    as someone who lives in seattle the seattle police department is super problematic

    which… idk if that was addressed enough here

    although the two people we saw who actually worked for spd were complete crem in human form

    BUT ANYWAY as someone who is currently big time struggling with self esteem this was a good read

    i don’t really see why the margin illustrations had to be there

    they were cute i guess

    just kind of distracting from the actual story

    i haven’t read anyone else’s reviews so idk if that’s an unpopular opinion or not

    it’d be interesting to see what brando will do if he writes a sequel

    like there were some big unanswered questions

    probly won’t have john/ruinan as the focus tho

    feels like his arc is over

    Random thought: what if the crimson aether is related to the sinew essence? I have no evidence for this other than a) flesh sea = ew, b) red spikes as an element doesn’t really make sense and c) I don’t think they’re related to blood because the extension of that essence — all non-oil liquids — doesn’t make sense w/ red spikes.

    The big difference between aether spores and white sand is that spores release Investiture (which can then turn into matter or energy of a certain essence/primal element, depending on the aether) on touching water, but with sand you have to have the Luhel bond to release the Investiture. This might have something to do with primal aethers vs. ”true” aethers — Ulaam says in ch. 28 that “though the true aethers on other worlds have a symbiosis with people, the ones on your moons have become insatiable, aggressive, and fecund.” Edit: to release large amounts of investiture

    The impression I got from the “spaceships” line was First of the Sun. It feels like the only place where “spaceships landing on your planet” would be brought up in that way.

    Thoughts: - This book TotES has the best acronym ever. - When Midnight Essence got namedropped, I literally gasped. Like, what? How? Why? When? Where? - I kinda felt like I was reading an Alcatraz book (minus the considerable amount of blood), not a cosmere one. There were a couple of things that stretched my suspension of disbelief just a little bit too much (e.g. farting pancake aliens, the entire thing about Dougs, etc.) - That said, I absolutely love Hoid as a narrator. (I also love Alcatraz as a narrator, so that’s not surprising.) I don’t mind whimsy: as you can probably tell from my profile pic, I’m a big fan of Lift - Tress definitely grew on me as a character, though I feel her romance with Charlie was one-dimensional and more of an excuse for plot to happen than anything else. I’ll have to reread so I can recontextualize her interactions with “Huck”. - Ideas for other moons/aethers/spores/seas: Vermillion/Scarlet, Violet, Maroon, Saffron (probably a Rose Sea court), Goldenrod? - Probably a few good cosmemes coming out of this

    I still feel like it would put a whole lot of pressure on the IC. And it would be tricky to have new people / habitual inactives in the IC, and filtering out them leads to meta solving and that leads to madness. I think they might have more incentive to use a kill than an extra vote.
