doubting whether he is good in his core, not whether his actions are good sometimes. "You are a good dalek" was a really good way to describe him.

The Broken Eye is done. Very happy with it, but Weeks looks like one of those authors who thoroughly torture their characters. Which, yeah, it creates drama and tension, but I wish more good things happened to them...

It's amazing how many things you consider important in this book, and they are either not, or they weren't memorable enough to me, so I have no idea what you are talking about

Request: Mistborn icon pack for Android devices.
Argent replied to Cstryon's topic in Creator's Corner
I should be able to put together an app together, if I had the actual icons. My schedule is busier than it has ever been, so I probably shouldn't be your first choice. -
I finished The Human Division a few days ago and started on The Broken Eye. I a little over halfway through, and really happy that there are authors out there I enjoy almost as much as Brandon.
-
The reason I avoid considering the idea of an actual textbook, be it on paper or digital, is because our knowledge is really incomplete at this stage. I mean, none of Brandon's series are even finished!

Brent Weeks, The Lightbringer Series
Argent replied to Catalyst21's topic in Entertainment Discussion
I would encourage everyone here to either use the spoiler tags for a couple of weeks, or mark their posts as containing spoilers from The Broken Eye (if that's the case, obviously). -
You can (theoretically) find me at Argent#1824, though I don't play much these days - something I plan the fix around November 13. I might show up in D3 on occasion now that Patch 2.1 is out, but I mostly stick to the Heroes of the Storm alpha - which is not yet connected to the rest of the Battle.net, so you can't find me there anyway.
-
The bulk of the effort would be in the beginning, with surges whenever there is a major new release, as that's when we tend to get people asking questions during signings. Outside of that, with no new lore, the thing would be just sitting there.

I think you are making more of this project than we - or at least I - are. I fully intend a good portion of it to be essentially a glorified list of WoBs. Let's run with the textbook metaphor (it is a metaphor, isn't it?) for a moment. If the first chapter is about the Cosmere - and I think it should be - then I imagine something like a paragraph or two explaining the Cosmere itself (briefly mentioning Shards, Shardworlds, and Realmatics). Then another paragraph or two about each one of the parenthesized entries, all linked and cited when necessary. And then some indeterminate amount of WoBs that are relevant to at least one of the chapter topics, but couldn't fit in the narrative well enough. Then we explore each Shardworld, because I think that makes sense to most, if not all, readers. Words of Brandon would, of course, accompany the appropriate sections (e.g. we would include all the relevant details about how the different Metallic Arts work after the section on Scadrial). Cross-world references (e.g. the identities of the three worldhoppers from Ishikk's (?) interlude) could be included either in the section of their "viewpoint" world (so, Roshar in this case), marked appropriately, or in a separate section after all the Shardworlds' ones. Then, once all that's done, we can cover the Cosmere again, if necessary, but now in greater depth, because the reader is caught up on all the specific worlds' details. We can also have links to the best supported theories here and there, but I would probably limit their number for various reasons. So no, the way I imagine it, it's nowhere near impossible. Difficult, sure, but absolutely doable by a few people who have nothing better to do
-
I don't think a Wiki is a good way to learn about such a large number of concepts - the key to the Cosmere is understanding how things fit together. You need to know about the individual parts too, obviously, but the beauty is in the puzzle as a whole, and a Wiki can't show you the puzzle. A single (Google) document will work better, but it will be impractically long. A think something more akin to a textbook might work better - a collection of articles/documents, planned beforehand, and cross-referenced, with a vocabulary... Something like that might work.
